So is GTAIII (I being one of them).

Steroids. Check.

You want jets? Check.

You want to be able to call in air strikes on rival gangs? Check.

Airstrikes... wait, this is sounding a lot like Call of Duty now.

You want to beat people senseless with something big, long and purple usually used for something else? Check.

....

Um... a *****?

[Trailer that looks like something TF2 would have released.]

I'm not interested. I think they're try-harding to make it look like a GTA game. I still enjoy GTAIII, so I'm not going to bother with this. Also, anybody else noticed the car falling randomly near the plane at 1:35? I call hax!

Yeah I love GTA III but I loved SA more. By definition they can't both be widely considered the best GTA and having observed various message boards over the years SA definitely seems to be the most popular of the bunch.

Almost every game (movie, book, tv show etc) is a derivative of things that came before it. I agree that this has a very similar look to GTA but the overall style has done enough to set itself apart imo. If your still enjoying GTA III does that mean you did not buy any other GTA game since then? lol, don't really understand the logic there but OK.

EDIT: New feature on GTTV

I also own GTA: Vice City, GTA: SA, and GTA IV. None of them, however, are as fun as GTA III. I once in a while get bored, so when I feel like playing GTA, I choose III majority of the time. It's just better IMO.

I figured you played the other GTA's, was actually a bit of a rhetorical question since you used the GTA III example as one of the reasons you would not pick up this game. In regards to "fun" it would seem people have wildly different definitions of the word. When it comes to open-world sand-box style games specifically, I think the more tools you have to cause chaos, destruction, improvisation and general insanity the more "fun" they are, but that's just me

Having said that this will NOT be a day 1 purchase simply because I will be busy playing BF3, UC3 and the all-consuming titan known as Skyrim.

My favorite was vice city. S.A came a close second i do have all other GTA's even China Town. GTA 4 was rubbish you couldn't do anything so i bought Saints Row 2 to see if it could offer me a better experience. Overall GTA 4 did have a good story but Saints 2 had the fun crazy gameplay, customisation, and everything else GTA 4 failed to give me.

With all the different GTA's that have come out over the years we have had many great experiences and most people played them to just go crazy on the city. I don't know anyone who ever actually finished a GTA other than GTA 3 and Vice city as they were too busy having fun trashing the cities and killing people in extreme and fun ways. Saints row the third looks like it will give me that extreme gameplay i'm waiting for with new and exciting features that i have always wished i could do in any of the GTA's.

I remember in S.A i stole the jump and flew it into the third island before i had even unlocked the 2nd island that to me was amazing as i ran from the military and had a massive shootout at the old abandoned airport. Thats where GTA 4 failed to deliver. There was no fun at all other than the standard missions.

"Having said that this will NOT be a day 1 purchase simply because I will be busy playing BF3, UC3 and the all-consuming titan known as Skyrim. "
So true. With games like BF3, Saints Row 3 and Skyrim how will we ever find the time to go to work.

New IGN preview, sounds...insane.

After playing an hour of Saints Row: The Third, we're about ready to call it the most insane game of the year. And we haven't even played any story missions, yet. We just spent 60 minutes tearing around the fictional city of Steelport, causing as much mayhem and mischief as we could. And we had a blast.

Saints Row: The Third has incentivized f^@$ing around. Everyone loves messing with NPCs, causing destruction, and seeing how high they can get their wanted levels in sandbox games. But here, not only is that stuff good fun, but pretty much everything you do earns you respect points that can be used to upgrade your character.

Here are five of the craziest things we've done so far.

Get an interracial sex change.

Saints Row: The Third lets you customize your character to your own specifically perverted liking. We started out playing as a white dude. Boring, right? So we stopped by the plastic surgeon and before we knew it we were a hot Asian girl. Next, we cranked up our sex appeal until our boobs would give us serious back problems. In order to get the full benefit of our assets, we made our character topless (although the boobs will appear highly pixilated while running around the game). We added a cheerleader miniskirt and, the piece de resistance, a giant wolf head mask.

