Do you finish your levels?

Archive: 31 posts

At the moment, I have about 10 levels on my moon. Not one of them has been published, and some of them I have not come back to work on for months. I just seem to lose motivation for my levels when I get about halfway through creating them. So, I wanted to know about everyone else on LBPC and if you abandon projects that you have been working on.2011-08-17 23:04:00

I only have one dead level like that, mostly because it was pain to do "stages" for it and i didn't have any ideas for more gameplay, maybe i iwll return to it later on, since it's looks pretty cool

I think thats matter of character of creator, in creating you need to have patience, since you wont build level in short time, or else you got good idea for short level.

Usually, if I'm working on a level and I never finish it, it's because I got bored of it. But most of the time, I finish my levels

Just gotta have imagination and determination

Let me tell you this right now, Ive thought of so many awesome levels and have tried to make them. My moon has been full for a week now of unfinished projects because I get stumped on how to make it and I get bored :O.2011-08-18 00:03:00

I have a few unfinished levels, sometimes i'll go mad building a level for a few days then i'll look at it and just think it's lame. Still i learn something with each level, most of the time.2011-08-18 00:58:00

Nope.
And I doubt I'll ever get off my butt and finish them.

I have a Limbo type of level which was going to the first platformer I would publish. But after I've seen a lot of harsh criticism on other Limboish levels that made it to the cool page, I dropped the idea and I'm probably not going to ever pick it back up. There's obviously no room for Limbo wannabes.

But I am making the second part to my costume level. So I actually have something to do.

I definitely know that feeling of losing motivation halfway through. 3 times I have started a level and 2 times I just went "hell with it". The first time was in LBP1, I was making a level about my Clan having an imaginary HQ, and the purpose would be a tour showing it. Then the clan I was in fell apart, and it felt pointless. The second time was half a year ago in LBP2. A cool idea popped to my mind about the way the player controls sackbots. The notion was already explored, but I never saw it done using the same method I thought of, and I had the idea for a fun setting too. But I just couldn't know where to start with the level layout, so the project kinda died. A few weeks ago I found Littlebigmeteor searching for level ideas he could develop, so I happily handed the tools to execute my plan over to him.
Right now, I'm doing a simple platformer. Something much less ambitious so the prospect of working on it isn't too frightening. I doubt it'll have much plays but this time I refuse leaving LBP2 without my contribution to the community.
I never published a level and I play since the first month LBP1 came out. In a game where everyone publishes something, it makes me feel kinda silly. I'ts like I'm a veteran of "Play" but a noob of "Create". I love doing mad little experiments on Create mode though.

I only have one level I will never publish, and that is my mess around level. It's for times when I want to create, but I don't have ideas for a serious level. All my other levels have been worked on hard by me, and eventually published.2011-08-18 20:07:00

This is one of my worst problems. I have several level starts splattered all over my moon, with many of them being in good progress (design is starting to form, but no complicated logic/things like that). It is just that I often get bored on a single subject far too quickly. Most of the levels are now just experiments in things (one of which even ended up in a short, one-evening tutorial level of mine)

I have recently brainstormed over several ideas, such as a horror-themed laboratory survival (don't get me wrong; it would have more than just falling bombs), a dance game (move your body correctly to the music, or you will lose), and a trivia game (already built the set, but suddenly lost interest in writing up questions+creating the logic required).

I've got nearly 2 moons worth of unfinished levels from both LBP1 and LBP2. It's around 70 IIRC. I've got them backed up on a flash drive somewhere . I'm planning on publishing some of the better ones, since nearly all of them use gameplay that I've never seen done before (eg: completely AI run space combat game, a rocket launch game, an alien invasion survival challenge, etc...)

Recently though I've been spending more time on levels and finishing them. My merc's versus level is one of them (....well, the ONLY one...), but my merc's co-op campaign level is coming along nicely as well.

I have 79 levels on my moon, and Ive only published 2 of them. I never finish my levels; Im generally a very impatient person with a pretty short temper, and so finishing something that takes hours on end to do just isnt for me. Still, Im workin on it.2011-08-19 01:40:00

As someone who has and always had low self-esteem, I realize that playing other people's crazy levels often has a negative impact on what I'm currently creating. It's an annoying and automatic self-destructive process that basically tells my mind ''SEE? YOUR IDEAS SUCK!!!!". By simply not playing other levels, I don't have anything left to compare so my stuff suddenly looks pretty awesome.

But to answer the TC's question, I only have one unfinished level on my moon and only one true level I made back in LBP1. LBP2's Logic made me lose a LOT of time... the hell with the Logic, I'll just craft LBP1-like levels just like Mm did with the story.

Here's what I do when I need new ideas.

