Publish now or wait for scoreboard?
Archive: 14 posts
I have a level that is ready for publishing. The issue is that I believe the appeal will be in the scoreboard and getting the high score. It's a standalone game similar to the flash games online. I think people would enjoy it, but the replay value would be in beating your previous score. Is it worth publishing now, or should I wait? | 2011-08-12 22:01:00 Author: tdarb Posts: 689 |
Just plublish it..... | 2011-08-12 22:12:00 Author: zzmorg82 Posts: 948 |
I would definitely wait for the return of the scoreboards. I think you'll likely still get the same plays you would have before, but to be honest, I'd definitely prefer a score-orientated level to actually have scores. Maybe if you'd finished sooner, and had ages left of scoreboard downtime, I'd say just publish it, but I do believe it's only a very short time till the Scoreboards are back. | 2011-08-12 22:43:00 Author: Ostler5000 Posts: 1017 |

that's cool. lol I guess that solves that. I thought MM said it would be a week or more on twitter the other day. When did they come back on? | 2011-08-12 23:51:00 Author: tdarb Posts: 689 |
Ooh, wasn't long ago at all, about 30 minutes ago at most? | 2011-08-12 23:55:00 Author: Vector-Espio-Fan Posts: 119 |
BTW, scoreboards are not up. Vector just mistook seeing her own score on the board as them working again. | 2011-08-13 08:27:00 Author: SSTAGG1 Posts: 1136 |
Publish now. If it doesn't do well, and you believe it was due to the lack if scores - delete the earth version and republish. It will be a good test to see if they are a factor or not for people playing certain kinds of levels. Consider it research. | 2011-08-14 00:18:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Well from what i have seen with a few score based levels published recently they just haven't been getting the plays they were before. A new level by Dortr and a couple others i know have had a lot less plays then they should have by now and i'm sure its because like myself people would rather play story based levels or watch movie levels at the moment as scores don't matter in those kind of levels. You may have noticed how many people are not playing multiplayer lately as well. I have heaps of movie levels and story based level in my queue and now is the time to play them. After all who will play and rate a level that requires you to score points to win or succeed if those scores will be worth nothing. I have Loverice's level still queued as well just waiting for the scoreboards to work again so i can beat my original score. I played it the day the scoreboards went down and came 6th on the score board after many attempts just to find it didn't save my score i was p*****. If i didn't really enjoy the level like i did i wouldn't even consider going back. So i'd say publish later. Maybe publish a small demo version now just to get people interested. After all some people will rate a level good or bad depending on how well they did. | 2011-08-14 01:14:00 Author: Lordwarblade Posts: 761 |
A nice idea would be to compensate high score earners for the lack of a leaderboard by giving out prizes at certain thresholds, a la tower of whoop | 2011-08-14 13:25:00 Author: Radishlord Posts: 706 |
well... I'd say polish now, and then publish in a week... If it's making you think twice; go back in and make sure everything is perfectly presented. I think a lot of people (including myself) publish things because they are happy with them but know of a few little issues that they want to get around to fixing but don't. If after a week you feel that there is nothing else to do but share your work then publish, but keep in mind that lots of things release dates are pushed back for plenty of reasons. So if you feel that scores would make your stage better, hold off. | 2011-08-14 13:38:00 Author: Mr_Fusion Posts: 1799 |
I wonder if placing a 3-second delay timer wired to a photo camera right as the player reaches the scoreboard (and a note telling players the photo will happen) will work? A technique I've seen people doing (and done myself) lately is to photograph their score while the scoreboard is displaying (gotta be quick!) and uploading that photo either in a replay or from the pod after. It's actually a rather nice way to do it... it shows an interest and is a welcome variation from the asinine "photo of myself all zoomed in" thing that narcissist players like to do. And it works just fine for keep track of a score! At least for now. | 2011-08-14 17:42:00 Author: Unknown User |
Ha! looks like the community is just as fragmented on this as I am. You guys may as well be the little voices in my head. On second thought, please don't do that. Mr_fusion, I started doing just that. I decided to do cleanup and more optimization just to mess around while deciding, and discovered a flaw in the scoring that I have to fix before publishing anyway. Plus now I have half the level pulled apart revamping minor things that just bothered me. arbiekko, that is an interesting idea. I may add that in whether or not the scoreboards are up when I publish. BTW-In case anyone was wondering, the game breaking problem is that my score doesn't go high enough. I only have a 14 bit binary number to hold the score and I need a 16 bit, which means I have to rewire my binary to BCD conversion...yay. | 2011-08-14 18:20:00 Author: tdarb Posts: 689 |
