Girl's Room 2: Puzzle Paints

Like the title says!

I have had a blast creating these puzzles over the past few weeks, using a custom blend of paint logic and crazy let's-destroy-everything attitude. It ended up becoming a complete level!

Please note this is NOT a remake of Portal 2. It's inspired by the physics and art design. I hope you will find it familiar but fresh, and I know you will find it challenging. Really didn't pull any punches. ALL puzzles can be solved by ONE player, and ALL destruction and resulting mishaps are by design. It's a bit buggy in multi player, but that just adds to the fun. It should be IMPOSSIBLE to get truly stuck in an area... the only limitation is your approach to the puzzles!

Please enjoy, and thank you for playing.

DETAILS:
Genre: Puzzle/Platformer (co-op)

Thanks!

I can't stress enough how much fun this was to create.

I've gotten a rash of Cool Pages plays which has yielded a few extra Boos by people looking for a quick giggle, which this is not. It's a full, robust giggle. However they impressed on me a need to create a hint system, or otherwise drastically reduce the difficulty of the level to accommodate casual, non-puzzle fans. I think it works!

Got some new photos and spoilers below! (Don't worry, they're just a fraction of the level.)

Now you can sticker under the RED BUTTON for any paint-related puzzle, and it'll give you helpful clues!

There are many ways to "beat" the level, but the fastest legit way is these five rooms. Of course you can already see there's stuff happening overhead... and in fact, in all directions outside this screenshot! Simply solving the puzzles is fun, but once you do, try making this run in less than 200 seconds (about 3 minutes) to receive bonus points and clues to escape for real! Can you do it?

Not all paths are obvious, even with hints. If the level starts to break, keep breaking it! Looks like there's a way out of this room... but who can resist a button with a skull on it? What could go wrong? Let's push it just this once...

Ah, of course. (But not really a death trap... just a drop into the waterworks!)

And just because it looks cool, here's one last image...

Queued as it does look really good fun, and I love these puzzle type levels. I'm a little confused by the name though? Seems totally random and completely unrelated to the actual level? I haven't played it of course, the thing that attracted me to it was the description in the image in your sig.2011-08-15 13:52:00

A long explanation of the title, preceded by this short one:

It utilizes the paint effects of Portal 2... not the portals. It'll be more clear after you've played it (especially the subtitle "puzzle paints")... does this mean you haven't played Portal 2?

"Girl's Room" is the series, this is the second one, the storyline is established in the first one but is stylistically different. "Puzzle Paints" is the subtitle and actual level title, describing the paint bits.

I wanted to call it a Portal 2 parody of some sort at first... but that's more of a grab at plays, and again, this isn't really a remake of Portal 2... there are no portals, and also lacking other key features of that game such as light bridges, lasers and turrets. Of course I obviously built it on the ideas of the paints in Portal 2, which in turn were adapted from an indie game called Narbancular Drop, which is all about playing with physics by painting objects. But the purpose of the level creation is to continue the concept of Girl's Room, in which you are lost in a mysterious, endless purgatory... in the first Girl's Room your character destroys her room, and she punishes you with a violent smackdown. From then on it's all padded cells, bizarre conversations with a voice through a speaker, and improbably complex puzzles that she supposedly created... which, if you think about it, is impossible. Especially since there are references to the destruction of her bedroom built into the puzzles! How could she possible have that foresight? The truth is a cliche twist, which I enjoy playing with but not revealing (except in one secret area)...

Anyway, I created Girl's Room as a basic setup with the story and the first of many puzzles, so that I could make continuous puzzle sequels that break rules and change visual styles. It's a kind of laziness on my part, the bottom line is I like the puzzles and cheaply string them together by calling them sequels. This one was originally going to have more tributes to other games, including Silent Hill, Space Invaders and so forth, but I ran out of thermo and really loved the consistent Portal 2 look. I already have many rooms ready for Part 3 and Part 4, which are currently the themes of a Shopping Mall and Japan... which I will call Girl's Room 3 and 4... even though they won't reference anything from the first level, they're just more puzzles in limbo.

Anyway! Thank you so much for playing. I really wish you to enjoy it.