Follow my gaming instinct. I look at the platforms and ask myself "When I reach the platform... what kind of Sackboy movement would be great and how can I incorporate the platforms with the theme?" The first is pretty obvious but as for incorporating the platforms, the visual theme is always the best. For example, the forest theme. Leaves swinging in the wind as platforms (challenging !), tree roots you can grapple on, landslides during rain etc. as long as you don't bother yourself with realism (HEY IT'S A PLATFORMING GAME!!) and just let the imagination do its job you can pretty much come up with anything.

Another good tip... if you have trouble coming up with an intro for your level, pacing will help you. If you want a crazy level full of colors, platforms, score bubbles and movement everywhere, make sure the very first thing players see will reflect that. Just a silly background with loads of stuff moving is enough - it "announces" them what the level will be about. You can also start it slow and slowly rake up the challenge and speed.

Make sure you're having fun, though. Creating is not the same thing as gaming/playing and you're not doing it for bragging rights - it's a very personal thing. When gaming, (most games apply), you don't need a large portion of your brain to plow thru levels. Creating, on the other hand, asks for FULL concentration. Don't bother if you're not in the mood or you'll just end up frustrated against yourself. A good cup of coffee or tea does help, though.

You're not alone. I have so many levels (almost my entire moon!) that I have quit half-way through. It hasn't stopped me from creating though! 2011-08-22 05:19:00

I have plenty of unfinished levels. I get done with the logic in the level, but then I get bored because I don't enjoy creating environments.2011-08-22 05:42:00

I never complete any of my levels to the extent I thought I would.
Here is my thought process.

1. OMG Cool Idea "insert here" totally gonna be MM picked, blah blah, fantasize, etc.
2. Create overarching plot spanning a number of levels.
3. Ok, really inefficient messy logic for the main character set up.
4. Enemy logic? I can do that. (Create even bigger mess of logic.)
6. Wait now the logic is effed up with my hero! (mess up logic even more)
5. Feature creep ensues.

At some point the project becomes so convoluted that I don't know what half the stuff I made does. At this point I either trash the concept or release what works as a tech demo.

so yeah.

Haha, nope. I have loads of levels on my moon, but I am about to finish my first LBP2 level today if I can solve a final problem on it.

Most of my levels are contraptions though. I have one that is a counting system. One is set up to photograph objects for stickers (It has a sort of template for me to place the letter I need, then activate the camera, and whamo...all of them are the same). I have a few levels from LBP1 that were just making different kinds of switches. Then loads of others that I just used as workshops for some of the ideas I never actually put into a level.

There's no shame in not publishing a level. If you look at the published level count of some of the brightest people on this forum, you'll see that a lot of them are fairly low compared to some others out there.

If you get bored half way through a level when making it perhaps you're being too ambitious? It may sound silly but have you tried making a level half the size? For example I'd you're always attempting to make a level that maxes out the thermo it will be very time consuming. Maybe if you start small, say draw up a plan to make a platformer that will last 2 to 3 minutes, maybe a puzzle type game with only 3 rooms, etc etc. But make sure you make that 2 to 3 minutes or those 3 rooms truly awesome. If you write down a load of ideas, choose the best few and incorperate them into a level. You don't have to max the thermo for a level to be brilliant.

It's just an idea, if you're really struggling to finish any level at all, starting small may be the best way to go.

Sadly, far too many of my levels don't get published. Maybe someday I'll make like an Action 5 from these levels... If anyone needs some ideas for levels, there's plenty on my moon.2011-08-25 02:17:00

I'm very patient, i finish 80% of my levels, still...
I find it helps to take long/short breaks from LBP, once in a while.
Playing another game or just doing something else.
It makes easier to create, and most of the times, the levels get made better too,

I took almost a full month break before doing my Zelda level, and i'd say it's worth it.

Never! I never finish my levels. I get many ideas and I start them, but I never finish them. Right now, I'm just working on a simple (SUPER-HARD ADVANCED) system: "Character Creation". You can create your own char. Choose your gender, race, hair (I'm on this stage right now), eyes, mouth, everything! It's really hard! If you want me to show you, add me: YoungishSquido.2011-08-28 13:02:00

No! Abandoning them is like walking out of a door of oppurtunity, you feel bad afterwards. My tip is to boost yourself full of happiness, and then finish the level quickly. Once it's done, you feel satisfied, and then you can polish and varnish it! Hope this helps!2011-08-28 14:26:00

Uhm... we can already do that. It's that little sackboy in your popit.

And in answer to the thread title: no. I have a lot of unfinished levels. I'm hoping to finish one soon, but it's hard to stay focused.

My Moon is full of random level bits and bobs.
I have a super hard time staying forced and fall asleep
with the controller in my hands a lot. Some reason creating makes me sleepy :S
*mew

But I been doing little better lately with getting more of my levels close to done-ish...

I know we can already do that. I just want to make it as a system. Wow, if I didn't know that the little sackboy in our popit was the "character creation", I was even worse than a noob...
