Distinguished Users

We have a new "Distinguished Users" usergroup, which unlike the other possible upgrades, cannot be purchased through the shop. It will instead be incentive; users who manage to be included in this usergroup will be prime examples of a fantastic member. One who contributes frequently, provides feedback to the site (both positive and negative), and is always there to help. There are major perks to being in this usergroup (don't ask, we're not going to discuss them), obviously, but it will be a limited number of users who are included. We have not yet decided on who we want to include, but the staff as a whole will help decide who deserves it. This is another way in which we are working to reward the members who go above and beyond, in all areas. EDIT: I was thinking about it, and I realized this may seem like we're trying to foster a sense of elitism. I want to ensure you guys that we are working to do exactly the opposite: we will be using this to single members out who are especially helpful and respectful, as a resource for new and existing members. We will also keep an eye on the behavior of the selections to ensure there are no supersized egos. If we notice anything like that, we will pull the "Distinguished" status of the user in question. I just want you all to know that this is meant to be helpful to everyone, not just the people we choose. | 2008-12-18 06:28:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |

That's great! But guys, remember, what happens in VIP stays in VIP. O_O On a slightly more serious note, congratulations in advance for those top members who do indeed get in, and once again, a great idea Cartman and staff. | 2008-12-18 06:38:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
i think all the staff should be automatically upgraded to this as they all do such good work! | 2008-12-18 06:39:00 Author: Thee-Flash Posts: 3154 |
i think all the staff should be automatically upgraded to this as they all do such good work! Thanks, but the staff already has perks. This is meant to be a way to highlight the best users without shouldering them with the responsibility of moderating. | 2008-12-18 06:43:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
But guys, remember, what happens in VIP stays in VIP. O_O LOL This is meant to be a way to highlight the best users without shouldering them with the responsibility of moderating. That sounds like a neat idea. Follows the good vibe this site already gives out. | 2008-12-18 06:46:00 Author: KAPBAM Posts: 1348 |

This really is a great idea. I hope that at the very least it will prompt more people to be little more supportive of other forum members, especially where the level showcase is concerned by providing feedback etc. | 2008-12-18 08:47:00 Author: OCK Posts: 1536 |
Wow this is absolutely amazing... here I am trying to write a paper for english class and I decide to check the site and........ BAM! here's this! We would have to be careful of people A.) getting power-crazy and B.) just posting a lot and impressing everyone then getting lazy or posting a whole bunch of non-helpful things but I totally believe this could work! Nice Job CC | 2008-12-18 10:03:00 Author: DarkGod13 Posts: 302 |
This is a nice idea, but I think it needs to be approached with caution. I've stopped looking at littlebigworkshop.com because on the threads I'm interested in there seems to be a small clique of 'elite' users, where to disagree with one is to disagree with all. I prefer this site's more laid back, yet better organised approach and I'd hate to see a hierarchy like the one on lbw develop here. | 2008-12-18 10:07:00 Author: KenBlayton Posts: 21 |
Great idea! Forums like this can only survive with regular contributors. Hopefully this will stimulate a few lurkers into becoming more active. My only concern is as mentioned, the sense of elitism that could evolve. As long as this was handled correctly though it should work to better the site most definitly! Again great idea! | 2008-12-18 10:14:00 Author: wexfordian Posts: 1904 |
I wonder, if someone starts contributing like hell, and the mods think it's ok to put him in the VIP usergroup, will he be kicked out if he starts being lazy and stops with contributing once he is in the VIP group? | 2008-12-18 10:23:00 Author: oldage Posts: 2824 |

I prefer this site's more laid back, yet better organised approach and I'd hate to see a hierarchy like the one on lbw develop here. Like I mentioned, we're going to do our best to ensure that we avoid that kind of atmosphere. The first step is picking users who won't develop that kind of attitude, and that takes some time. I can promise that the whole staff is involved in discussing possible users for this. I wonder, if someone starts contributing like hell, and the mods think it's ok to put him in the VIP usergroup, will he be kicked out if he starts being lazy and stops with contributing once he is in the VIP group? In that case, we'll contact the user and make sure there isn't anything going on in their personal life that is keeping them from doing so. If we don't get an answer or we decide that it makes sense, then yes, we'll pull people from the group if they don't live up to it's name. | 2008-12-18 14:27:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
so when we say perks, we have as much power as a mod only without the responsibility to manage the forums "as much" Also will you have to have a certain level of rep points, as the point of that system is to point out, who in the forums is the most helpful and polite, although i guess it's up to you mods/admins | 2008-12-18 14:41:00 Author: Thee-Flash Posts: 3154 |
so when we say perks, we have as much power as a mod only without the responsibility to manage the forums "as much" Not quite. We're going over the perks, but a VIP member will not have moderator-specific "perks" or responsibilities. That is, a VIP member will not have be able to moderate - if you will - whether they wish to or not. will you have to have a certain level of rep points, as the point of that system is to point out, who in the forums is the most helpful and polite, although i guess it's up to you mods/admins The process of becoming a VIP member will not be point-based. That is, points will not directly configure into one's invitation to the VIP group. Those chosen for membership will be chosen on a case-by-case basis whereas some members may have high post counts and others may not. | 2008-12-18 15:50:00 Author: supersickie Posts: 1366 |

