PS3 turned itself off suddenly.

Archive: 22 posts

Okay. You guys have probably heard this spiel before, but hear me out.

I was playing a random game (CoD to be exact), when suddenly my PS3 just shuts itself off and the "off"/red light just starts constantly flashing. I had to press the power button to make it stop flashing, but after seeing that, I decided to look on the interwebz to see what this means. In one talk, they say that it just overheats, and that you should give it plenty of space and let it cool down. In another talk, this one guy had constant failures in trying to turn his PS3 on after the first incident, concluding that he just go YLOD... YLOD. O_o

Did I just get YLOD? I didn't see a yellow light or anything... but I do have a 60G.

Its not YLOD unless its Yellow.

However, this DID start happening near the end of my old Phat's life. It would randomly shut off, and then restart... It began happening more frquently, and eventually it began Overheating a LOT.

Then... it stopped reading discs, it just stopped. I stopped using it after that.

I actually still have it. If anything happens, I'll just use it as a back-up PS3.

The yellow appears very briefly as the system shuts down it's easy to miss if you're not watching the lights.2011-08-20 09:57:00

It happens when it over heats. YLoD is caused by faulty thermal paste. So YLoD in itself is a unique over heating problem. Just give your PS3 2-4 feet of space on either side to allow for optimal breathability, and keep it away from flatscreen TVs, other consoles, and anything that puts off heat. It is also good to keep it in a dust free zone as dust can clog up the fan, and can cause static build up around the Bluray laser and cause it to malfunction. 2011-08-20 10:46:00

Well, I just tried turning it back on. It's YLOD.

About 4 years of service, over 20 different games, 4 different accounts, countless moments... all gone. And I was just about to back it up.

Do a quick revive and save what you can, at least YLODed PS3s can be revived sometimes. When my fat one broke, I couldn't recover anything. 2011-08-20 23:41:00

Shame bro.
To get the disk out, you can just hold the power button and then the eject button.

Let this be a lesson to anyone that hasn't backed up!

Many people have good luck fixing it themselves. The YLoD is not limited to just the thermal paste. Any place in the system that achieves temperatures high enough to melt solder can cause a YLoD. This means that it might not be the CPU, it could be the GPU or the PSU. PSU's are harder to repair.

You'd have the best results sending it to a third party repair service.

As you may have heard me whining in other threads, I finally got the YLoD on my 1st Gen (week 1) 60G ps3. I was so ****** at sony. They charge more than the value of a PS3 that old to fix it. So I went and bought a brand new 160G and yeah... All's well that ends well. I was shocked that the new model came with a dual shock, as I was still rockin' 1 White Dual Shock, 1 specialty xbox controller for PS3, and 2 Six Axis. **** felt like a bonus. Now I have 5 controllers. Too bad sony doesn't allow the 7 player split screen on anything. Yall remember that ****? and the boomerang controllers? Good thing those 2 features never made the final cut.2011-08-22 13:13:00

Bomberman Ultra seems to support 7 local players but thats all on one screen not split screen.

If you send your PS3 to Sony you'll typically get a refurbished PS3 and lose all of your data still.2011-08-22 14:32:00

There's still a chance...

Mines the exact same as yours. Fat 60GB, 4 years.
...And I fixed it. Didn't loose anything. Been going for a month now. (Note signature)

Huh, I wish I could he-

Wait... we live fairly close, maybe I could give you my old PS3 to use until you get a new one? It won't read discs, but you'll be able to play any games I've got on my PSN if you want...

Thanks for the offer, but no thanks. I'm not sure how my parents would feel about that.

I'll try Aya's method first (as in fixing it myself). I'll probably ask him later on how he fixed his. I'm watching that video ATMLVE put up right now, so hopefully I'll understand a little bit more about fixing one of these things and/or what options are available for me.

Thanks for the help, guys. Now it's just a matter of time to see what ends up happening...

I don't know how you feel about it but in my opinion, avoid slim if possible. I'd rather get it sent to Sony and get a refurbished phat then a new slim. You lose so many good features (mainly PS2 support and the extra USB ports).

@TheSweet: You can buy replacement blu-ray drives. The same thing happened to me, I just haven't gotten around to fixing it yet.

His PS3 sounds old, like mine... even if you can fix it, it will just fail again. Its better to get a slim and save the hassle.

Mine was a launch, so I know what happens. If you replace the thermal paste and that is the issues it will last another good 3 - 5 years (something else might fail before then). Slim's have just the same possibility to fail. They are cheaper after all.2011-08-25 14:41:00
