Dissolve Material -- Do you use it anymore?

Archive: 30 posts

I remember in LBP1 that Dissolve (along with Dark Matter) was incredibly useful, and could be found in probably >90% of levels.
Now in LBP2, we have tools to make any material dissolve (or explode, fall apart, splat... etc.) and so it's not even nearly as useful as it once was.

I don't think I have a single level (out of 50+) on my moon that features dissolve, and I was wondering; how about you guys?

I used it only once in my level down there (now that I think about it, it really isn't necessary either). I'm kind of a noob when it comes to logic, so I use basic and quick stuff to get the job done. Other than for super quick work, it truly isn't as useful as it used to be. 2011-08-08 00:45:00

I used it in my Pyramids of King Bobankhamen level...at the part where you put the puzzle together, I used dissolve material to keep the pieces hidden until a player sensor triggers them to fall. This is all hidden behind a thin layer, so you don't even see it, but it's there.2011-08-08 00:48:00

I only ever used it to make permanent switches, which I can do now with an or gate hooked up to itself. So no, I dont use it anymore.2011-08-08 02:23:00

I use it only in create, in the first stage of createing where I use the basic materals section. When I go into the details, I change it to a different materal. I dont use it in finished levels.2011-08-08 02:25:00

IT will stay there as long as LBP games will be able to play LBP1 levels, it sits there for compatibility reasons.

It's actually faster to use then destroyer, it needs 1 move for minimum setup, destroyer needs 2

Not published. Just on my moon. Of the 50-ish there's about ~20% Proof of Concept levels, ~50% Contraptions of some sort (eg. vehicles, robots, enemies... whatever), ~30% Actual levels, and I don't think any of them use dissolve. Mostly because it looks fairly ugly, and the actual dissolve effect isn't very nice (splat ftw).

Yes, but not for Dissolving. I use it as a Cardboard replacment.2011-08-09 13:13:00

I still like to use it for certain applications, especially when you need the extra thermo space the destroyer uses. This is especially in the case of some invisible walls...2011-08-09 13:58:00

Yep. Although the material itself takes up thermo, it only does so one time. 100 pieces of dissolve cost less thermo than 100 destroyers. Wiring the material up costs nothing.

What he said. It stickers nicely like cardboard and I like the texture (color?) for grass and stuff. Also when you need to take apart a shared object it's easier than a Destroyer.

Thanks for the tip... didn't know that.

I use it for one purpose really, when I want a movie camera to turn off I usually attach it to some dissolve material and destroy it when needed. It's cleaner than having an actual destroyer attached to the same block and I know exactly what it's there for when I see it.

It's just one of those things that's redundant as another object can achieve what it does - just like the toggle switch.

does it take up more, less, or the same amount of thermo as one equivalent piece of cardboard?2011-08-10 14:02:00

Yup.
I assumed it takes up less thermo than heaps of destroyers.
Plus I don't like how sponge covers up sackboy's feet. >=(

It was my favorite material in LBP 1, (well, next to cardboard, which still is my favorite ) but now I only used it once to prove to a friend how it's useless now. I miss dissolve material usefulness 2011-08-22 05:55:00

When my friend got LBP2, I was actually very surprised to find out that dissolve was still in the game, along with pink and peach floaty. To me, these materials are redundant now.2011-08-22 09:32:00

I still use it, but not for the conventional use.
It's very useful to make objects, because you can color it with the stickers and it will look nice and crisp, instead if you put stickers on rock, iron and other materials, not only you see the features of the material colored, but sometimes the color is less strong too.

^ And once Sticker panel material is out from Move pack, you and everyone else
will stop using dissolve even for that one reason