Hmmmm.... honestly... i don't know if i like the idea. Despite what anyone would say, there would be a clear sense of elitism with this. It can't be helped, with anything like this it can't be. To be direct; if I was not part of this group i would feel rather dissapointed, and wonder why not. Now, you clearly can't go giving the VIP's out like candy, or it will pretty much void the whole idea. So when it comes down to it, any member who's contributed a fair bit who didn't get into the VIP section will be dissapointed, and i don't know if that's such a great feeling to have spread around the forum. Cause many people will feel with way when these members are announced. It's unavoidable. Just thought i should say what's on my mind. | 2008-12-18 17:32:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
I don't have much of a problem with the concept, I think it's cool of you to want to give recognition to your members when you don't really have to. However, I do feel that the name VIP goes against the intent if you don't want to promote elitism. VIP means Very Important Person, which adversely sends the message that someone who is not VIP is a "less important person". I think a more neutral name should be adopted. Perhaps something such as "Venerable users" or "Honorable users" for instance. Just a suggestion. | 2008-12-18 17:43:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |

I sort of got ryry's point, but that's not how I feel about it. I do agree with Gil however that VIP is what seems off about this. It does sound a little too glorifying. Maybe something that follows the site's scheme like oh I dunno, just suggestions here, but Platinum User, or... man I can't think of any other, but I like Gil's suggestions too. What do you think CC and/or mods? Of course the thought crossed my mind that I might be in this group, but if I am not, changes nothing about how I feel about this site. I do think that the VIP title is what made me uneasy about responding to the subject. So yea, what do you guys think? | 2008-12-18 17:56:00 Author: KAPBAM Posts: 1348 |
Well, if it's all in the name of good fun (and a sly scheme to rule the worl- I mean... encourage people to behave better...), then why not? Not that it would make a difference to me either way. >_> But I think I should pitch in with Gil and Kap and say that the name should be changed to something a little more modest. Also, I don't think anyone should worry about elitism thanks to the way the system will be set up. Assuming it's set up properly, that is. >_> | 2008-12-18 18:23:00 Author: ScytheOfGrim Posts: 438 |
But I think I should pitch in with Gil and Kap and say that the name should be changed to something a little more modest. i know change it to everyone in this group is brilliant and if you aren't in it you suck. that's a really modest name seriously though i think VIP is a fine name but whatever | 2008-12-18 18:30:00 Author: Don Vhalt Posts: 2270 |
yeah, I mean I don't think VIP is that bad and I'm really not worried about elitism granted the system set up is executed properly. (Which I know CC will make sure of ) so yeah I don't think we have anything to worry about. | 2008-12-18 19:15:00 Author: DarkGod13 Posts: 302 |

Yeah, I mean we already have an Elite trophy upgrade And I don't think any of the members that have purchased it have changed in any way whatsoever and still post the same as they have always This site could survive any changes because the members that come here are amazing | 2008-12-18 19:33:00 Author: dorien Posts: 2767 |
I agree that the name should be changed. VIP smacks of elitism, even if that is not the intention. I was going to say I disagree with the whole idea, but I think since so many are keen on this idea, just a name change should be considered. How about.... Valued Member, or Goldmember..... lol... no.. um, User of Excellence or something like that. | 2008-12-18 22:23:00 Author: chillum007 Posts: 228 |

I could see some people getting a big ego. That being said, I think most people here wouldn't get a big head, and those that would probably wouldn't be chosen. Worst case scenario, someone is misjudged, given VIP, gets a big head, and is taken off the VIP list. | 2008-12-18 22:24:00 Author: BassDeluxe Posts: 984 |
Ok I just had to... SnnUmfaJ41k We had this song in my graduating year's fashion show (I was in fashion design, for those who don't know) and it was actually awesome with clothes that were showing off, minus the video of course xP Notice what the girls point to when he says VIP btw | 2008-12-18 22:37:00 Author: KAPBAM Posts: 1348 |
Reading everyone comments, I suppose I've grown on the idea of this. As long as being a VIP would make the person have useful enhancements, and not just to place a name on them (otherwise it's like having someone say 'this person is better than you!&apos it could be quite a cool feature. | 2008-12-18 23:36:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
Alright, I can see your point, guys. The name does make it seem as if we are trying to make someone more important than the others, and I don't want people to get that impression. I'm thinking "Distinguished" would be a good way to say what we're trying to say. What do you guys think? | 2008-12-19 00:41:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |

