Comparing The Characters of LBP2 to LBP1

Archive: 13 posts

Simple premise, really. How do you feel the characters of LBP2 stack up against the characters of LBP1?

For my own little thoughts on them

General Notes

-The LBP1 cast is surprisingly larger than the LBP2 cast, with only 7 main characters (w/o Sacky) compared to at least 12 main characters in LBP1, albeit you see the LBP2 cast for far longer in-story).
-There are deeper back stories for the LBP2 cast, aside from the Negativitron and Eve [Refer to Rookie Test].
-Only one boss character in LBP2 as opposed to...more in LBP1.

Individual Characer Breakdown

LBP2;

-Larry Da Vinci; Kind and down to Craftworld, even if somewhat senile and sometimes too clever for his own good. Has long yearned for Victoria.
-Victoria Von Bathysphere; Neurotic but sweet, oblivious to Larry's affection.
-Clive Handyworth; A hard worker, but lacks selfconfidence and courage. Graduated with Avalon and Herbert.
-Avalon Centrifuge; Egotistical as heck and anti-social. However, his ego isn't completely unjustified, he has a brilliant mind capable of building the latest technology in Craftworld. Possible adult traits stem from childhood nerdiness? Graduated with Clive and Herbert.
-Eve Silva Paragorica; Gentle, caring, has a cheery 'team mom' spirit (the Negativitron suggested that she was vain, but there wasn't any evidence of this within the story...?)
-Herbert Higginbottom; Cloud Cuckoo Lander incarnate, but has a very scientific/philosophical mind. Graduated with Clive and Avalon.
-The Negativitron; Evil...and um, that's it.

LBP1;

-The King; Kind, friendly, jolly. Knows of Zola's plight.
-The Queen; More motherly, acts more of the guide role.
-King Zola; Stern, but fair. Directs Sacky to Frida's wedding.
-King Croc; While he is mean, he's not totally despicable, and is innocent in the Savannah levels.
-Meerkat Mum; Lazy, accusative but concerned for her children.
-Frida; Literally love crazy. Is smitten when in love but insane when she feels jilted. Invites Sacky long with her and Don Lu to the Canyon honeymoon.
-Don Lu; Loving groom-to-be, upset when he can't physically make it to the church.
-The Dog; D'aww doggy!
-Uncle Jalapeno; Typical sheriff (ironically), friendly to Sacky. Is good friends with Mags.
-Sheriff Zapata; Scum, wants to control the town itself by locking up Jalapeno and blowing him up.
-Mags the Mechanic; Cheery, outgoing girl. Intelligent too. Is good friends with Jalapeno.
-Ze Dude; Surprisingly...complex? He at first seems like another typical villain, wanting to ruin Mags and her garage/construction site for the heck of it. Then, after you defeat him, he reveals that he trained under Sensei, and allows you to take his private jet to the Islands. Now, Sensei is clearly good, so was Ze Dude good all along? If so, what was his motive for collaborating with the Collector and messing with Mags? Was he evil? Then why did Sensei train him? Was he brainwashed by the Collector?
Grandmaster Sensei; A wise, noble ninja master. Trained Ze Dude and bought a flame-throwing cat from the Shopkeeper.
The Terrible Oni; One big demon.
The Shopkeeper; Helpful, lively, knows the Goddess.
The Great Magician; Cryptic, knowledgable, has the power to be able to whisk you to the Wilderness on his lonesome. The Goddess holds him in high regard.
The Collector; A Curator who felt isolated and neglected by the others, thus went mad with jealously and revenge. Is redeemed in the final scene when everyone reassures him that they're happy to be his friend.

So...yeah. Compare if you dare!

Interesting comparison right there. Considering that LBP2's NPC are deeper involved in the plot, have real voice acting and are much more dynamic (being sackbots with a custom behaviour instead of mechanical statues) I'd say LBP2's characters function better as a cast. Though they lack that handmade charm and cultural feel the characters had in LBP1, as LBP2's art is based on genres (sci-fi, steampunk, medieval, etc.) instead of regions of the world.2011-08-19 18:19:00

The LBP2 cast still seems like they're handmade to me. They're made of household objects. Da Vinci is made of newspaper and cardboard, Victoria is a doll, Clive is made of office supplies, the Sackbots are made of wood, and Higginbotham's head is a box of matches. Not sure what to say about Avalon or Eve though. 2011-08-19 18:37:00

Just to put it out there, Eves an apple and Avalon is a sack thing. I've never thought of Victoria as being a doll though, but now I see it.

And about the comparison, I'd say I really liked the LBP2 cast more, just because they were...actually characters rather than just "characters" who told you where to go next. I can see why people like LBP1's cast (the charm and all) but I just can't relate. I'd rather be immersed in a story and it felt way less empty with the cut scenes, like you had someone going on the adventure with you and reacting to all the same events. In LBP1, they had emotion in the text, but it just wasn't the same. That's just me though

I should get LBP1 off the shelf again and relive the old memories form my first PS3 game
Not only that but also completing the game again, because I only thought of backing LBP2's profile up and after my PS3 died my LBP1 data was lost.

Hmm.
Interesting thread. >Strokes imaginary detective's moustache<

If we could turn LBP1 into LBP2...

The King=Da Vinci
The Queen=Victoria
Frida=Eve
The Scientist=Higginbotham
Zola=Avalon
Don Lu=Clive
The Collector=NO IDEA
The Collector's robot boss=The Negativitron...

I actually prefer the collector as a character, it wasn't an all-out baddie which I liked. Plus, he's much more fun to watch animated as the catching a sackthing level showed.2011-08-21 19:51:00

I honestly thought he just didn't want to go. I mean, Frida is pretty psychotic, so it's understandable.

Something both games have in common? They have characters that could be much more involving if they had more depth to them.

There was a glitch where you could go to LBP1 levels using level links. Possibly that?

Nope. I can't remember who it is, but a certain creator made a very good recreation of The Collector's boss level in LBP2, with The Bunker included. Da Vinci introduces them.
Does that answer your question?
