http://www.blogcdn.com/www.ps3fanboy.com/media/2008/12/stereoscopeps3425.jpg Source (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/12/18/report-ps3-to-support-3d-stereoscopic-gaming-in-2009/) According to Meant to be Seen, "the world's first and only stereoscopic 3D Certification and Advocacy group," Sony "fully intends" on supporting 3D stereoscope technology next year. What does mean? It means the PS3 will be able to render an image which will appear to be 3D using special glasses. This kind of technology is most commonly found in movie theaters that present 3D movies. 3D stereoscopic technology will be implemented in both movies and games, according to MtbS. A simple firmware update is all that's needed to make this incredible tech possible on the PS3. In fact, the firmware update "may be unique to Sony PS3 versus the other console solutions." Intriguing. This sounds like it could be quite cool. I don't want it to be required, though, there needs to be an option to turn it off. And those glasses better not be as uncomfortable as they look. | 2008-12-19 02:08:00 Author: BassDeluxe Posts: 984 |
Wow, this is retarded... I'd look so stupid wearing those lmao... But yeah, I guess it would be cool, depends on the game I suppose. | 2008-12-19 02:09:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
If they made the glasses cooler looking, like sunglasses, I'm all for it. However, I wear normal glasses so I wouldn't be able to properly see the TV and wear them so it shouldn't be a requirement for any game. Could be pretty cool. | 2008-12-19 02:15:00 Author: Burrich Posts: 1018 |
God **** it, I can't wear two glasses at once. Unless they are adjustable somehow. But yeah, your problem of 'looking silly' doesn't phase me. Hm: Would I rather: 1. Be able to play games that POP out at me 2. Be 'cool' according to society's standards Hm.... Hm.... I'll have to think about that one. | 2008-12-19 02:19:00 Author: Unknown User |
It's a cool idea. I'm interested to see how it turns out though. | 2008-12-19 02:47:00 Author: Frank-the-Bunny Posts: 1246 |
Concentrate on the important things please sony... | 2008-12-19 04:34:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
Actually, this looks pretty cool if done right. First of all, the glasses are not that retarded-looking. In fact, if this became semi-standard, you could probably buy padded, plastic glasses that were thin and adjustable for people who already wear glasses. They aren't that intrusive, actually. Plus, the 3D does really look real with the kind of 3D that Disney uses, so if they would go that route, we'd get some really awesome looking games. | 2008-12-19 04:56:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
Can you imagine playing something like Dead Space with those on?? I may have a heart attack!! Amazing. I hope it happens. | 2008-12-19 09:48:00 Author: flakmagnet Posts: 1084 |
Can you imagine playing something like Dead Space with those on?? I may have a heart attack!! Amazing. I hope it happens. You know what, if it did, I would have bought that game! I think this is good news, just more stuff you can do thanks to your PS3 | 2008-12-19 09:53:00 Author: KAPBAM Posts: 1348 |
Hey, DS is a worthwhile buy, 3D or not. But that's for another thread. Additional games that would be great in 3D include FPSes, Racing games, (especially something like Burnout, just imagine a flying wreck coming out of your screen towards you!) heck, I can't think of many games that WOULDN'T be better with 3D... | 2008-12-19 10:21:00 Author: flakmagnet Posts: 1084 |
Great, another useless firmware update. | 2008-12-19 10:50:00 Author: Rabid-Coot Posts: 6728 |
3D is something I thought was cool as a kid. I don't need that with gaming. | 2008-12-19 10:54:00 Author: Unknown User |
3D is always good if done right. | 2008-12-19 15:07:00 Author: Teh_Bucko Posts: 246 |
What I'm worried about is if I have 10 people over to watch a film or take turns playing a game. Am I going to have to get 10 sets of glasses? Will they cost a lot? I sure hope not. If it's too expensive per unit, that would be a major turn off for me. If games and movies supported both 3D and normal vision without needing to buy different version, and if the glasses were not expensive at all, then it certianly sounds interesting though. | 2008-12-19 15:31:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |
I dunno, I think they're pretty cheap to manufacture. | 2008-12-19 17:00:00 Author: flakmagnet Posts: 1084 |
Yeah, this is a horrible idea if it is referring to the whole blue and red glasses thing. What is this? The 90's? | 2008-12-21 17:47:00 Author: UmJammerSully Posts: 1097 |
Can you imagine playing something like Dead Space with those on?? I may have a heart attack!! Amazing. I hope it happens. That would seriously scare the bejeebus out of me :o | 2008-12-21 18:15:00 Author: Boomy Posts: 3701 |
