Sackbot Dialogue

Archive: 15 posts

Ok, here is the scenario.

I have 2 sackbots, lets call them Mom and Dad. I am wanting each one to say about 4 lines of dialogue.

I have used tags and sensors to get Dad through 2 lines, and Mom through 3 lines.

My problem is after the player carries Dad back to Mom and the two sackbots are 'face to face'.

I have tried having the MAGIC MOUTH outputs connected to an AND GATE, with a BATTERY in the other input, and the output hooked to a TAG. Then having the corresponding TAG SENSOR hooked to the next MAGIC MOUTH on the other Sackbots SEQUENCER. For some reason that is not working.

So, can any of you Master Creators give a little time and tell me how to figure this out?

If you need more info just let me know and I will try giving you any info you need.

Thank you,

Shinji

Hmmm... it's seeming a little unclear as to what it is you are doing, and what it is you want to do. Could you perhaps elaborate a little?

I mean, do you want Dad to say something, and then Mum to say something when he comes back?

Ok, here is the order of events:

Mom: Greets the player and sends you on a errand, triggered by a player sensor.
Dad: tells you something, triggered by player sensor.
Mom: tells you something, triggered by you bringing an object to her.
Dad: tells you something triggered by a tag sensor.
Mom: Says something when you bring Dad home, triggered by a tag on Dad's microchip.

That is where I am able to get it to. From there I want Dad to say something, Mom to say something, and Dad to say one last thing.

I can not figure out how to trigger the other dialogues.

Use a sequencer, say , you yu put a movie on it , raise it to however long, you want them to talk, the put a battery when you want them to say something, and on the Microchip, put a smaller sequencer, with magic mouths so thats when they talk, and then put another battery after the mom/dad is talking. Sorry if i;m not explaining to well.2011-08-18 01:21:00

Actually that does make sense, and would work once you 'bring Dad home'. Just need to brush up on making movies and I can do that tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.2011-08-18 01:31:00

Just to be on the safe side double check your MC for corresponding tags not on the same chip b/c they don't work when on same chip. Made that mistake so many times...2011-08-18 05:56:00

Haven't we all? xD But yea. Use a sequencer. That should work best.

Don't forget you can give your sackbots 'actor' names. Then stick magic mouths anywhere in the level (preferably on a sequencer if this is a sequential event - else stick it somewhere centralized where you process variables to come to the decision which dialogue to start) and set each mouth to its respective actor. When activated it will appear as if that sackbot is talking.

Keep the dad-only and mom-only dialogue logic you have so far. The last bit of back-and-forth between mom and daddy-oh I would stick on a single sequencer, probably on mom's innards (since she is triggered by pops arrival).

If I name the actors 'Mom' and 'Dad' will that give a 2nd order when sorting stuff out. As in 'Dad tag red' will not trigger just a 'red' tag?2011-08-18 12:01:00

This may help you visualise it more:

Ignore my batteries and what they're connected to as these were wrong in my intitial set-up. I deleted these and used tags and tag sensors to trigger the different behaviour chips from act to idle. Also the last movie camera, I always make a copy of the 1st camera cut-scene and change it to 'track back to player' for 2 seconds on the sequencer. This gives a nice smooth transition back to the players view rather then an immediate cut.

As the sequcner plaeys, my first sackbot's magic mouth is triggered saying its dialogue. Then the second magic mouth plays after, with my 2nd sackbot saying it. It's the best way to sequence and have speech run in the order you want it to.

Des, How do I stretch my cameras and Magic Mouths? I think that would work wonders for what I am trying to do. Now in that setup the top camera centers on the character who is speaking. And the middle camera cuts to the other actor right?2011-08-18 13:11:00

Select it with the lasso and push up on the left stick to make it bigger. Push down to shorten it.

Yes, you got it, 1st camera centres in on the 1st sackbot. They overlap so it smoothly pans over to the next sackbot (soft pan setting).
