CrisisWoodburyRaider/WoodburyRaiderhttp://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff393/valmassoilbpc/PSP%20Episode%2065/IMG_4737.jpgWorld War III: Part 1

Crisis is one of the most unique levels you'll find on the community moon. WoodburyRaider mixes platforming, puzzles, story, multiple-paths, and RPG elements all into this one level. Sounds crazy, but somehow, it all works oh-so perfectly. Crisis is one not to miss.
WoodburyRaider delivers a masterpeice of a Role Playing Game with his newest level Crisis. This Infamous-esque Role Player comes packed full of challenging platforming, remarkable Corner Editing, well crafted characters, and most importantly, outstanding gameplay! Who knew a WWIII environment could be so much fun to play through? For a level that claims to be a crisis, this level didn't cause that amongst whether to choose it for a spotlight! We were swayed by the clever RPG elements, the simple but fun platforming and the overall feel that this level was something new and different. A step in the right direction? More like a leap of pure awesomeness from Woodbury!

The first part in a new level series. This is where it all begins. The decisions you make effect other people's perceptions of you forever.

Enjoy this multi-path RPG-style level originally inspired by Spark151's Autumn Maple Leaves. This is my first attempt at a level with everything: story, platforming, and puzzles. Who knows? Maybe you'll even find it humorous with a hidden Spark151 reference.

I'm not too sure as of what date I can give you feedback BUT I AM pretty sure I will be able to give this a run through (Maybe two if there's enough bubbles) later on today. Rock on 'till then Woodbury.2011-08-01 15:56:00

This was awesome! I loved the choice that you had to make but I was sad that I couldn't save the guy with the sick flow . The level looked very nice and had some nice simple platforming and a fun but slightly over used puzzle. One problem I had with the level was that I left the sewer without the sticks went to the boy and he told me to go talk to the guy who was stuck in the tree. Then he told me to go talk to that other guy near the sewer (forgot his name) The speech bubble was there but he wasn't! Also what exactly did the ball do? Anyway this level was so awesome due to its RPG feel and its overall awesomeness. I gave it :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3! Can't wait for level two!2011-08-01 16:00:00

Thanks for the feedback austimerr! Don't worry about the guy with sick flow, he'll make another appearance soon enough. I originally thought about not having them tell you to go back to the sewer if you didn't grab the wood initially, but then I was like "Meh, might as well add that in too." The reason the guy didn't show up for you was because it just so happened that at the exact moment you left the sewer and triggered the "cutscene," the guy attempted to emit himself but the bird you saw earlier got in his way. It's a random glitch that I couldn't fix and you just got terribly unlucky that you triggered it at exactly the right thirteen second time interval and I'm sorry for that. Anyways, I'm glad you were able to ignore that and continue on, Part II is on its way.

Thanks, let me know if there are two speech bubbles that are still messed up on the "good" path. I'm working on fixing it now so you may want to hold back on the download or let me know if you think it's worth republishing for. For some reason, when you push the thermo like I did, speech bubbles have a tendency to add/lose random characters, another annoying glitch on the PSP version.

Crisis
WoodburyRider
Score: 8/10
Rating::star::star::star::star::star:

This is where it all begins.

Story:
I like the concept, but I thought you focused to much on helping others out. Some parts were bland in this level i think. The real interesting part of the level was the morallity system, which in part was real executed. I want to see how this system is incorperated into future levels. 7.25/10

Gameplay:
There were many good aspects in this area. The platforming had nice flow to it, and was solid for most of the level. There were many neat mini-puzzles in the level. My major issue in this level was its design, in which the layout was X-axis heavy. There could've been some more vertical gameplay. Also the level was very easy, in my opinion, but I did have a lot of fun with the level. 7.75/10

Sound/Fx:
The music fit the level well. The Fx were good in number and quality. 9/10

Asthetics:
The visuals were good in this level, but there are many aspects that can be worked on in this area. You had very good material choice, but I wouldn't use that basic stone as that look out of place. The characters and objects looked very well done. There were barely any stickers in the level, but it stil looked good considering the eviorment. I didn't like the corner editing that much, as the leaves in the trees looked slopy, and the caves looked jagged. The only thing that looked rewarding in the corner editing was the grounds and the thin layers on it. 8/10

Originaliy:
The Autumn Maple Leaves setup hiders this area, but there were many original things in this level. 8/10

Misc:
Nothing wrong here that I saw. 10/10

Crisis is a promising start to a news series by WoodburyRider. Though some polishing issues exist in this level, it will be interesting to see what levels come in the future.

