Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Archive: 19 posts

Did anyone else see this movie? I recommend you do. It's truly awesome. And see it in theaters. Yeah.

I've seen some movie critics seem to think it's about "the evils of animal testing", but I really don't think it's anything about that. To me it's more about if humanity deserves to live... or something. Kinda what I hoped Caprica would be, only with Apes instead of Robots.

Ah well. Anyway, see it if you haven't, and if you have, what did you think?

On a completely unrelated note, I'm now a college student. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I saw it. It was surprisingly good. I thought it would have been mediocre, but I actually thought it was one of the best movies this year.

People keep telling me to watch that movie...but it has primates!!! NOOOO! I hate all primates -__- Except lemurs....they're awesome! Oh and humans too because we're also primates....I think. I guess I'll go watch it though since "it's soooooo good" :|2011-08-19 21:25:00

It is the best of the year. Best of the series as well. I hope they continue the new rebooted series in this manner. It is dark and some what cynical, and treats the subject with more grace and poise than is humanly possible.2011-08-19 21:40:00

It was rather good, better than i expected it to be. Imo it does seem to have a vaguely sinister feeling, especially towards the end. It might be about how the producers think animals will evolve to become more intelligent, but I'm not sure.

The end kind of freaked me out a little too, but that'll never happen. *Teaser*

Oh well, I thought it was completely cheesy and cliched, quite a few unintentional laughs at the cinema I was in. James Franco is great as always though.2011-08-19 23:39:00

I saw it too, it was awesome. Totally not some random summer blockbuster without substance capitalizing on 3D (coff coff Transformers 3). By watching the trailer I thought it would end up average, because the "thing that can cure a problematic disease ends up ruining humanity" clich? is so overused. But it turned out well. The scenes with Caesar (the leader ape) completely steal the show, they're easily the best thing in, and the ape is definitely the most relatable character in the whole movie.2011-08-20 01:24:00

Awesome movie, (on a completely unrelated note: Why you no recognise "movie" as a word Google Chrome? WHY?) the actual quality of the film shone through despite the actual cinema which I saw it in being sh*t. Seriously, at a rough estimate, it was running on a 100" screen with 20 fps in 240p. I laughed when Tom Felton said "Get your stinking paws of me you dirty ape!" and the motion capture of Ceasar was sublime. When the apes were up the tree near the very end, I was raging at the fact that everyone was still alive, a minute later I was pleasantly shocked by the fact that they'd managed to kill 7 billion people in the space of 60 seconds. It's like saying that you want a Ferrari for Christmas and you step outside ten minutes later and it's right in front of your eyes... Well, not quite. 2011-08-20 02:38:00

WARNING: REST OF THREAD CONTAINS SPOILERS, YOU PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN ET YO

I was kinda upset over the "no extermination of the human race"... I WOULD have liked to see humanity die. But really, thinking back, it just wouldn't fit. This story wasn't really about apes rising and destroying humanity. It was more about looking into ourselves and seeing if we are worthy of survival. Which I think a lot of people forget about or don't understand. It's not saying "Don't give the apes intelligence, they'll kill you"... It's more, I felt, WHY should humanity survive? I'm not saying we have to all die off, but if we just take existence for granted, and then become content with our life without realizing why we SHOULD live... I unno, I'm going off on a tangent, but look at Jacobs, the CEO of that brain company. He was motivated by profits. Which a lot of the world is, not just the CEOs but, well, everyone. I know in OUR world apes are not seen as people, but, I guess what I'm saying is... Humanity is flawed. But if we just accept our status as above others, whether it be apes or, say, Ethiopians, to pick a random starving country... and we don't try to ask ourselves why we SHOULD live, and act in a way that proves why we should live... Then, well, why should we?

I was tempted to link to a video of the speech Adama gives in the Battlestar Galactica opening miniseries, but unfortunately I can't find it online. Basically it's just saying that humanity should prove why it should live instead of just assuming that we should live.

Now, where I was going with that... If, hypothetically speaking, we WERE to gives apes or robots super intelligence, and then we realized what we did and tried to wipe them out, as has been so often repeated in scifi... Well, why SHOULD humanity win?

Obviously we do not want to die. However, a mere self-focused mindset of survival does not answer the question of SHOULD we survive. What I like was that the apes in this movie weren't really out for blood. From what I understand of the movie this was a remake of, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, Caesar was out for blood. It was so bloody that the original cut was rated X and they had to tone it down. But in that universe, the victory of apekind was done in blood.

In this world, I like that Caesar didn't WANT to rule the world. HE really just wanted a place for himself to live and feel like he belongs. He didn't plan for the virus to wipe out humanity, and he seemed averse to killing anyone as he went to the Forest. Now, going back to what I said before, the humans in this are shown to be driven by greed mostly. Personally, thinking back I suppose I could have done with a bit more vilification of humanity, but as it is it seems fairly "Real" I suppose. Humanity was shown to be driven by selfish greed, apes by wanting to not be tested on or humiliated.

Ok, this is really longer then I was planning, so I'll just cut it here. This movie was more about asking why we should thrive then anything else. If we keep up this greed, then we may thrive... the question is, should we? Should we thrive when we are so driven by greed and complacent with our place at the top? Or should we recognize our humanity and try to help others just out of basic empathy?

And woo, rant's over. That's what I thought this was about. Kbai.

I haven't seen it yet (not reading post above) but from what I've heard it's a pretty good movie. I was incredibly nervous for it when I heard it was another Planet of the Apes remake, and the awkward titling of the movie didn't help.2011-08-20 04:48:00

There are moments that really gratifying, and really steals the show with Sezer development through out the film. The journey takes Sezer linking really feel his ordeal. With moments of heart and thought and action, and really hits the high mark to the public they are aiming for.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was spelled "Caesar", like the emperor.

Haven't seen it yet - but it can't be any worse than the Planet of The Apes remake.... that was DREADFUL!

I nearly put my fist through the screen when they came out with the line "Get your hands of me you d@mn dirty HUMAN!" ;
Seriously - who-ever thought of including that line needs to be ground down into Torgo's Executive Powder!

I trust Torgo's for all my delousing and bomb disposal needs... That being said, the ORIGINAL line is in this new movie, but it is put in more carefully.

Apart from that darn harry potter guy, cool movie imo.
When Caesar did that thing... you know. That was seriously great.
I'm just so glad the movie didn't suck.

I've now seen all 7 of the Planet of the Apes films and this is probably my second favourite

In conquest, it starts off set in the future, where apes have been turned into slaves. Caesar's conquest is done mostly for revenge on the humans, as well as to give apes equal rights (in the following film he becomes far more of a pacifist, but that's not really the point). In Rise Of, he specifically doesn't want to kill any humans, and only hurts those that gets in his way. I think that the way it was done in Rise Of was much more meaningful and interesting.

WARNING: TOTAL NERD-OUT FOLLOWING
I so hope that the evil acting ape (the one that becomes the main test subject the second time round) comes back in the next film as Aldo! I bet no one understands the significance of this XD
