People Play LBP!

Archive: 18 posts

So we were all a little disappointed to hear all the talk of "poor sales" for LBP. According to what I understood of it, they weren't poor, just not as high as expected. So here comes a tid bit of news I found interesting. Seems LBP ranks high up in terms of "interactions". Meaning we play it, we watch it on youtube, we talk about it in fansites Guess that explains why there is no lack of good levels to play in LBP

Here is the Kotaku article, and the chart to go with it:

It's easy to track the biggest-selling games. You can track them with sales numbers. But how do you track the most-engaging games? That's harder. But Networked Insights reckon they've got the answer.

The research firm believe that tracking a game's success via sales numbers is baloney. People like advertisers want to know how many people are playing (and talking about) their games, not how many people are buying them.

So they started tracking message boards, social networking sites and user content sites like YouTube to see which games were the most engaging, then compared that to the October NPD list of best-sellers.

The results are, as you'd expect, not the same.

LittleBigPlanet, for example, is much higher on NI's charts than it was on NPD's, courtesy of its heavy emphasis on community and user-generated content. GTAIV is back near the top too, courtesy of its multiplayer and, we guess, the fact it's still a talking point over six months after release.

Interesting, no?

I thought so

Makes sense in a way, you wouldn't expect many people to form fansites around Wii Fit or Wii Play

That's some good info though.

Yeah. But is this just on PS3? I though Guitar Hero would've been up there, not 9th.2008-12-18 18:43:00

Nope, it's Console games, (look at the Wii titles ) Think about it, how many people talk about GH or watch videos? I imagine there must be communities, and people do get together to play and so plan things out around it, which is why it is in the top ten 2008-12-18 18:52:00

NEWS FLASH!!!!!!!
People play LBP and talk about it on the internet
Wow
LOL on a serious note, this game deserves all the recognition it gets and I think sites like this and word of mouth will only make LBP grow
The more people understand what LBP is all about the more people will start buying this game
And then it will be top of both of those lists

Check it out. I bought Resistance2 and LittleBigPlanet at the same time. First few nights I would play Resistance2 for a while then go into LBP and play a little.

At this point I go home, flip on LBP to see how many hearts I got that day, do a few changes to my level, my wife tells me to turn the stinking thing off and put on Judge Judy or I will need to get her another TV, my son comes in and wants to work on his level and make it as good as Azure Palace (he's 6 and put the dragon head on his screen next to a ramp). I have not turned on Resistance2 in the last 2 weeks.

Here's my point: with virtually all those other games people will buy it, play it through, and probably trade it in. Then the sales stop for that game and you find it on the bargain bin 8 months later.

If Sony plays it's cards right, LittleBigPlanet will be a game that people will buy and keep for the duration they own the PS3. And it will steadily sell over a long period of time because the user-created content will drive it on.

Unless they don't fix the search system...

Excelent point CCubbage. That's the interesting bit I derived from this article. And you're right, if well upkept, this game will go on for a very long time. Just giving us weekly reminders to keep the game by form of DLC is exactly what will stop many from trading in, and will make others want a bran-spankin' new copy cause they'll want it to stay in their library of games.2008-12-18 20:27:00

Interestingly, even with less initial sales Sony stands to make a bunch of money with add-on content.

Let's say they release some really nice add-ons with great realistic-looking objects and decorations. I think a vast majority of user-content-creators would jump on it.

(Sony, if your listening, I would LOVE a realistic-looking spear. My tribes-people just don't look quite right carrying swords).

J, a friend of mine who I mention in my blog sometimes, use to talk about Wii Play quite a bit, in all seriousness. When he first got his Wii, he and his father would play the 2 player tank battles for hours and hours and hours on end.

Sure, it's not a billion dollar development project, but that does not mean it's addictive or good.

I've had social interactions with complete strangers about LBP in real life. Wii Fit I have talked about many times with my friends, it's often highlighted as a good reason to purchase a Wii.

I could go on and on about how one can talk about games to other people, and it does not always center around what's in the top 10 being sold.

My point is, don't knock games that seem poorer for whatever reason in your own eyes. Not everyone sees the world as you might. I don't mean to sound elitist or rude about this, but I just feel rubbed the wrong way that people are making what seems like a simple game and making it sound essentially awful because of this.

I once played a 4 hour marathon in the Wii play fishing game

(in the immortal words of Brian Regan: "I'm not EVEN fishing. I'm too lazy to fish!"

Interestingly, as soon as I installed the patch and went in to work on one of my levels, I heard the "crunch" sound telling me that something somewhere in my level had been just disappeared.

Turns out a chunk of poisonous gas material that my whale was swimming through disappeared. I placed it back several times and it kept disappearing again. Changed the size of it to smaller and it stayed.

Just giving a heads up in case someone else mysteriously hears the "crunch" sound. No bigee.