So our character was a hot Asian girl with huge boobs running around in just a short miniskirt and a wolf mask. Many boyhood fantasies were fulfilled.

The character customization goes much deeper than this example. You can set an age, give yourself blemishes and scars, and even select a voice. Want to be a she-hulk or a 90-year old crack whore zombie? The only limit is your effed up imagination.

Call in an airstrike on...anyone.

Like most open-world games, cause too much trouble and the police will be on your back. A group of squad cars will likely create a road block and the officers will be firing at you from behind their vehicles. But not to worry if you have the airstrike in your arsenal. Simply aim, select your target, and wait a moment while hellfire is rained down upon your enemies. Then you're free to make a clean getaway.

The airstrike is also effective against gang members, old people getting in your way, hippies...pretty much anyone.

Another delightful tool in your inventory is the Reaper Drone, which lets you pilot missiles while you hide from a safe distance.

Play in traffic.

Saints Row: The Third has Insurance Fraud missions, which give you a limited amount of time to cause a certain amount of damage to your own body. We would find a busy intersection and just lay down in the middle, letting tons and tons of metal do their worst to our fleshy frame. Not only is it quite enjoyable to watch yourself be grounded into the cement by a semi truck, but you also earn valuable respect points. Because you're obviously a psychopath, and no one wants to f^@$ with you.

Suck and spit with your Manapult.

The Manapult is a fantastic invention. Part vehicle, part man cannon, anyone you drive over will be sucked into its chamber. They can then be shot out at your leisure and sent splattering all over the walls of Steelport.

Shoot people with mind-controlling, exploding octopi.

The Genki Cannon fires an octopus that will attach to its victim and turn them into mindless, wandering drones. When you feel like it, you can detonate the octopus and take out anything within a small radius.

People who love GTA > 'SR sucks, it's just trying to copy my beloved GTA!'

People who love SR > ' SR is everything GTA used to be, before it got all serious and boring. SR is far better!'

Everyone else > 'I'll just play Skyrim...'

I love GTA III-San Andreas... But Saints Row is a mediocre product that will never live up to the fun GTA name. Let GTA get better, stop trying to imitate. Also, Skyrim is gon be the bomb2011-08-16 02:00:00

That is exactly what GTA fans say. I enjoy both games, because I don't compare them all the time. SR is just hilarious fun, it's not meant to be taken seriously. Unfortunatley, GTA is trying to be serious now, which is a pity.2011-08-16 02:57:00

I just don't like the childish humor in SR. It isn't the same as the old GTA games. They had personality. This has... The humor of a 12 year old boy.2011-08-16 03:03:00

And every-so-often, we all need to play a hilariously childish game. Games are for fun, and while I love nothing more than a realistic race sim (iRacing, rFactor, Forza etc.) or a realistic FPS (I still haven't found anything more intense than advancing up a crater-filled hill, with machine gune fire all around you, while artillery shells fall everywhere, and you know all it takes is one bullet to kill you, and that if the artillery hits you, you'll see your body in pieces. Red Orchestra is amazing, but I digress.) and yet a game like SR is a fantastic change of pace.2011-08-16 03:39:00

It has (blank) movie syndrome... Like disaster movie, super hero movie, etc. Those movies were terrib;e... Because they werent funny. Saints Row isn't funny. GTA isnt funny (anymore) the difference? Saints Row is trying to be funny. But it falls flat on every single joke. It is annoying, unfunny, and obnoxious. The developers are unprofessional sounding when talking about how "cool" it is. It is unfunny, and I don't see how the first one got a sequel in the first place... Oh wait. It is from children. And children spew money. Yes. Children. This is not a game for adults. Don't let the M rating fool you... There is nothing Mature about this one.2011-08-16 03:52:00

You just don't get it at all, do you? You're acting like you are above the game. There isn't meant to be anything mature about the game - that's the point. It is just fun, and nothing else.