Yeah I suppose that that would be a perfect word for anyone that previously was having problems with "VIP" and I can definitely see where people are coming from. | 2008-12-19 00:55:00 Author: DarkGod13 Posts: 302 |
I'm thinking "Distinguished" would be a good way to say what we're trying to say. Sounds right to me. Seems to evoke exactly what you said this upgrade was about in the OP. | 2008-12-19 00:57:00 Author: KAPBAM Posts: 1348 |
Alright, it's been changed. We're still deciding who we want to add, but we're almost finished and should have a final list soon. Also, remember that distinguished users will be expected to be good, humble members. We'll let the selections know in more detail what we expect, but I want you guys to know that this isn't some giveaway so the better members get better stuff. I want these guys to be approachable, friendly, and willing to help anyone with site-related issues. It's a bit of responsibility, but that's why we're being so careful with who we choose. | 2008-12-19 01:07:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
hey sorry I hate to be picky.... but it'll bug me... the title now says "Distinguised Users" not "Distinguished Users"... Anyway yes "Distinguished Users" as a final name sounds good. I'm happy with it. | 2008-12-19 01:27:00 Author: DarkGod13 Posts: 302 |

I'm happy with it. Whoops, my mistake. Fixed. Also, PMs have been sent to the selections (there are 3 that we decided on), and we are awaiting their opinion and hoping they accept. The first of three has accepted the invitation. Congrats OCK! By the way, guys, I want to make something clear, just so you know: members who become "distinguished" have been selected because they are great members. Although it's possible, we probably won't draw from this group for site staff. We want this to be different from staff, but in a good way. | 2008-12-19 03:06:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |

hahahaha cool, but i need to stress some caution to you guys, For BP on the criterion games website forums, they did the same thing, there were distinguished users called elite users, and they got dibs on some early content and all kinds of stuff, the other users on the site wanted to be like that and because of it, the gelousy got a little out of hand and the users were complaining, and so all of that was stripped, please do not let this happen at all costs, you will lose members, just heed my warning and be careful ^.^ they lost lots of users this way including me. Cheers! Well, we're not giving access to any part of the site that normal members don't have access to. They have the ability to post Front Page News, but that's due to the fact that they are trusted with it, not just because we wanted to give a perk. There really isn't anything undeserved or jealously-worthy; we just give them more options so they can help in more ways than they could before. | 2008-12-20 00:13:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |

We've got others in line for the future, don't worry. We just don't want to add too many at once, as this is a sort of "test" to see how things go overall. We'll add more as time goes on. | 2008-12-20 01:11:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |

Excellent! KAPBAM's name now goes great with his avi and sig xD Congrats to all of you who got in =D Thanks and lol, go figure, being the designer that I am, the first thing I thought when I saw the colour was "Oh nice, that matches my avatar perfectly!" xP | 2008-12-20 06:25:00 Author: KAPBAM Posts: 1348 |
Distinguished as a title seems like a neat idea most certainly. But I totally understand where the fear of elitism may come in. For the most part it's just human nature. Surprisingly, I tend to see a lot of people with this title. That, or it just seems to pop up frequently wherever I go. Maybe I'm just imagining things. I personally wouldn't mind being D'ed, but I certainly don't need it. Now, having a little custom title that says "Reviewer" or "Critic" with a little check mark in the background, that would be awesome | 2009-02-11 05:00:00 Author: Shining Aquas Posts: 353 |

I'm probabley too new to gain the title but I hope that some good people get to be in this group. I've been helped a lot and I think this is a great idea - nice one CC and anyone else who helped | 2009-02-11 07:17:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |

Those four are good choices. They seem to continually help out, I used to assume they were mods. | 2009-02-11 12:00:00 Author: Walter-Kovacs Posts: 542 |
Really? Must be my imagination then. That, or the distinguished users are just EVERYWHERE! Hehe, WE ARE O_O lol. Seriously though that was the plan when we were given that status, was for us to be visible and for that visibility to make it easy for anyone seeking help to know where to go Those four are good choices. They seem to continually help out, I used to assume they were mods. Lol, nope, not mods, but definitely here to help | 2009-02-12 02:02:00 Author: KAPBAM Posts: 1348 |
