Short, usless reviews?

Archive: 37 posts

Well, I published a small multiplayer minigame specifically to see if people would point some things out for me. (What I should add, remove, edit, etc)

And so I wait for a player to play it.
And wait.
And wait.

Until I finally got a review, and all it said was "Boring".

I mean, I would appreciate a reason as to why it is, so I could possibly fix it.
Sadly, I don't get very many people to come in and out of my planet, so it's hard for me to get a good idea of what to mess with in the level. (Not asking for plays, don't worry!)

Anyone else have problems with short reviewers? And yes I understand kids play it and do the short reviews, it just irritates me a bit.

It is very annoying, Some people need to learn the difference between a comment and a review.

Out of the 100 odd reviews on my level, there's maybe 2 that offer constructive criticism.
The others are the usual 'ogm mM pike nao' rubbish, unexplained criticism such as 'sucks you *censored*' or random nonsense such as 'woooooooof''.

:kz: It's probably because right after a level, it tells you to 'Yay' or 'Boo' & Review it right smack dab on the Screen. Kids, of course, are going to take a Short-Cut & Review it instead of Comment on it. If Mm made 'Review It!' into 'Comment It!' It wouldn't be a problem. But, yes, very, very, annoying.2011-08-19 21:38:00

I know how you feel. I actually got a review like that on my level. I deleted a review of some kid slandering my level. Next thing I know, he writes another slandering me by saying, "u suck cow balls". When I read that, I burst out laughing and decided to keep his review there so everyone can see how much of a fool he is.

But I happily have some people who have actually reviewed it, paragraphs and all. I admit short reviews are annoying, but kids are kids and usually don't know any better. If they slander me or my levels, I just leave a "nice" comment on their profile to guide them in the right direction.

my levels & whatnot is my house so to speak, if I don't like something you said, then I'm kicking you out~

I delete/boo (if it's not my levels) and one word/meaningless sentence reviews. I can't stand them. Even worse then comments.2011-08-19 22:47:00

On my REsistance level, the first couple plays people 3 people left reviews, two of them were long review which actually helped me improve, while the third one was just "cool!" So i'm not sure, he's probably just some bratty kid.2011-08-19 23:31:00

Eh. I don't get alot of reviews, but the occasional short one is a little irritating. I get the whole... "OMGZ I c a texbox in my lvlz recunt activatagh!!" and then it turns out to be nothing but a few irrelevant tags and 1 word. Most disappointing moment(s) of LBP, really. I normally delete these. So long as someone puts effort into a review... Say... 3 or 4 lines at least? I'm more than happy to leave it up, regardless of the content. But the reviews that should be in the comments section get the del-hammer.

Also, I'm totally in favour of a comment option at the end of levels. I'd be far more inclinced to use that. I dunno about other people, but I never use the review option, because it intimidates me a little. People will read what I write and... Judge me as a critic! :G But with comments I feel free to write as much, or as little, in any style I choose.

Do you know what I really hate? My level has, I think, 100% positive feedback. And it's TERRIBLE, I made it in 2 hours and I never used the grid option ONCE. I look at good levels and see people moaning and saying pointless stuff about a level which really deserves reasonable feedback. It's like good and bad are inverted to the majority of little kids who are (if this isn't too harsh a term) ruining LBP 1/2. Yeah, it does suck. 2011-08-20 03:19:00

One thing I don't like just as much as short and useless reviews - Nonsense reviews.
Reviews that are hardly reviews or even make any sense, like "WHEEEEEE AHHHHHH WHEEEEEE LOL" or "I'M FLYING XD" or "funny funny funny funny funny" or "SONIC RULES and cool and bye lol", and "gg". Those are all real reviews I've gotten on my levels. What does "gg" even mean? I've seen yays and boos saying "gg".

I don't delete anything unless it's offensive. The person who leaves a stupid review is getting their punishment by looking stupid to the community. I leave it up as a tribute to their stupidity.2011-08-20 17:32:00

I just think they click the boo'd button on accident when I see that.
Sometimes I see reviews that say "Good" but are boo'd, so...

Also I think gg can also be "Good Game"

What Tmjtk said.

