Repairing PS3 game disc

Archive: 30 posts

Edit: Problem solved, I just installed the Version 2.00 patch and it seems to have fixed it (I thought it only added PlayStation Move support). It was apparently fixed in 1.01./1.02 (I googled about it) but those seem to have been removed in favour of including both of them in 2.00. Too bad not playing it for a couple of days didn't make the ending as emotional as it should've been...

Ok, I was just about to finish Heavy Rain for the first time when during a cutscene (or at least a non-interactive section) when the sound simply vanished and a few moments later, the game froze and the XMB wouldn't appear. I reset the game, and whenever the loading screen finishes, the game screen never appears and I can't bring up the XMB. When I try replaying it via the chapters menu, the same thing happens. When I try replaying it via selecting the previous chapter, then the former happens. It's froze before like this, but it only happened once then. I bought it pre-owned and I've noticed a white smudge on the disc. Does anyone know how I could repair it or clean it?

Have you tested other games since this started to see if they have problems.

Try returning the game to the place you bought it from if it is defective you should beable to get a refund or exchange it for another copy.

Well, there were a few freezes on Heavy Rain but they didn't keep happening continuosly. My brother has been playing Assassin's Creed Brotherhood on the same PS3 and it's working fine for him.

Yeah, I'm looking for the reciept. This is actually my second copy of the game (my first one was preowned and didn't work at all) so this doesn't reflect well on GAME.

The disc is translucent, do you mean it goes through the disc as if nothing is there or that, well, the disc is tranlucent?

if light shines through one or more small holes

The disc SHOULD be translucent. That is normal. As long as there are no holes.

Yes, not to sound gross, but this is how I clean my discs. Spit on it, and rub it around with my finger, and wipe it off with a cotton shirt. Make sure it's cotton, ar a soft material that absorbs liquid. )

For smudges just take a cloth like the one you use for cleaning glasses and gently wipe it off if possible. If there's a lot of residue I'd focus on removing that first without wiping it all over the rest of the disc.

When I worked at a jewellers we used to use the polishing machines to buff out any scratches or defects in our CDs and DVDs. As long as the defect is only present in the plastic layer protecting the metallic film you can get rid of it, so you don't have to take it back to the shop if you don't want.

Bah, you call that disgusting? Anyway, I'll be sure to try out all of your suggestions.

Wiping the disc with a glasses wipe didn't seem to work... even though I'm not convinced saliva on the disc won't damage it.2011-08-24 20:33:00

I've tried this strategy with many a game and... they're now Zombies... Seriously... In the sense that they've now been rescued from the brink of death and now work again. W00T! 2011-08-24 23:38:00

I've found that a drop of soap on the disc works better than salvia. Just put a drop of soap on, turn your faucet to cold and clean the disc using your index finger. Then pat dry it with something that won't leave a residue.

I'm not about heavy rain, but many games now install everything to the HDD which limits seeks on the disc. It may just be freezing because of numerous faults in the system (overheating, corrupt data, etc).

Then the only purposes of accessing the disc should be for DRM purposes if I'm not mistaken (and I probably am).2011-08-25 05:56:00

I'm pretty sure I do need the disc, as it isn't under "Game" on the XMB when the disc isn't inserted (even though maybe I need to see if I can run it from the save file on the HDD...).2011-08-25 13:35:00

You mistook what I said. Of course you'll need the disc, how else would you start the game? That's is pretty much all you'll need it for with some games.2011-08-25 14:38:00

Mgs 4, Resident Evil 5, Infamous 2 and BOTH LBP games all have system installs. That means it installs the contents of the disc to the HDD so load times can be quicker, but it still needs the disc for boot up.2011-08-25 19:26:00

It doesn't install all the game data though, the size of the install is alot smaller than the size of the game, Infamous 2 for example has a 2.5gb install but the game is 15gb.2011-08-25 19:45:00

Many games do install all of the data though. GT5 is one example.2011-08-25 19:46:00