Basically most of the marks were polishing issues.

Thanks for the top-quality review Random. Like I said in the chat, the polishing errors occurred at random and were not there in previous beta releases but appeared out of nowhere instead. I admit that the story should have been less focused on small little tasks, but I had changed the way the story progressed multiple times along the way and this seemed to flow the best. As for the material choice, I think it's just personal preference so I respect your opinion. I also kept the stone in the level to keep the flow of materials consistent throughout. The minor errors were a result of what appears to be me pushing the thermo over its limits. Apparently, it can really destroy the wording in speech bubbles.

Yup. In this level the end result is the same, however, you have to get there a little differently with varying speech bubbles along the way. All the levels will have this morality feature.

Will try this tonight pal.

Behold, CyberSora finally giving a review!

The Good
Gameplay was short, sadly. However, I loved your storyline! The whole inFAMOUS feel of the Kama system was excellent, and I was excited to see more of it (until the scoreboard came up). As for the visuals, I think you nailed them perfectly. There were moments where I thought the level was empty, though, so try to add more things in your next one. Maybe a bush or forest?

The Bad
Pretty much the empty-ness in the level. Not only that, but some parts were ridiculously hard to conquer. Like the tree where the stool is; the branch was too low, so I had to jump multiple times to get on the higher branch. And the first place where you meet the girl about Africa: not only did that confuse me about the plot, but it was a little bit difficult trying to get out when a front layer of gas could kill you if you plane-switched by accident.

The Mystery
That girl. I NEED TO KNOW WHY SHE WAS DOWN THERE, AND WHO SHE IS! I'm determined to find out, even though I think you're just using it as a secret to tease us of the next level. :kz:

Overall, :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3. Excellent job Woodbury.

Cyber...I'm shocked at your reviewing capabilities!

Since the good parts make me feel all warm and bubbly inside, I'll just comment on the bad areas.

I don't really know what you mean by empty-ness, I assume you're referring to the lack of things to do in most areas and not the aesthetics? I completely agree that there could be more, but that dang thermo, it gets me every time. About the tree, you had trouble climbing it? Silly Cyber, you're meant to grab on to the material conveniently placed under the branch for you to "climb" up. If you needed help getting up on the tree in the first place, you just swing from grabbing on to the tire swing. (I assume you already knew that part though.) Anyways, I'm glad you enjoyed it, there's a lot more Moral Moments to come.

Yes, yes you do. Do you accept PM's about secrets hidden in the level that I guarantee no one knows about yet? Val and Cory would've just given up like they did in the beta when they couldn't figure out how to jump off a rock.

Woodbury, awesome level! Rather than going through and taking and pointing out all the awesome stuff that would take forever to do, I'm just going to give you a bit of constructive criticism.

So, one quick thing is the bird issue I heard about, lol. Not sure how your logic works exactly, but whenever everything is triggered to be on fire when you come out of the pipes, you could have the thing the bird spins on made of dissolve, which would be triggered with the fire, and then the bird could fall through the thin layer between the two thick. Not worth republishing and losing your plays, just stuff to think about in future. But the bird was a good idea to put in, and very unique. Most people skip out or dont think of things like that.

Second. there was some difficult platforming in this. Not the hard/challenging type, but difficult/annoying type. I died from electricity and getting squashed a few times going down the well, and it was a pain getting up the rock mountain at the end. I understand the world is going through post apocalypse or something and thats why its like that (its how itd would be in real life after all), but for sackboy its a bit too hard to maneuver . Again don't republish, but I suggest letting up a bit in your next level.

Lastly, I get that stuff breaks and goes haywire under full thermo, speech bubbles especially. Dont sweat this stuff, if you republish it could make it worse. Just keep it how it is, it all made sense to me when playing the game. Just remember to stock your next level with 20 emitters and 10 extra sensors in case you have to add in sections of level to fight full thermo.

And great job, ***** <3. You really put a lot of work into this.

