Short vid tutorial on assembly tank tread and getting it around your wheelbase.

I also have a conveyer belt I threw together. Not fancy but works. Check it out .. level name is rz22g conveyer test

I have a two part Tank Tread Tutorial Video uploading right now. I will post the link to them in the post as soon as they are completed. In a few days I will post a complete tank build video, at least building up to a basic operating tank without bells and whistles.

Awesome. Your Mighty Mite Tank (did I spell that right?) is sweet as hell. I gave it a go in your level after seeing the level on a link from Kotaku I believe... Great work. Something that's got me stumped is how to make a track work right. I'll admit I didn't try for long as it wasn't urgent for the level I was building, but I'd love to see what you've done so I can have a better direction at figuring it out. Thanks for posting this stuff, I'm sure it'll be very helpful to many

Thanks. Its a two part video. I have them both uploaded but the first part was to long and rejected by youtube so I am editing and processing it again. It will be up in whole tonight.

Nice, so I saw your BUG video too, that's a shame there are quite a few bugs surfacing since the update. The one you found, the stickers disappearing from a costume after an explosion, (the one I found ->) stickers no longer show on prize and score bubbles... and I know there are more... hopefully they are listening and getting to work pronto on these glitches

I was able to fit the tank tutorial into one video this morning. Its uploading right now so should be ready for viewing within the hour I guess. Not sure how long youtube takes to process it. If I missed anything important it will be noted in the description or I will add annotations to the vid itself. Link will be posted here shortly.2008-12-21 15:30:00

really fantastic. i tried doing a conveyor belt in this manner to create a juke box so that the user could select their own choice of music for the level, but it never worked right. i may have to go back and try again with your design. or perhaps, have you shared treds in your level? i need to go check out your stuff

I can send you the tread design that is on my tank now. Go to my tank break down level and you can see them scaled down on the Mini Mite vehicle. They should work well as a conveyer that size or scaled up slightly. You could use the current length and just put multiple units end to end.2008-12-21 19:31:00

Have you considered using grid mode when trying this? Not everyone has such steady hands and it might make the initial building of the track smoother.

Grid mode can be turned on and off at any time while pressing start, which includes mid pause or while something is popit held in place (or not). You would not want it on when doing precise adjustments like setting up the final link or changing the tension on the tread, as it would just move by one grid size, which is not ideal.

So if you used small grid, had a circle shape one grid size large, elongated it to 3 grid, copied, moved to the back plane, and had the circles lined up overlapping while in grid, it might be an even more exact chain. Just a suggestion.

Front plane view can help make precise adjustments as well so your eye is not fooled by the 3-D view.

But overall, that was a great and clear video, well explained and demonstrated, with some of the finer points well pointed out.

I did find it funny when you walked up and pointed at the screen itself. "Wow! It's Kratos4 in the flesh!"

Very good job. I don't really build objects and vehicles, but I found this to be very cool. I might give it a go someday.2008-12-22 05:10:00

Hmm, very interesting video! I would not have thought to bolt the pieces of the track like that. However, as facinating as this is, it is less helpfull than I had hoped... What I need to figure out is how to make a conveyor belt that has zero slack I'm going to give this a try after I finish with my christmas level (everything seems to be on hold because of it!) and who knows, maybe if I tighten it enough, it'll work like I need it to! Seriously though, great vid, very detailed and easy to understand because of it!2008-12-22 05:58:00

Thanks all. Elbee23 for some reason I dont like the grid. I think mainly because when Im just moving stuff around its annoying. Now if they would add a toggle so you press a button and it toggles that on and off, that would be different. I will have to go back and try but I think on the part where you are staggering the sections, grid will not work, because grid will either line it up right in the middle, then the next section touches or merges with it, or it makes a really large gap. You actually have to line it up in the middle then shift it over just slightly, otherwise the ends of the next section touches that one. I do use grid on stuff like steps where materials merging is not an issue.

Kapbam.. I have the current tread on my tank scaled down on a smaller version. I just threw together a quicky to show you an option. You could do something like this and join each unit right at the ends of the yellow and checkered material to make it look like one large unit.

Look for level.... rz22g conveyer test

Thanks a ton for doing this. It was a huge help. I've tried to get treads to work for ages, but have never quite gotten it right. I've spent hours doing it. Funny thing, there wasn't a whole lot I did differently... but there were certainly some key points that I missed. (ie dropping the second primary wheel and letting it settle instead wrapping the tread around manually. That made a lot of sense).
There was one thing I did differently that I found made a huge difference. I got my tread to the desired length, and then in order to connect the master link, instead of fussing with the support wheels, I just put my two support wheels in place, and used a dark matter pin in all 3 of the wheels. I then took my treads and pulled them together via rope. I grabbed a spare link that I had specifically left aside for this, and then placed it infront of the tightened rope. Deleted the rope, and bolted it together. Like this:

It worked very very easily for me, and I had no problems. Just something to take into consideration. Either way, thanks a ton. I managed to make a treaded vehicle (albeit extremely rudimentary) in about 15 minutes from the ground up. It was great! Thanks!

^ I've built a few conveyors myself, and this is pretty much exactly how I've done it. Rope is an invaluable tool for manipulating anything built from links, from conveyors to rope bridges, to treads, etc.

The one hiccup I encountered with belt conveyors is the fact that the belts can easily stretch due to inherent weakness in small-sized objects. So, too many links in your belt will probably mean it will stretch under its own weight.

Not too mention these things can eat up a LOT of thermo. If I ever bother to rebuild one, I'll be sure not to use so many vertices in my link shapes and connectors.

No question, there. It's too bad, really... they're pretty fun to make when they work
