In anticipation of the big TES 5, I have been playing though Oblivion again for the first time in years... Wow. This game is a gem. I have not yet encountered an RPG I liked so much (Yes, Macnme, I have played Morrowind...) and it just never ceases to wow me at every corner. The art design is pitch perfect. I love how the look fits the setting unlike just about any other game I have played. I really feel a part of this world Man, I hope Skyrim is half as engaging as this.

What about you? What did you think of Oblivion? Like it? Hate it? Big Morrowind fan? Wish it were like Daggerfall? post here!

I despise oblivion. It doesn't tell me what to do, and the objectives often dissappear and you have to restart. the character creator is pointless because no matter how long you spend with it, you always end up looking the same as the base character and random hooded men appear at your bedside every time you try to sleep.2011-08-16 10:33:00

Someone obviously hasn't spent enough time with it.

Although I keep meaning to buy Morrowind and Oblivion + Shivering Isles on Steam so I can mod them, mainly to use 'Morroblivion', or whatever the mod is called that puts the Morrowind game into Oblivions game engine...

That would be awesome.

I also heard about a Mod for Morrowind that added things like Radiant AI, Random Quests and Encounters etc.
It also added an "Economy" where NPCs would be out in the landscape around the towns, harvesting monsters and materials and bringing them back to the shop - who's prices then adjusted based on availablity in the towns.
So you could become a skins trader for instance - harvesting animals in one section and transporting them to another.

Of course, this would only really worked because Morrowind doesn't have a stupid game-breaking "Fast Travel/GPS" system. You had to either know where you were going, or ask people for directions. You could only "Fast Travel" if there was a means to "Fast Travel" such as a boat or a stilt-walker (or certain teleportation spells);

Man, how much better was Morrowind compared to Oblivion?

I hope Skyrim admits to the mistakes of Oblivion, rather than carry them on.

I may just buy them on Steam and try all these mods out. I have them on Xbox, but mods... <3 There is a really awesome looking mod for Oblvion I saw somewhere but it isn't out yet. It was a complete overhaul, looked amazing though.

I'll try to find the link.

I plan on purchasing Oblivion but it's not in stores and I can only purchase it online, as it came out so close to launch. This game has been on the top of my list for a long time, but will most likely have to wait even longer once I purchase BF3.

Between BF3, Skyrim, Oblivion and Bioshock:Infinite, I'm going to have to stagger those purchases out over the next couple years. :/

I've heard tons of great things about Oblivion, though. Does the engine look fresh, or does it look like a lot of early releases for PS3 that happened to be ports of PC games (i.e. a bit clunky?)

The engine is looking a bit dated in my opinion.
Not that I put much store in graphics anyway - for all I bad mouth Oblivion, it's still far & away one of the best (probably THE best) RPGs on the current consoles. Certainly in the fantasy setting (as Fallout 3 probably tops it in the RPG stakes - but then, they are both made on the same engine)

The combat is clunky, the magic is flawed, the game suffers from freezes/glitches. It's still a MUST PLAY though - if you've got a spare 100+ hours

There was just a nice re-release in a decorative tin case with a making-of bluray. It is really nice. That is the edition I am currently running my campaign on. It includes shivering isles for FREE!

Wasn't that a limited edition release? Like 3,000 copies or something?

Also, I believe the GOTY edition comes with all PS3 DLC, no?

I bought every expansion for the Xbox (even the ridiculous Horse Armour!); And I haven't even played through them all yet

In fact - I bought the Xbox 360 purely to play Oblivion... that was it's primary purpose.

Of course, I'm now on my 7th Xbox (no joke) - so my Original Character is long gone - plus, there isn't really the drive to do multiple playthroughs - as there was with Morrowind.
Morrowind cut off certain missions if you completed certain other missions. If you joined one clan, then the other clans wouldn't let you join - because you were a member of a different clan. Or you couldn't become the Head of the Fighters Guild without actually knowing "how to fight", or be Head of the Mages Guild without knowing "How to use Magic" - basic BASIC role-playing mechanics - but immensely effective for giving you the feel of "playing a role". It didn't matter how many missions you had completed for them - if your magic wasn't above a certain level, then you couldn't progress.

Not EVERYTHING was accessible by EVERY character - as it was in Oblivion.

