A good way to get plays and the opinions of others is to do Feedback for Feedback (F4F). Start playing other peoples levels and offer your own advice & opinion on there creation and in return, they will play yours. Rather simple but works out great and you can surely learn plenty. By the way, I did play your other level earlier and posted a comment in its thread.2011-08-13 19:52:00

Arrighty, just finished playing!

***CONTAINS SPOILERS!***

First of all, I enjoyed INSANITY a lot for its brave (and difficult!) puzzles which I see you modified to include strong hints. You have my empathy. It's so great coming up with challenging puzzles, but then players get upset, and we have to backpedal. In the end it improves the level though, and I was glad for the notes. Their instructional minimalism is actually a really great quality that fits the theme. We know at the end (or the beginning, really, thanks to the title) that the character is insane. A big part of insanity is "voices in the head" or "someone else" telling us to do things... but anyway!

Anyway, I liked INSANITY, and the setup it provided helped me REALLY liked this prequel.

The murders alone are worth the level... at first I thought you ought to unlock it and let players see it first, as it's enjoyable without backstory... but you're right, it's smart to lock it until players beat INSANITY, to control the order in which the details are revealed. I loved realizing that the butterfly was carried over from happier times... now a torturous enemy in a crazy land... a symbol of guilt?... and that the murders took place in the character's home! Gutsy and freaky! But is it the character's home??? It seems like the murders (first person view is a clever touch) are happening in a flashback, and we are remembering them around the area, from house to park... lots to think about. The killings are a delicious and guilty pleasure... again great to know the details of the first INSANITY since you can look forward to five. I also really like that you used the basic default sackboy outfit, like all victims could be "anybody", no distinct features, which leaves the story wide open for later. Could these be family members? Random strangers? And then you're running for your life, which suggests the murders happened just now... you get to experience the arrest!

The spikey death chair is so good I had to photograph it for my collection. Makes my skin crawl! And I appreciate the thinking that went into making the technical things work for murders like drowning in the water. I hope other players also realize how difficult it is to make LBP do certain things, before criticizing the visuals. At any rate, the gasping and slow, music-free deaths are very dispassionate and creepy and that's what counts. Really excellent vibe befitting a heartless maniac. Kudos on achieving this effect!

It makes me wonder, though... we know the murders happened, but we don't see the character do them... and we know the character is in an insane asylum, but we don't see the doctor... we DO get to wander around being chased and confused and generally terrified... but is it the character seeing these things, or the player? I guess my question is, does the sackboy know what we're seeing, or does only the player see it and the sackboy is in a helpless state of confusion? Does sackboy really not remember anything, including when we see the murder flashbacks? What about being arrested? Is ANY of it real? And if so, is it possible our character didn't actually commit the crime?

Oh and I have to say I loved the bed in the bedroom! Some materials are just perfect for that stuff, yeah?

Finally, this is a tremendous improvement in logic over INSANITY. Simple effects like triggering once, and counting effects out of order, are put to good effect. Like any good sequel (prequel! but you know what I mean) it's an all-around improvement on ideas while keeping the theme and actually improving both levels by sharing its details. It paints a bigger picture. A bloody one!

Nicely done.

Don't ask me how it made it that far lol I just kinda put it together in a few days and the next thing i knew it was getting lots of plays. I still wish it would have made it to page 1 of the cool pages, but i'm grateful that it got the plays it did. almost 500 right now. 2011-08-14 22:33:00

It's tough to get plays. Cool Pages levels succeed by first getting there, then to having a certain hard-to-identify appeal to casual players. True gamers of course will always appreciate a level and give it the time, but the real power is in those casuals who pop in and out of levels like candy, giving it 5 seconds, rating it, and running off to the next thing! It's too bad things work this way. Really.

Oh and yeah, I liked Shutter Island. Scorcese and Di Caprio! Good creative team. Should have realized, your level follows that same story arc!

I agree with arbiekko about the casual players. Unless it's a costume level or a bomb survival, it has almost no chance of getting to the top. I have a friend (yay9ysobeky9yay) who has awesome platforms and some nice challenging levels, but he was un-noticed. That is, until he made a costume level. Now, he has triple the creator hearts, the costume level made it to the first cool page, got 10K plays in a day and a half, and now all his other levels are finally getting played. I'm really happy for him. My level is now on page 5 and slowly dropping off from there (page 2 was as high as it got), but I had a good run. I thank everyone for getting me that far, and it motivates me to want to keep creating! 2011-08-15 19:52:00