That would seriously scare the bejeebus out of me :o How about...KILLZONE 2?! The debree will be spraying in your face like there's no tomorrow... | 2008-12-21 18:16:00 Author: TheArmedReaper Posts: 1543 |
Any FPS would work great, you could see the debris falling towards you, bullets pinging around your head, the explosions from the grenades coming at you... very atmospheric. The 3D isn't as simple as red/blue glasses in a magazine any more, similar, but not the same. If you've ever been to one of the 3D attractions at a theme park, I think it'd be similar, though more complex, than that, as obviously you are running a simulation at all times rather than using a static filmed object that will stay the same every time you play the film. There's a great pair of articles on wiki about this kind of thing. There are basically 2 types of 3D glasses, I think we'd be using the basic ones (first link) until TVs upgrade again, neither article mentions games yet, but it's interesting all the same: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3d_glasses http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarized_3D_glasses | 2008-12-21 19:02:00 Author: flakmagnet Posts: 1084 |
I just can't see this happening on a large scale anytime soon, developers are trying to reduce costs not add to them. | 2008-12-21 19:23:00 Author: Rabid-Coot Posts: 6728 |
www.edimensional.com i have those glasses. bought years ago. they're AMAZING but i got a headache after just a minute or two. sad because they really are amazing. | 2008-12-21 20:57:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
It would be cool, but.......Make the glasses different >_> lol (just imagine playing Dead Space) | 2008-12-21 21:42:00 Author: BloodFlameX Posts: 349 |
We live in a 3D world, so how can anyone say that they wouldn't want to try out a game in 3D This would be a great addition to gaming in my opinion, and I don't care how silly you look (you don't play your games out in public, do you???) If only for the novelty factor, I always like trying new things | 2008-12-21 21:51:00 Author: dorien Posts: 2767 |
Wow, this is retarded... I'd look so stupid wearing those lmao... But yeah, I guess it would be cool, depends on the game I suppose. This is stupid?!? 3D has never been a bad idea! EVER! Remember Jaws 3D? .....Oh yeah. | 2008-12-21 21:56:00 Author: qrtda235566 Posts: 3664 |
Oh, it's being done by a shovelware developer (the Bratz people). I was going to say... | 2008-12-21 22:45:00 Author: Unknown User |
So by 3D, do they mean just look at the screen in 3D, or do they mean run around your living room knocking over the furniture 3D? | 2008-12-21 22:47:00 Author: Unknown User |
So by 3D, do they mean just look at the screen in 3D, or do they mean run around your living room knocking over the furniture 3D? Look at, Clank. Lol | 2008-12-21 22:57:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
We already have run around your living room 3D, it's called the wii. It's over-rated. No, 3D to look at. Why would anyone not want 3D if it was done well? Yes, the first few games may not be perfect, but it's a direction that could be continued well. I'm looking forward to seeing it excel. | 2008-12-22 10:28:00 Author: flakmagnet Posts: 1084 |
So by 3D, do they mean just look at the screen in 3D, or do they mean run around your living room knocking over the furniture 3D? I think I might change my vote towards you, from biggest spam to funniest member. I seriously got a laugh out of that. But seriously, games like Dead Space would be completely awesome. Killzone 2, Burnout... Wow this is starting to sound good. But man those glasses, they seem so uncomfortable. I hope they won't be like that. | 2008-12-22 10:50:00 Author: Whalio Cappuccino Posts: 5250 |
Meh, if you've ever been to anything like the Muppets 3D or Honey I shrunk the Audience at a theme park, I think they'd be like that. Cheap and easily re-produced, probably quite light I would imagine. | 2008-12-22 11:52:00 Author: flakmagnet Posts: 1084 |
If this is as good as those 3D rides you get in amusement parks then it'll be awesome. Admitedly the glasses look crappy but you can guarantee that if Sony don't make decent looking ones, third party developers will. I was under the impression that you had to have a special type of TV to be able to do 3D, like one capable of a very high refresh rate. Has anyone played Metal Gear Ac!d 2? It's pretty cool having depth perception in a game. I'd think it'd be not only cool but extremely useful in first-person shooters and the likes. | 2008-12-22 15:28:00 Author: AtheistSeaOtter Posts: 54 |
Headtracking makes better immersion at a much lower cost; also, it actually works better than the two-color 3D we're all used to seeing.
