Word up to your mother. I have recently started on a big project that I would like some feedback for. The idea here is to compile the best of Lovecraft's short stories into a series of short levels and cinematics all controlled from one central hub. Like a LBP miniseries.

The shorts I plan on turning into levels

1-Dagon (in progress)
2-the Picture in the House
3-Arthur Jermyn (2 parts)
4- Nyarlathotep
5- Reanimator (3 Parts)
6- Shadow Over Innsmouth (2 Parts)
7- Call of Cthulhu (3 Parts)

That is the rough rundown of how the chapters will come out.
Now I have an idea of how this is gonna come out, but I need a few people to help me out. If you are a fan of Lovecraft, of horror, or just a fan of unique level projects, I would love to have your help!

The positions I would like help on are-

New England Architect- (Closed temp.)
Costume Design- Open
Sound Design- Closed- (Nunsmasher, Omegaslayer, Cladohwizard)

Here are some screenshots from "Dagon"

The main character of Dagon is an unnamed sailor who has escaped captivity of German Naval officers during WWI. We meet up with him adrift in the middle of the pacific on his lifeboat.

I would love to do sound design or gameplay co-designer, as my two specialties are logic and music/sound effects. I don't do voice acting though.

I may have never published a level, but I do believe I could be of assistance

Sweet. By sound design, I mainly need someone who can do music well enough to emulate the work of Akira Yamaoka. I want music in that style.

For game play design, I am planning keeping it to light platform, as these stories aren't particularly actionful, but include elements of exploration of jungle ruins, oceanic ruins, and ruins in general. I just need some game play to spice it up without making it out of the realm of realism. These stories are haunting, slow horror. In other words, we gotta keep it simple.

Few questions:

Firstly, how long will this project take, not in the negative sense, but the reason I ask is because I will soon be spending some money on an idea that I've already sunk about 75 bucks into. I don't want to release details because I don't want to get any attention until I know it works, message me for details if you'd like.

Secondly, Im not very great with design, anything in the goodies bag is something I am not fantastic with. If youd like help with sackbot logistics, and any other logic, I can definitely help with that, but as far as gameplay design goes, Im not your guy.

Anyways, Ill look up some of Akira Yamaoka's work tonight, maybe get started

Sounds like a plan, Stan. I NEED music. The game play design is something I can manage myself, but I would like another perspective. So If you can help with the music, It would be great. As for a timeline, I am planning on dragging this out over a long period of time and releasing one chapter at a time. Like a web mini series. But of LBP episodes. So Dagon, I plan on having done by the middle or end of September. Meanwhile working on bits and pieces of all the entries. Then when it comes down to time to actually churn them out, they will already have a lot of work done on them. So there is not much of a rush.2011-08-23 08:21:00

If you need some pure growl death metal like voice over done without filters, gimme a call.
I like the idea of this project but I really haven't the time to help with more than voice over

If you have read the story "Dagon" tell me what you think of this (contains spoilers)

I finished my rough design for the creature, Dagon I think it is scary enough to make a SPOILER US Naval officer kill himself

Here is the rough draft of my design SPOILER http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=36257

So what do yall think? Omega, this is one of the characters you would be doing the voice for

I think I've gotten pretty good at costume designing and I've helped a few friends before in the past on it for their prokects but I do need to repurchase some DLC first, (lost it all sadly) once I get a PSN Card, which should help greatly. If you are okay with me joining the team, just send me some pictures of the characters that'll need to be transformed in sackbot form and I'll do my best.2011-08-25 12:39:00

Sorry for not being full force with that music, but after seeing your Dagon, I am aware of how awesome this will be, never played a decent scary level before. I'm not sure if you are good with logic or not, so no offence if you are, but if you need ANY logic help whatsoever, I can do it2011-08-25 13:45:00

I am fairly proficient in logic I can handle that aspect alone. But I do need a few creepy music tracks. I have Nunsmasher making a few for me, but this is a big project, and I think it's gonna take more than me and nun to make all the music.

Yeah, about that... Lovecraft is notorious for being impossible to turn into film, so there are no movies (other than 1 silent movie of CoC) that ACTUALLY show his work. That coupled with the fact that he leaves a lot up to imagination, there are just no good representations of the characters outside of the books. But I can point you in the right direction--- Look up fashions of America in the 1910's and 20's. That is what these characters would be wearing. They are mostly every day folks from the 20's with very few exceptions. So that shouldn't be too hard.

I am sure it will be going on for a while. This is my excuse to drag on a project and always have something to work on lol. But Dagon is coming along quite quickly. I may have it done sooner than expected.2011-08-25 20:43:00

Amazing project. I can't wait to see it.

If you want I can help you with gameplay ideas or as a simple tester.

I think I may take gamplay design off my list of desired help, and just have this thread open for ideas. It is a bit hard to convey how my sackbot works, but he moves more like a person than a sackboy. He stays in the front most plane, No swinging ability, but he can jump a short distance, he has a flash light, and he can drag things. It controls pretty much like LIMBO, but with a flashlight. This is to keep the game more controlled, and open up the backdrop for more scenery. It is a true 2D sidescroller.

Any Ideas on how I can make some interesting puzzles or mechanics? Whoever gives an idea that makes it into the game will be credited.

My mistake, should've looked up H.P. Lovecraft movies first. xD Thank you for the advice though. So no specific looks for any characters, no exact pieces that you recall for characters in his short stories.

Also, while you don't need any help on gameplay, are the only lcoations you need made being the two in the spoiler, New England and, something else

No, no specific costumes, just mens and womens clothing from the 20's, and I will adjust the costumes to my needs. Also, when it comes time to do any actual buildings, I will repost that. It was just looking forward to my possible needs.

Oh okay, as for puzzles and mechanics, I can try to think of something, but if I do, since sadly I haven't read much of Lovecraft,(even though I need to, his stories sound amazing) I wouldn't relate to objects in stories, just maybe objects as examples, like say, a basketball. Then you can maybe fit it in if it's a good enough puzzle.2011-08-26 17:39:00

Most Cthulu games I've played feature a sanity mechanic, where weaker minded people have a lower chance to cope with freaky situations and lose (part of) their sanity. It might be hard to use for your player characters unless you're going the RPG route with skill checks and such, but maybe you could use it for npcs that you can call on for help. For example, you don't want to bring a brawny but weak-minded npc to open the rusted gate of the cemetary when you suspect some horrors lurking there.

You can have that for free, no need to credit me.

Thanks for the advice, but I am drawing straight from the B&N Edition of 'Call of Cthulhu and Other Dark Tales' So I won't be adding any role playing elements. This is no Lovecraft tribute... Just straight up Lovecraft.

A slightly sized-up sackbot with a small head (smaller than the Sackboy's ratio of head-body size, I mean) might do the trick. Costumed so that it looks slimy, green and ominous. Then again, it depends on the style of gameplay. If you want them to thrill the players, to make them patrol while the they has to stealthily sneak around or openly fight them all creatinators blazing.2011-08-29 20:37:00

Hey folks, this project IS NOT dead. I just started a new semester at my university, so I haven't had time to get on LBP for a bit, but it will even out soon. Don't lose faith just yet 2011-09-09 06:22:00
