Sackbots on Skateboards.

Archive: 7 posts

yeah, yeah ; the ubiquitous Skateboard but i have a valid reason for wanting to use that object .

I need Sackbots to ride, and control Skateboards in a movie/cutscene.
Any suggestions about how this might be done well, would be greatly appreciated.

getting this to work is important to me, because the Movie is for a friend who passed away last year.
She loved riding her skateboard.

well, first im sorry fro your loss, and second u could put a controlinator on the skateboards then change the sackbot settings to use controlinator and then record ur actions and press loop so lets say there was a ramp and a ramp put together, the sackbot would go back and forth on the ramp over and over again if thts what u made it record. hope this helps2011-08-22 15:25:00

thankyou for your reply apparently there's a way to make it so the Sackbot can stand upright without a controlinator.
guessing that it might involve tag-followers , i experimented with those, and the result was very glitchy : the Sackbot along with the skateboard would rise upwards, off the floor, and keep going upwards !

One of the easiest solutions is to build a small box of invisible rubber on top of the skateboard, to keep sackthing from flying off. Sounds inelegant and cheap, but that's how movies do it - get the result, then make it look pretty. And everything will retain its natural weight during jumps and thrusts without requiring you to lay on the R1 button for more than triggering stunts.

If it were me, I'd do the rubber and block out my shots for the movie, then add particular grabs and arms-out animations as needed. A microchip with on-grab sensors would trigger short timers for rotators, movers, gyrators, to pop and thrust the skateboard in very natural, very brief actions without requiring me to do more than just press R1, then it's just a matter of timing the recording and setting the cameras for the full take. There's a high degree of variation since physics are at work, so each scene will always be a little bit different. It'd be important to include logic that, regardless of the skateboard's position during a stunt, it hits the ground wheels down. Again if it's me, best thing would be to add invisible holo periodically along the movie's ride scene where stunts will "land" to override logic and make the skateboard correct its angle.

I'll try the "small box of invisible rubber on top of the skateboard" solution, as you suggested.
that might indeed free the Sackbot up to do various maneuvers ; grabs and the like.

thankyou

Does the sackbot need to get on and off of the board?

You can glue a bit of holo to the skate board, and you can bolt a bit of holo to a sackbot... so glue the bolted sackbot to the board.

You then set up sackbot logic to disable walk, set up movement logic on the board and you're halfway there.

The reason I asked about the on/off thing is you can't really jump on to this board setup but you can jump off of it by using a destroyer on the bit of holo.

the Sackbot doesn't need to get on and off the board, because it's a movie level,
and I can cut to another sackbot (dressed in an identical costume to the first one) for that bit.
so I'll try what you said as well .
