2D Platforming. Period.

Archive: 15 posts

Hello, I am poorjack. You may remember me from such rants as "2D Platforming is Going to Die!" and "That's Not Your Wristwatch! Get Your Own Wristwatch!" Well I am here today to start a more optimistic thread. Let's talk 2D platforming. What do you look for in a 2D platformer? And by 2D platformer, I mean anything from 'Pitfall' to LBP2.

Personally, I look for Run, Jump, Shoot type gameplay. I also give a lot of points to exploration and hidden areas. One newer game that surprises one with how much hidden crap it has is 'Blade Kitten' on PSN. It has a horrible storyline though, and the dialog is PAINFUL to listen to, but it's gameplay is fun, and it has a lot of collectibles

Another 2D platformer I recently fell in love with is 'Limbo.' If you haven't played it yet, download the demo. It is one beautiful piece of platforming puzzling gold.

What about you guise? What are your opinions on 2D platforming as a genre? What are some of your favorite titles that fall under this category? What do you think of the new 2D Megaman, and Sonic titles?

I like almost everything about them...
some people may think they are more limited...
but i don't think so to be honest. plus it's more easy to get artistic type games
and better charming animations with 2D/2.5D IMO...
I don't like how in most 3D gameplay it's hard to control where you want your person to go
and over half the time it all just feels so messy.
and the gameplay is just so fun in platformers or other types of 2D games.
like Odin-Sphere 8&apos ... goodness i love that game... so pretty and fun~

Well, I like 3D games too, but 2D platforming has so much... Personality. And heritage. Like, what's the greatest 3D game of all time? Majora's Mask? GTA IV? Something by Bethesda? K. Those are really awesome games, but they lack the simple spirit, and the aura of childhood fun. Just the name "Mario" Brings a smile to my face. Hop and bop is where it is at. I mean EVERYONE loves Mario. You can't NOT love SMB for nes and snes. And I just haven't felt that feeling again since. SM64 was good, but it felt like a new experience that was almost lowered in quality. NSMB was good too, but the magic is gone. It ended with Donkey Kong Country. Shigeru Miyamoto was disappointed in the games industry, because it was the first time that graphics outsold game play by THAT MUCH.... I admit, DKC is a good game, but that is not why it sold well. Miyamoto himsellf has said he is ashamed of that series.

But back to platforming... Odin-Sphere? lookin it up nao.

Mario? I don't like him... never did. hes ugly and boring to me xD
but still i also don't hate him at all or anything...

I also like 3d games. not saying i don't,
and i don't like 2D games just because i grew up with them...
I don't rate things that way. I judge every game based on if I truly found it good or not.

While I recogniise that they're competantly constructed games I wouldn't say I loved them or even liked them enough for more than about an hours worth of play.

Really? Hm. I really REALLY loved SMB. And everyone I have ever met loves SMB. I realise it may not have aged as gracefully as others, but I really still do find a lot in that series.2011-08-03 15:08:00

Ocarina of Time.

It's good. My second favorite Zelda game. But have you compared it to Majora's Mask? Whatever.

Yes, I have. I actually just finished my 100% OoT run this morning, and finished MM not too long ago (I have played them many times before, just saying this to show that they are fresh in my mind), and I enjoy Ocarina far more. Majora's Mask didn't have the same feel to it. One question, did you play Majora's Mask or Ocarina of Time first?

Fixed it for yah.

I lol'd at that. Ocarina of Time was revolutionary for 3D games. Wind Waker, while still good, wasn't. If I could nega-rep you, I would.

LOL. Really? Wind Waker has a better storyline than Ocarina on a superior system with a larger map and a cooler final boss battle.

I am failing to understand how it being on a superior system automatically makes it better. Storyline could be debated, but I'm not one for too much story. As for the larger map, you are correct, but it was all water. Not sure how a larger map makes the game better. The WW final boss was okay, not better or worse than Ocarina's. I just find it odd that a bigger map and it being on a next-gen system made it superior.

EDIT: Let me just try and sum up my point here: Ocarina of Time set the standards for both future Zelda games and just 3D adventure games in general. It is by far the most important Zelda game there is, and without it there wouldn't be a Majora's Mask or a Wind Waker.

I agree that it is the most important Zelda. hell, I would say it is in the top 3 most important GAMES. But it is flawed, though it is a classic. Wind Wakers map makes it better because of the sheer amount of little islands and secrets. and the treasure to find under the water. There is so much more exploration to be done in WW than OOT. And the entire final act of WW, what with all the revisited bosses, and his puppet, and then facing off on the rooftop... It was cool. The nautical theme was really fun and interesting too. Not to mention the tie ins with OOT that brought it all full circle. I feel that Wind Waker is a fuller experience than OOT will ever be. But neither can compare to the darkness and power of Majora's Mask2011-08-03 19:27:00
