Way of Light - SPOTLIGHTED - PICS

Archive: 22 posts

Hello everybody,

I will promote today another of my published level.

Level: Way of Light
Creator: Takelow (PSN)
Location: Near France

This level was initially more a challenge for me and a way to learn a lot with lightings than a real construction of a level for publishing. However some of my friends would like to play it and loved it very much. So i published it several weeks ago.

Overall presentation:
At the start of the level, a living spotlight tell you that you are in a forbidden place and that there is now only one way to reach your pod. A dangerous one for a Sackboy. Then, the spotlight propose you to help you giving you his ?way of light?. The only thing to do is to jump in the hole now?I guess this level is interesting in its spotlight use and could be really fun to play for some players.
It is actually not very length and was designed mainly for 1 player.

I would like to add that when I created and published this level, i didn?t know at all the now well-known ?Illumina Garden?. I played it now, and found it great. But I think that even if the concept of total darkness is the same, the two levels are really different in their global aspects.

You already know what I think about this and I already sent you my suggestions via PM before you put this showcase together so my comments are simply for those who have not played it yet.

I have played quite a few levels that play on the themes of light and dark and let me tell you that this one is second to none. If you have played Takelows other levels you will know that this is a creator who has mastered the art of using light effectively in a level and this level is his centerpiece for that technique. The level is beautiful, brilliant and gorgeous and will have you saying "wow" on more then one occassion. There is a very cool puzzle towards the end and the whole level just has a great flow to it. 5 stars and HEARTED! This is the 4th level from Takelow I have hearted and everyone really needs to check ou his work, you will not be disappointed

That was a great level, like usual. Your use of the light was really well done. I feel that it might have been too dark sometimes, but for the most part it was great.2008-12-30 01:42:00

Pretty fantastic use of lighting... I enjoyed the block/jetpack section alot - you seem to be a fan of that stuff. Your main strength in levels is your eye for color, even in Quest it was the color that made it breathe. I like the touches here how you used non-traditional lighting objects such as sensors and checkpoints. If I could have one thing in this level it would be a bunch of hopped up ravers pouting hilarious dialogue and OD'ing in a secret bathroom full of points,. The discontinued music would be great for that.

Anyway, all jokes aside, this was a pretty impressive synchronization of light settings and small mechanics.

you should try my "nightmare in darkness" level,
same concept, but way way more psycho
In a less.. colorfull way.

so you can get an idea what can really be done with switches and lighting

First of all, Thank you a lot for your comments and suggests.

OCK, your words are always kind. I'm glad you loved this levels as well

Thank you BassDeluxe. You are not the only one that felt my level is too dark at some places. I think there is one or two sections where it could be the case. But the main concept of the level is "total darkness with only visual clues"'. So i think that the problem here is more a failure in visual clues on some places than a too dark level.
Nevertheless, i will try to ameliorates these sections.

Thank you NinjaMicWZ.
I admit i love a lot the jet-pack use...as will be for the paintinator (but i don't think i will use the later in my last project). I think these objects give a great gameplay value.

I'm sure your level is certainly brilliant. But the next time, try to write a word or two on MY LEVEL (the one the thread is about...but did you even tried to play it?), before to promote yours
So, with a so little feedback from you, i regret to say that i will not try it for now

Yeah, definitely only use it when it fits... there's obviously a huge influx of paintinator levels, but I certainly don't want to see the traditional LBP level design fundamentals forgotten and replaced by paintinator, or it being used as a crutch for shoddy levels. The design and idea of an area will always take precedence over the inclusion of shooting IMO, and it definitely shouldn't be tacked on as an afterthought. I only used it in my Metal Slug level because it had just come out and made me go "oh, that will be perfect" since it was based on 2D shooters to begin with.

It would be ridiculous, for example, if I went back and tried to put a paintinator into any of my other levels - it would make no sense thematically and would entirely change the gameplay for the worse. Same for anybody's pre-MGS projects. People tend to just hold R1 and run now, and it was hard enough to make them stop running and think before.

One thing I've liked in recent levels - 1.) Confused Cartman forcing the paintinator to become a patient and methodical weapon 2.) Jaeyden giving it a reason for it to be in the level... since it's so futuristic looking, it definitely can't fit medieval or fantasy etc themes so it's nice to see people explaining their way out of the way it looks

"Ramp V 2.0 - Now with broken paintinator!" no thanks

I didn't get all the way through this level because my cat kept jumping on my lap and being cute and then knocking the keyboard and controller out of my hands... but I will say this: This is one of the most unique uses of light that I've seen in a level. It was a little hard to see at parts, but I'm not very good at video games, either. I have to play through this one again, but this level is pretty nice looking and a great idea.2009-01-01 13:36:00

NinjaMicWZ, i completely agree with you.
I however have had yesterday a third exemple of well used paintinator: "Boss Battle 1:Gelulupas" by BassDelux.

xkappax, thank you for the kinds words. I appreciate it a lot. I hope you could replay my level (and finished it) later

I had a lot of comments such this one. I will definitely update the level, as soon as possible.

No problem

Ok heres what i thought

The use of light was phenomenal(sorry about spelling) I thought it was very clever how you pointed the way with lights

I also liked the way you used checkpoints as lights

Some things i think you need to fix are like sometimes i couldnt see where i was going. And i spent like twenty minutes trying to get up those stairs that you light up, i think you should make them a little bigger. Oh and the green key switch kept breaking

Other than that i like this level alot, nice work

Coolest use of lights I have seen in LBP so far, great job there! I have to say that I found it a little too dark in some areas, especially the section with the jetpack as I kept flying around hitting "dark" walls for a while. It reminded me of Space Mountain (which is a great thing btw) as it had the same atmosphere sometimes.
Great work on this nonetheless!

As i told fex post above, i think it is more a failure in visual clues that a too dark state. I will fix this i soon as i will have the time.

Hi xkappax,

Thank you for the kind words
Actually, Way of Light and Color of Sound, are two of my firsts levels.
Since you liked them, i advise you to take a look to my two last spotlighted levels, The Quest of the Great Pyramid and SpaceOpera.

As I said above, this level is rich both in the visual point that the construction. It's one of the famous use of light i've seen in LBP !
The only negative point is some passages actually a little bleak. However, I think that these passages enable the level of profits in mystery because otherwise the structure is fairly linear.
Great great job Take

I finally managed to get a chance to play this level. As others have said, it's got some fantastic and innovative uses of light, often in ways that you don't expect. The lights on the sensor switches stand out in my mind as being very original.

I have some feedback for you as well...

The first speech bubble I think has the word "forbiden" in it. It should be "forbidden" with two d's.

It might be nice to add some sort of task complete sound when you finally get the three keys in the right position. I think it would add to the moment.

I somehow managed to get stuck with the metal bound jetpack. I missed the save point at the top and died, and so came back at the part down where the jetpack to the large room is. With the metal jetpack in the wrong spot I could not continue and had to restart.

It might be better to increase the weight of this jetpack so it's harder to drag around, and put some guiding light to the checkpoint up the top. I only noticed it on the second play through, it's completely dark and a bit lower than just flying through the pasage. Maybe you could put LED lights around the frame.

But overall it was a great level, so good that I just had to finish it. I even came second on the scoreboard. BassDeluxe was the one who beat me.

Ah yes, the choice of music was great too before I go. It really fitted the theme and atmosphere well.