But it's pointless arguing with you about it - you're clearly far too mature to just have fun.

I fully admit it is profitable. And I like the character customization in it. I just wish it didn't try to have such a street attitude... Feels less Ice Cube and more Vanilla Ice.2011-08-16 13:13:00

Saints Row: The Third has dropped the street atitude, the developer said that there will be no more bandanas and doo rags and such, just T-Shirts costumes and more of a City atitude since they have gone to Steelport.

After reading this new preview I am having second thoughts about the game, it just doesn't sound mindless, silly and chaotic enough...

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Videogames are way too serious. Don't get me wrong. Serious games can be fun. What I'm mostly agitated by is the state of gaming where not a lot of crazy outrageous games are being produced. Remember Conker's Bad Fur Day? Armed and Dangerous? They were stupid, but in the "this is so stupid that it's fun" kind of way.

While there are at least a few games that fall under the "stupid fun" category (as I like to refer to it) coming out this year, the one that easily stands above the rest is Saints Row: The Third. We've seen the game a few times now, but THQ finally let us get some hands-on time to just do a bunch of stupid sh*t all around the city of Steelport.

The first thing that we checked out was the new vehicle handling mechanics. You remember in Grand Theft Auto IV how driving a vehicle for the very first time felt really weird? In Saints Row, it just feels perfect right off the bat. There's no learning curve and you're able to do sick turns and stuff like you're a pro right from the start.

While driving, you can shoot your guns and throw out grenades. The GPS system has been overhauled and displays visual indicators right in the game world so you can focus on the world in front of you instead of looking back and forth to the mini-map. The GPS also automatically adjust its direction in-case you've missed a turn.

The 50 plus vehicles in the world can all be customized to your hearts content at the car shop, humorously named, "Rimjob." You can strengthen your body and tires to make your ride more resilient, increase the vehicles speed, adjust vanity aspects such as the paint job and add stupid things like an underglow. Best of all, all the vehicles you create will be automatically saved at your garage so you don't have to worry about losing your ride after it gets totaled.

On top of the regular cars, you'll have special vehicles like tanks and jets. Then there are the insane vehicles like the Johnny Gat mobile that shoots out fire from the front of the ride and the Professor Genki?s Super Ballistic Manapult that sucks up and shoots people out of a cannon. Retardedly awesome? YUP!

The absurdity of course doesn't just stop with the vehicles. The weapons themselves are just as outrageous. Expect your standard set of weapons like pistols, machine guns and the like, all of which are customizable. But why mess around with boring realistic guns when you can call in a go******** airstrike on an unsuspecting group instead? Not personal enough? Well how about getting a first person perspective as you remotely guide a missile fired from a predator drone flying above the city?

Other weapons will include boxing gloves that instantly blow up people, a giant floppy purple baseball bat and the Mollusk Launcher. The Mollusk Launcher is a weapon that shoots out Japanese talking octopuses that latch onto people and takes control of them so they will fight alongside you. You can also blow up the octopus while it's latched onto objects. Did I mention how stupidly fun this game is yet?

Oh yeah, there's also a whole nut shot system in place. Volition, a major videogame developer, spent God knows how many hours creating a ****ing system just dedicated to a variety of different ways you can destroy someone's crutch region. I love it.

One of the last things we did in our demo was create a monstrosity of a character. The main character is fully customizable, everything from his race, hair, nails, sex and voice. Saints Row: The Third takes the customizing feature up a notch by offering really stupid options. Basically, we ended up with an old overly fat guy that had completely gold skin, a skull face tattoo and the voice of a Brazilian woman. It was creepy as hell.

You can choose your clothing too, everything from normal outfits to full on furry suits. Or you can just run around naked. So imagine our golden creation running around pantsless as his giant **** is flopping around everywhere. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: You can adjust your characters sex appeal, which translate to either giving yourself a really giant penis or humungous breasts. The naughty bits are censored, but with that crappy distorted pixel effect so you can kind of make things out still. And of course, physics apply so you'll see your giant **** swinging around like a record (baby) or your breasts bouncing around like a kangaroo inside of a bounce house in outer space.

