Who actually looks at community objects?

Archive: 24 posts

When you pick up a community object do you actually ever look at it? With the amount of crap I pick up I just leave it there to pile up. Have you ever used any of it in your levels?2008-12-20 13:15:00

Well, a lot of it is terrible. But... there are some good things out there as well. People do produce levels that have high quality objects as rewards.

An example would be the "hand outs" I make for the "How to" series. I try and take everything I've shown in the lesson and condense it down into an object that demonstrates the principle clearly. That way they can fiddle with what they've seen and learnt in their own create mode.

Other people make interesting switch systems, timers, talking tools, all sorts of interesting bits and pieces.

And you never know when you might take someone else's objects and reverse engine it to make something that works well in your own level.

But yeah... a lot of it is drivel, useless or stuff I don't need or already own.

It's especially bad when it fits those categories and was something that was not in the level I just played.

I often find avoiding picking up objects adds a new layer of challenge to some levels.....

I do it as well when I'm playing really bad levels.

Off-Topic: I noticed that you're putting your sig in your messages. You add a sig by going into the UserCP at the top of the page.

There has only been one user-made object I have made use of: The Maraz Talking Tool. I give credit to this guy in my Level Showcase and posted info on his level elsewhere in the forums (can't quite remember where lol). Without his tool it would not have been possible to create such a story-rich level as the Legion. Well, it would have been but I would have had to create my own talking tool. Who knows how long that would of taken and I doubt it would be as efficient as the one he constructed.2008-12-20 14:14:00

The only things I ever keep have to be scenic, like trees. The rest is either terrible or is part of their storyline, so we cannot use it. I just wish that people would spend a little more time on community objects, so that we would want to keep them.

Most of the time we just get a frilly little pink button off a Silent Hill level.

I don't really. And I'd love some option to delete all objects. Not having to go through every single one and delete them. At least a very quick checklist where you can check them off one by one and delete the ones you want. Also for your own creations I would love to be able to sort the stuff by the project I'm working on. If I have created stuff for Level A I want a subfolder named Level A items.2008-12-20 16:44:00

I have about 10 copies of those lethal gas bats from the Darkness story level from people adding them to their levels as prizes...2008-12-20 17:18:00

There is the odd useful object but it gets lost in a sea of mediocrity.2008-12-20 18:47:00

Especially annoying when you delete one you actually wanted when you're quickly deleting a bunch because of the profile space issue!

But objects should have a rating system too. Automatically delete the 1-star objects when the profile starts filling up - at this rate it would take a year to fill up the profile with 5-star worthy objects.

most of them are crap, but i do look through them, check them out, and delete most. but some are indeed useful. if i never use one directly in my level, i have learned some great things from some.

The talking tool was mentioned in this thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5951).

The prizes I'll incorporate in my levels are big, more complex and interesting contraptions. Basically things that took me a couple of hours at least to make, in all their glory. Don't know if anyone will actually use them, but this way they at least have the possibility to check out how some of the things have been built in create mode instead of just looking at them in play mode. The prize bubbles are more of a way for me to showcase parts of the level with better detail, as some of the prizes take more than 2 max zoomed out screens to place.2008-12-21 12:35:00

So what we want is a long easy checklist of our stuff. When we highlight one we see a larger icon of what it is. For easy deleting. Or Automatic deletion unless we place it in our "cool community creations" bag.2008-12-21 13:03:00

I REALLY hate community objects in general. 99.4% of them are crap. and they take up too much space in your profile. usually I try to avoid all prize bubbles actually in a level, and as soon as I get to the end of a level I return to pod before there is a chance to receive prizes, I wish there was an option to turn off receiving prizes. I dont like to use them in my levels either, it seems cheap, unless its some behind the scenes thing, I dont like to steal peoples creations.2008-12-21 16:27:00

I generally look at them before they inevitably get deleted. There have been some interesting things, but it has been mostly crap.2008-12-21 19:46:00

When I play a level, I try to avoid as many prize bubbles as possible, unless the level is not totally awesome or the thing in the bubble looks intrestring. That has not happened until now though. I deleted every single object I collected, but I'll usually look at mechanism-like objects to see if they're any good before deleting them.
I think prize bubbles should always be optional and they should not give 50 points. That's why I will always put my prize bubbles into chests or something like that, to give the player a choice between collecting or not. Would be nice if everyone did that.

I do. To decide if I delete them or not. If I think I may find use for it later, it stays.2008-12-21 22:25:00

I don't really look myself. I tend to want to make everything up in my levels (except perhaps characters, I'm terrible at making characters). I think of the Community Objects more as souvenirs than as things I would actually use.

Myself, I actually find it harder and harder to find something worthwhile to give in my levels. I've actually reverse-engineered some prizes by taking parts from my level and turning them into prizes.

I'll always give away the bosses I make though, but somehow I doubt people would actually use them.

They should add community objects to a queue from which you could select what gets saved and what gets trashed. The queue should be cleared automatically every couple of days, or maybe even every play session...

They should also give you the option to auto-trash all "some kind of object" objects.
If they didn't bother naming it, then I won't bother looking at it.
