The Calamitous Clock: Guardian of Time

Archive: 19 posts

Hey folks I just published the follow up to one of my most successful levels. This is mostly a platformer with some story added in as well. Make sure you grab the journals to learn more about the story and earn 500 points for each journal you read.

The level may seem short but its mainly because most of the platforming is fast-paced. Thanks to the folks who tested this including missi-cat, biorogue, arklon, stickmandude, brucethejam, hogflu. If I left your name off please let me know and I will add you. Special thanks to enochroot for the idea of the story waaaaay back when I was making the first one.

I would love to hear what you think, any feedback is always much appreciated.

Yeah, I had a determination to stay up late and finish it. Thanks for testing it. I hope you enjoy the finished product. Its the most fun I've had making a level in quite a while.2011-08-19 21:56:00

Played this level earlier and here are my thoughts:

Great insight into the Calamitous Clock storyline. I read about the journals, but I didn't think about getting them. I'll have to play it again to read them. As always, this is a well done level and your creative style is all over it. I had fun playing this level. The gameplay was smooth and well balanced. Not much else to say other than good job again. I am looking forward to playing the rest of the series. I did not find any gameplay issues or bugs.

Thank you for creating and sharing this level. Keep it up, you're a good creator. Don't let the lack of plays on your levels disappoint you. Appreciate the small amount that do play and leave you feedback. That is what matters.

this looks good, will add it to the queue.

this was a fun platformer. clean visuals, fun gameplay and felt like the story complemented the level well. Really liked the oversized clock near the end. good job.
ps darkening dreams is one of my favorites.

@garak, thanks again for great feedback. I'm glad you liked it. I suppose its a good thing that I don't look at plays as a source of success. I look at the hearts to plays ratio and right now my level has a hearts to plays percentage at about 26%. I really wish cool pages worked off that instead of levels being played the most.

@juscallmej, thanks for playing and feedback. Glad you enjoyed it.

P.S. darkening dreams is favorite? Thanks! Eastern gate to the forsaken desert is the sequel but the gameplay is different from darkening dreams.

Another outstanding level from Shookie. The story was very engaging and left me wanting to see the next part of the series. Solid platforming as usual. My favorite part being the clever use of the bounce pads. ....and I found all the journals!
Well done dude.

Thanks for the feedback jerry! The double bouncing is my favorite part as well. The next level in this series will not be out for a while but its gonna be called The Loathesome Library. Thanks again.2011-08-21 17:27:00

Looking forward to it. can't wait to see it. Also looking forward to the desert part of darkening dreams. Those dang robots at the end looked cool. I think you may have found your stride with deeper stories.

I played this as soon as I saw you had published it. I always look forward to your levels, shookie99! The story was wonderful. I really liked reading the journals along the way to get a better feel of the story. The gameplay was fun and challenging. I recommend this level to anyone. It was awesome!2011-08-22 02:54:00

Hi, thanks for posting on F4F thread. Played your level last night, it is very well designed with an intriguing story that makes me want to come back for more. However I did feel at a few areas that gaps were a bit too big at times to jump over causing death and felt a bit cheated without prior knowledge. It may also just be my lack of skill and tolerance. Below are pictures or two of those areas:

Also it was hard to see the material that you were suppose to grab onto above the spike in the top right of this picture. Since they are in the back layer. Maybe it's just me but it took me several deaths to realise this.

Although challenging in areas, the platforming and obstacles are very clever and works well in your level. I look forward to your next level. Overall it's a great level.

I agree with you, LittleBigDes. When you first starting talking about the challenging areas, I had in my head exactly what your first picture shows lol I also thought it was maybe because I just wasn't skilled enough, even though I play levels like this all day. It is a wonderful level, and I can't wait for more from Shookie99.2011-08-22 17:44:00

@littlebigdes, the first picture you showed, its momentum based and you should not stop at all, just keep running as fast as you can and you should get plenty of height, enough that you don't even need the grapple hook there. And the second picture, just jump on it when its beolow and land on it again after it has rotated 180 degrees.

Just remember on those sections in your first picture to hit the bounce pad running and don't jump on it, let it do the work for you.

Well I liked your level enough so I'll be giving it another go. Strange as I kept running after I realised and still had to use the grapple hook to get over as it sent me into the spikes quite a few times. BUT it's more like my lack of skill or the game engine/lag. Regardless it's a good level and I enjoyed it.

Thanks! Tip...once you hit the vertical bouncepads and fly to the right, immediately push your analog to keep the momentum, and don't stop at all. Better yet if you add me on psn we can play it together. Send me a request. Thanks again!2011-08-24 03:21:00

Yikes! You finished and published this level pretty dang fast. Anyways, great job on yet another platforming masterpiece from SX_Shookie99, even though it didn't wow me as much as your previous Clock level.

VISUALS:
It looked as neatly polished as your previous Calamitous Clock level thanks to good material choices and some good movements like the pendulum with a checkpoint.

SOUND:
Good music choices.

GAMEPLAY:
The platforming is spot on, thanks to some clever obstacles and good use of grappling hook and bounce pads. However, I didn't see anything new compare to the first Clock level, but I still really enjoy it.

OVERALL:
It didn't top the first installment, but it's still a lot of fun. Looking forward to your next installment. A yay and heart.

Thanks justinart! Yeah I wanted the gameplay to be similar to the first and keep its platforming roots and remember the first level was just a nightmare and not real, so I wanted the clock to still feel like it did in the first. Thanks for the feedback. It will be a while before I get back to this series.2011-08-25 23:34:00

An extremely polished version of the great platforming level that was the first incarnation of this level. The gameplay was challenging but never unfair and the flow/ direction was perfect. The addition of the story added momentum to the progress and boosted the explorative element via the book device for players who like to search and grab every secret they can. Looking forward to the next installment and seeing where the narrative and gameplay lead. Hearted and recommended.2011-08-28 23:11:00

Hey enoch! Thanks dude! Glad to know you liked it and thanks for helping a bit with the story way back when, lol. I wanted it to have the familiar style of the first but still keep it fresh and new as well, as I changed a bit of the design elements yet kept some familiar gameplay and set pieces too like the big pendulum. Next in the series will be the loathesome library which I am tinkering with the idea to make it exploration and task based with some backtracking as well to advance. But I have a few other levels and projects to hash out first but I'm still looking forward to building it. Thanks again mate.2011-08-30 01:42:00
