Interconnected levels and rooms

Archive: 4 posts

Now I know what you're thinking: We already have a means of linking levels together, the aptly-named Level Link. And indeed, that was one of the many steps forward Little Big Planet 2 took. But there's a few limitations to the Level Link that aren't easy to overcome, if even possible.

1. If you create a two-way link, that is, have two levels link to each other, you always start at the entry checkpoint of both levels. Given LBP2's emphasis on traditional sidescrolling gameplay, that's not such a big deal, but adventure levels would be more entertaining if there was a way to remember where you left a level and come back to it.

2. There is no way to detect changes between levels aside from using the Score Sensor. Other members have suggested ideas like Level Tags that can be turned on to activate Level Tag Sensors in another level, and that's definitely a start.

3. All levels take place in a field of the same size. This may seem like an odd limitation, but some players might like the freedom to create rooms of varying size, and it would be a waste to use only a small protion of that level space for a simple room. Warp Points as I have suggested them before would help solve this problem, but the idea I am about to divulge would go further than any of these solutions alone.

What if there was a feature that allowed you to create interconnected levels or rooms with unique links or doors between them? This would be worth more in a game with 3D level designing capabilities, but even 2D levels could achieve some degree of exploration with a feature like that. If this couldn't be implemented in LBP2, a direct or spiritual sequel could always introduce it instead.

you can already kind of do that, you don't have to just have the level link sitting there in the open, you can disgise it. My friend did this and her levels are absolutly beautiful. I cant give exact details since she hasnt published them yet. But I can give you an example.

Say you are entering a building and you get on the elevator, the doors close and you start going up, then the level link activates and the next level starts with the elevator reaching the desired floor and the doors opening.
something like that would work.

Is that what you mean?

That would work well going one way, but what if you wanted a two-way link? The only way that could be possible is if Level Links were able to connect to a specific Checkpoint or link in another level. But right now, Level Links only connect to entry points.

Maybe Two-Way Level Links could be a good idea? When you place one in a level and select a level to link to and then place a second link in that level and link back to the first one, you create a two-way level link that connects the links to each other instead of entry points.

If you want you can send me a friend request and I can show you how to carry data from one level to another.2011-08-17 10:19:00
