Transforming rifle help.

Archive: 5 posts

Okay, now I was workin on a little project involving a rifle that has the ability to transform. What I'm basically asking for is, if any piston or any other sort of logic/mechanics are able to push blocks up, forward, then back down. I have provided some photos that hopefully illustrate what I'm trying to do and wondered if it can be accomplished. Any help would be appreciated

In this photo, the barrel extends out. Just a heads up to avoid confusion

For this project, I was hoping I could keep the gun as clean as possible, even in create mode. But beggars can't be choosers, so again, any help would be appreciated. It would even cooler if anyone could get in touch with me, meet up in LBP2 and help me figure out this project of mine. Much obliged.

it would depend on how the rifle was being used, would it transform during gameplay? does it need to change back? or does it just transform during a cut scenes?

if it's just a cut scene you could use tag followers (maybe activated with batteries on a sequencer) and place tags on 0% brightness holographic material then just set up the batteries so it happens in the right order.
if it's during gameplay you'd have to use a different method because followers never quite keep up with movements, so it wouldnt look/behave properly. so a piston setup would work better, but with a setup like that it can be difficult

^ For what I was doing, it had to transform DURING gameplay, and yeah, it does change back. I actually like the idea of your tag/tag follower, so I went ahead and tried using your tag and tag followers method. Basically what I did (made some changes) was make a holographic "rail" where the parts will follow and a tag on the holograph, which acts as way points for the parts to follow. Also using a selector to cycle through which followers to activate to follow a specific order, and setting it to Forward/Backward to HOPEFULLY reset itself in the correct order.... Took me a good 10 minutes or so trying to build a plan that would work based off of your idea.

I really appreciate your input for this . Hopefully it works! Haha.

the issue comes when you start moving the rifle around, with the follower setup they will never stay exactly in place, unless it's moving really slow, if the gun rotates aswell that can cause another issue with the pieces not staying at the right angle relative to the rest of the gun, you'll have to consider angle matching logic if thats the case. i have made an accurate angle matcher but i'm not very good at explaining things so i wouldn't know where to start. i've given it to a few friends so i may be able to convince one of them to do a tutorial for it2011-08-07 10:51:00

Another way is to use frame based animation: have a holo shape function as the base of your weapon; it emits several stages of the transforming gun in sequence.2011-08-07 13:25:00