Currently working on a way to get a YouTube video to reveal all endings and easter eggs. There are many!!!

Thanks so much for playing! If you come back across this thread and want to know... SPOILERS...

The CAKE can be accessed from the first room... if you hit X at the right time while bouncing on blue paint, it will send you rocketing up high. Use it like a trampoline to get up past the ceiling... likewise in the third room, if you bounce high enough to the blue paint and go right, you can break through the tiles. Then go left back toward the first room!

The SPHERE (personality core) is in two places... one if you access the "true ending" at the top of the red elevator shaft, the other if you keep destroying the bounce pad in the 4th room... just grab and drag it into the green slime, after a few warnings you'll stop getting replacement bounce pads and the sphere will drop!

What an amazing level!!!
I can tell that you put in a lot of work and time into this level.
Of course i have to point out that what made me really want to play
was the poster-like advertisement in the OP. (I really like when people do that haha.)
Anyway your level was fun and challenging!
Good Job hope to see more levels from you soon <3

I really loved your level, Arbiekko!! I must've played it like... 15 times, and I think I've found every secret rooms! I've also found the cake and beaten the clock (without even taking the shortcut ), and I enjoyed it a lot. Just one thing puzzled me... What the "letter" says when you succed the time trial... I've actually found the elevator, used the blue paint to go up... But I merely ended up at the top of the fourth room and then ended up in the fifth room. Maybe I've missed something, but I thought I could actually get free somehow.2011-08-16 11:36:00

I'm in two minds about this. On one hand I found the paint based puzzles sublime, yet at other points I was utterly confused and disorientated.

I'll first address what I was getting at with the name earlier. It was more the Girl's Room part I had qualms about as, to be blunt, it's a bit bland and totally unrelated to the level, isn't it? I can't help but think the name isn't doing the level any favours. Key example is that I actually saw this thread in the forum yesterday and didn't click the link. Then I saw the advert in your sig and was surprised at what the level actually was. If in LBP, I wouldn't have played the level based off of the title.

I'll get the other negative out of the way while I'm at it. I was doing fine until I fell in the water. First time I got teleported somewhere when I got killed by the circular saw and was a bit confused, then second time I went right to get told it was a dead end, but the water was so murky I couldn't see where I was at all. I just didn't like the water sections, I'll be honest.

What I DID like though, were the paint puzzles, and honestly this may be why I was disappointed at the water parts as I wanted a whole level of these! The puzzles are very cleverly thought out and you have so much potential with this concept. Even with just blue and orange you had plenty of great ideas... just think what you could do with more colours and different properties! So yeah, like I say very enjoyable. I did have to use a hint in the second room mind because it really wasn't obvious you could grab onto the metal. Maybe a cue there to help out?

Anyway, I see what I've mostly written here seems negative. Erm, that said I've spied on your poster up there that there are more paint rooms I didn't see and I'm actually going to go back and play the level again later to see if I can access them, would I do this if I didn't enjoy the level? Of course not! I gave you a yay, I think my problem is that I was expecting 10 or so rooms involving paint puzzles, which I would have been more than content with haha.

You'll want to use a sticker on the red wall at the top of elevator shaft, above the button that dispenses the blue paint. It will take you to freedom! ☆☆☆

I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your comments! I've seen a few times where players hit the level between 10 and 15 times which is exactly the sort of gameplay I hoped to create. I'm so happy!

See Comment #12

Fair enough! It's encouraging that you wanted more paint puzzles. I kept it deliberately short, because while there are many challenges that can be done, once the player sorts out the basic rules it's more an endurance thing, not a true puzzle-solving one. And until they finish the level, there's no sense of how close to completion they are... which creates a fatigue and grumpiness. In testing, the third room was the "tipping point" for most players. They were solving okay, but I dare not try to make them endure another 7 or 8 rooms back to back... the water changeup is the natural result of complacent "push button = solve puzzle" thinking, and ONLY in that section is it possible to get caught in the murkiness and end the level. Whereas being a little more clever will reveal other paths... which in turn lead to more paint puzzles.

Thank you for your feedback!