"gg" ("good game") came about with competitive Internet gaming. It got big in the late 1990s with the popularity of Starcraft, etc., although you could see it in some FPS shooters which allowed for chat text, but things very quickly diverged in mannerisms. One-on-one games were regarded as chess matches, so a certain politeness was expressed even if one person trounced the other in gameplay. You "shake hands" at the end, being a good winner or loser. Since most people only had 2-5 seconds between rounds to say something if the other person quit, "gg" was a fast and friendly shortcut.

Purists will say it is only correctly used in regard to competitive play, and intended for the other player(s). So if anyone is saying "gg" to you it should be because you played a versus level against them, and is not a comment on the quality of the level. It makes no sense to say "gg" to you if they both hated the level, and have never played against you in that or any versus level. But the Internet is the great equalizer: a five year old and a fifty year old have equal standing and ability to shape online culture, and younger generations actually have two advantages, which are ignorance and energy. So if someone wants to say "gg" and have that mean they hated your level, I guess we have to accept that's what it means now... I'll admit to being perplexed in LBP1 when I got a rash of reviews saying HK15. 15 Hong Kong dollars? A player's name? Shorthand for a request like H4H, P4P? Who knows. No sense stressing about it though, chances are it was being misused by virtually everyone who was copy pasting it around the game anyway, if it had meaning to begin with. ^^;

Sometimes I leave short reviews. I don't really see anything wrong with that. LBP can be very time consuming even when you're just playing so you should probably be glad someone took the time to comment at all. I do agree that single word reviews like "boring" can be annoying though especially when there's a flood of them that drowns out the actual reviews.

Something else that annoys me sometimes is that I don't actually have enough space to properly say what I want to say and part of it gets cut off or I have to type a much shorter review for it to make any sense.

I usually write, I liked this, didn't like that, but this was cool, that; not so much.

But the other day I did a one word review. I wrote 'Fantastic' because it all I could really say at that time.

EDIT: Yay, this if you agree!11!!1!

In one of my levels, the first review I got was "Dis is S***".

I checked out his profile and he said he was a 14-year old white rapper. Makes me wonder.

Anyways, I could show you but apparently his review got deleted, I didn't do it though (actually I don't know how to delete reviews on my levels).

This isn't new in gaming though. The other day I was playing CodBo(yeah I love it) with my brother and there was this kid (7-10 years old I presume from the voice) that kept dropping those F-bombs. In my childhood years, you don't even get to have a snide comment or you get "the belt, or "the cord".

Kids these days...

That's one reason I switched to MAG.

Anyway, at least something like that I'd be fine with, because your being sorta constructive.
But when someone says "Broken" or "Boring" etc, it would be nice if they would explain why.

Here's another type of review I hate. Ones that I can't even understand. This is one I actually got on my Super Mario Fighter level.

"i think sonic better thats i hate but the good level i played yoshi"

... I'm sorry but, what?!

Oh I NEVER delete feedback no matter what it is, even if it's just someone trolling or something that doesn't make sense. And yes, I find those types of reviews hilarious, sometimes even better than actual reviews. But still, I have no idea what he's talking about.

Yes, I love them too. They're very entertaining to read, and I get a lot of them, probably due to the age group of my fanbase. I don't hate these reviews at all, but still, I have no idea what the reviewer was trying to say.

Short reviews can be a bit irritating, but what's more irritating is that the short one or two word review getting lots of yays, which gets considered the highest rated review, which ends up on the front pages. -___-'2011-08-29 01:04:00

I don't really get short reviews. Just really bad ones. It seems that everyone who reviews my levels don't actually play them.
I made a level parodying noobs who make clan levels, (it even says that it's not an actual clan in the description), I think only one person actually played it, because everyone else went "Boo, this is a terrible clan" and one guy even asked how to join.

Remember, not everyone has a keyboard. For some people it might take 2 minutes to write that short review.
But it's still annoying when they shorten words to the point it looks like they just typed a bunch of random letters and numbers, and then they have the nerve to call you stupid for not understanding them.

In my house it was all about The Wooden Spoon.

If I said 'huh?' or 'what' my parent's answer was always 'Pardon...?' It was said in a way that was between 'What did you just say?' and "You mean 'pardon'... DONT YOU"

The Wooden Spoon was rarely (if ever) used but you knew that it was There... in The Drawer... and somehow the tone conveyed that you were pushing you luck if you responded with 'Yeah, I said 'what?'"