This is why Oblivion is less of a Role-Playing-Game than Morrowind IMHO

I played Morrowind so much that I was able to decipher the Dwarven Runes (was basically a symbolic alphabet without a T or an H) and actually read Dwarvish text- and documented my own Alchemic Chart (this when Internet access was limited and game sites giving away ALL the secrets weren't common place )

I'm expecting to become fluent in Dragon Tongue by the end of Skyrim

Oblivion is flawed as hell in so many ways I couldn't even list them here, but I love it regardless. Huge open world games (WITHOUT guns and mindless killing) as immersive as Oblivion are hard to come by.2011-08-16 17:41:00

I'm not to keen on Fast Travel, I much prefer exploring the landscape on my way to continue my objective.
Although at times, you really cannot be bothered to walk somewhere, so I think Fast Travel should be an option, but as Macnme says, it should require certain skills, or the use of a boat etc. to do.

I just asked Game Stop guy... Yes. Limited Ed... But guess what... There is silver lining here... Namely that I bought it at Wal-Mart for $20 because of a clerical error. I love games illiterate places that stock sweet **** like this should have been marked as $60... I got it for $40 off because of some ******* restocker! woot

You can pick Oblivion up for buttons nowadays - GOTY Platinum is cheap as chips.

someone hasn't played it long enough
I would have played it longer if it told me what I'm s'posed to do!!!! the quest book says to follow some blokes instructions but he just gives me all his clothes then tells me his army will rise from the ashes soon, I mean seriously, what the hell?!?
also why bother putting a character creator into an offline first person game? you can't even see yourself!
The game is too glitchy too play for extended periods of time as well, so I really dont think it deserves the credit it gets when actually good rpgs such as valkyria chronicles are completly unheard of.
just my opinion of this terrible game. I'm sure some of you enjoy it and I wont argue with you over it any longer, because I don't believe this game is worth it.

Lol wut. This game is so simple in terms of an actual RPG. I would consider it a hack and slash if it werent for all the stats and customization. Get quest. Kill thing. Turn in quest. That is the mechanic. You DO have to read tho, to understand some parts... You CAN read, can't you?

Yep, definitely haven't played it for long enough. You can't play it for long periods of time due to glitches? I never had that problem, nor did many other people.

Lol, if you play it, and deal with a few glitches and freezing, it can really turn out to be an amazing game Just play it a little longer, after you get into the game it gets more fun.
Like Fallout 3, it had so many glitches, so what? It was an awesome game anyways. The games that this company makes are so awesome, it really makes up for the glitches
I really can't wait for Skyrim. I heard that they're supposed to be using a new engine to run it on that'll reduce Lag/Glitching/Freezing And overall, what I've seen, it's a REALLY amazing game

Yeah, haha.
But Bethesda is a really good company meh thinks Because they look over their mistakes with the last game and improve things with the next game, and they take a LONG time with their games to make it as awesome as possible, they don't release one every year and has 2 different companies making one to have one every year (Looks at Activision )

Yeah. I like when a company really takes it's time and really makes something to be proud of, rather than turning out a passable, but cheap product. Just wait. I have a feeling Fallout 4 will be very similar to Skyrim. and both will be gems2011-08-17 12:33:00

I thought Oblivion was just an alright game. I still think Morrowind is leagues better. In Oblivion, I don't like the whole random loot idea. It ruins the whole point of what makes Elder Scrolls games fun. In Morrowind, I enjoy exploring the countryside and running across a cool cave with rare loot in it. In Oblivion, the loot is all randomized which ruins the fun of exploration (you are just as lucky to find a rare epic item in a town as you would in a random cave. Plus, Bandits will have some of the best armor and weapons in the game at later levels.).2011-08-17 14:31:00

Yeah, I think I'll just resign myself to getting Skyrim, since it's 4x the size of Oblivion and just as deep. It also seems (from what I've read) that the UI and other elements are more streamlined and minimalist. Less inventory management and character sheet interaction and more visual implementation of those traditional RPG features...

Still on the fence though... is it worth keeping a leg on the other side? I mean the only big pro I can think of is that I'd have all DLC up front.

Well, I'm really excited for Skyrim, I think it's gonna be better than Oblivon & Fallout

The pros of oblivion (goty ps3)
-Cheap ($15-$30 new/used)
-Comes with 2 exp. packs
-Larger map than Skyrim
-Mage's guild storyline is the bomb
-A solid RPG that stands up well even after 5 years
-Multidimensional warfare
-A fantastic way to get refreshed on the story lines before Skyrim (the storyline of TES: Arena is fully chronicled)

Cons
-Ugly character faces
-Low resolution textures on stonework
-Steep difficulty
-Fewer RPG elements than Morrowind or Daggerfall
-Quick travel can take you away from the experience
-No trophy support... Wait, why is that in cons?

There are your pros and cons. Now go buy Oblivion.