Before I was done with my preview time, I messed around with a side mission in Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax Show. It's basically Running Man meets a Japanese game show. You're thrown into a room and given a specific gun to shoot a bunch of targets and people in furry suits. Your health doesn't regenerate in these missions so you have to shoot signs that pop-up with health icons. Oh, and you can't shoot the signs with pandas on it because it's unethical. I don't know.

You have a target goal and time limit to complete Professor Genki's obstacle course. Succeed and get some money and your respect level increases. Respect now applies to your characters progression system, so the more respect you earn, the more stuff you can upgrade such as your health, skills, gang abilities and so forth.

If you haven't picked up on it by now, Saints Row: The Third offers you a lot of customizing features for just about everything. And all these lends to what I seriously consider one of the funnest games I've ever played. Every five minutes, something in Saints Row: The Third made all of us watching in the room laugh out loud. Volition wants you to have fun every possible second and that's exactly what I experienced during my hour with the game.

I didn't even play a single storyline mission, but if videos like these are any indication, then I'm sure it'll be a blast.

And finally legendary designer Itagaki will be playable in SR3 *claps*

Japanese dev icon Tomonobu Itagaki is a playable character in Saints Row: The Third, publisher THQ has confirmed.

According to Gamespot, he'll be a preloaded option in the game's character creation feature, complete with trademark leather jacket and sunnies.

The former Team Ninja boss is currently working on action title Devil's Third for THQ at his new Valhalla Games Studios start-up.

I'm dead looking forward to this game - and have been ever since it was announced! Loved all the games released beforehand, and the pure silliness! I read some comments above saying how it was an immature game, and people comparing it to other games - but I really don't think this series can really be compared to any other game, as it's a genre in it's own right. I mean, there's a loose storyline for those who are interested, but I purely loved the ability in the previous games to... well, do whatever you wanted, look however you wanted, drive whatever you wanted etc.

Looking forward to this one - pre-ordering for me!

^I love that trailer. I've always wanted a futuristic GTA game and I'm liking all the high tech stuff in the new Saints Row. This will likely be tied with LBP2 as my favorite game of the year. I just really wish they would add a "play, create, share" aspect to the game. I think the world of Saints Row is perfect for that type of thing. I'm not asking to create environments or anything like that, just the ability to create our own missions and it would be so cool to create our own characters/enemies/peds/gangs with the character creator. I really think they could make the popularity of this series skyrocket if they did that.2011-10-20 21:37:00

Surprised this thread isn't more popular considering how hard this game ROCKS!

Had a whole night of me and my mate playing the co-op. The co-op is just the whole game - exactly like the single player only twice the fun. Had so many moments of total random hilarity. And some of the missions are just completely over-the-top in the best possible way.

It reminds me of the old grand theft auto - before it started taking itself too seriously.
Saints Row takes nothing seriously - but some of the missions are seriously hard

Anyway, I've been looking into this game. Seems a nice pick to let go of the realness of GTA. Don't get me wrong, I like GTA and SR. One is like BF3, realistic, while the other is like CoD, the perfect game to play when you just want to watch the world burn.

I'm partially ambidextrous, and do many things differently than other people, like writing with right, cutting with left and turning the spoon in the coffee clockwise...and I need Inverted in world roaming and aiming with normal.
That's what gave me most problem playing with Red Dead and made me gave up.
And I could play only an hour of this before raging.
But the game is great and was loving it.

Hoping for a patch, this game WAS the most fun I have had all year, absolutely ridiculous in the best possible way. Nothing like playing as a toilet in a TRON-esque world...2011-11-26 17:53:00

Sure, but note from the PS blog announcement (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/11/16/scea-and-thq-announce-additional-content-for-saints-row-the-third-owners-on-playstation-3/)...

The offer expires at midnight on February 13, 2012, so be sure to redeem your online pass before then.
