Are there any problems with doing a HDD transplant between 2 PS3s?

Archive: 9 posts

Hey all,

Would I have any complications from taking my HDD from one PS3 and putting it in another? Warranty isn't an issue, I mean would it boot up just like the original? Would I still be able to access the game file data, or load up my moon in LBP? Or would it disable trophies or something like that?

If you are moving it from an old PS3 (phat?) into a slim, it will not work and wipes the HDD.

Not sure about moving it with the same PS3 version though, I'm afraid.

Short answer, Yes.

Long answer, it will automatically ask you to format your HDD upon putting it into a new system... Sigh. Lost all my LBP data. Also, the HDDs that come with the new slims are not the same brand as the ones from the first couple gens. They aren't even the same shape!

Couldn't you put all your LBP data onto a portable HDD, then export it all onto the new system? Or is this not possible?2011-08-10 19:30:00

If that was a practical option I'd have already taken it

I was hoping I could just pop my HDD into a friend's PS3 to work on something but... alas. Ah well, thanks everyone, you have been very helpful

No. The HDD in your PS3 is specific to your PS3. It will not work in another.

I've tried.

If you can put the two PS3s side by side, you can transfer data from one to another. But if you are only going to do simple stuff, use a handheld storage device.2011-08-11 17:35:00