Wow. Thanks so much for all the feedback that helps a lot, especially that last suggestion about starting out with extra emitters and sensors!

Believe it or not, the bird isn't on a wheel, I emitted it. I used a neat little trick I learned from one of Spark151's levels I mentioned in the OP and adapted it to create the bird. Sadly, I was able to fix the bird issue in an update I had ready (along with a few others that may not have been noticed yet and didn't effect the overall gameplay), but everyone started responding to the thread right at that time and I didn't want to lose everyone's plays. I know in the future to double check everything, I just got so sick of going through my entire level to test it and the speech bubble errors don't show up until I publish and download that version. Anyways, thanks again for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Hey Woodbury. Tryed your level and it is the best one I think youve made. Loved the look of it, the characters, the design and the story too had me hooked, cant wait to see whats happening next, top marks. As you may know from most of my levels, Im not much of a logic guy, not because I dont like it but mainly because I dont have much of a clue how to do things so I was quite impressed with how you did things in the level, loved the bird flying around! As for reading other peoples FB about areas in the level being tricky, then I can see where some are coming from, as I died in some areas but its like everything, practice. All in all pal, a great level, surely a spotlight and, as said before, looking forward to the next, great stuff.

Oh by the way, did you manage to get to the end of Treehouse Adventure.

It's definitely a hassle going through a level so many times, but I think it ultimately pays off in the long run.

As for your stealthily edited post:

I honestly believe you, but sadly I can't reveal my secrets to anyone who tells me they did something another person posted previously. Doing so would be like handing a single baby in a crowd of one million babies a lollipop, which would disrupt the global lollipop balance, possibly adding to world hunger.

Thanks Nys.

I know some of you have noticed, but in case some of you haven't yet I thought I'd let you know that the opening scene from Part II is on the community moon for a limited time. It's extremely short, as it's just the lead in to the whole level, but hopefully it will keep you satisfied until the full version is out.

Hah! I found your secret bubble stash.
Is that the only secret or do I have to look further?

Possibly... Don't worry, Aunt Samantha will answer all of your questions in the next level.

Crisis
By WoodburyRaider
World War III: Part I

DESCRIPTION: (4/10) The description is very basic and could do with more detail.
SETTING: (14/20) The level is set in the private property of an old codger who sits in a tree. The level also features a small sewer section, a pond and some old ruins.
LEVEL LAYOUT: (14/20) The layout of the level is rather simple but it fits the type of gameplay that is on offer in terms of going back and forward with items etc.
STORY & CHARACTERS: (17/20) The story involves the outbreak of world war III although you would never know it from the way the level begins. The player character starts the level having apparently robbed the house of an old man who is sitting up in a tree. What a charmer! From this point on the player must undertake some fetch tasks and has the choice of being good or bad towards some of the other characters in the level. This then leads to some kind of crisis where the player meets mysterious characters who hint at what is to come in future levels.
VISUAL: (14/20) Nice and tidy visuals with good detail on some things such as trees and characters etc but a lot of empty areas in other places although I am guessing this had more to do with the thermo than a lack of creativity from Woodbury. I especially liked the bird that swoops down and the detail of the sewer ladder. Those were excellent. It is little things like this that I enjoy in levels.
AUDIO: (15/20) Nice audio to complement the visuals and the music fitted the level nicely as well.
LOGIC: (16/20)There are some nice logic moments in this level. The sewer puzzle is excellent as is the draining pond.
GAMEPLAY: (15/20) The level consists mainly of fetch and carry tasks and some jumping sections.
STAND OUT MOMENT: I liked the worker James Pond who was running around on fire although I thought this would have been a perfect moment to have used the morality system. Putting out the fire and helping him would be a good act and leaving him to burn would be evil etc.
REPLAY VALUE: Yes. I have played through this three times already although this was mainly to discover how to get good points rather than bad! The level was no less enjoyable through repeated plays.
FINAL THOUGHTS: This is a strange little level that grew on me over time. I am not sure about the morality system as not bringing the old man a stool should not mean I am bad. Now if I had taken a chainsaw and chopped the tree down with him in it then fair enough but not bringing him a stool is not too bad in my view. What is the old geezer doing up in the tree in the first place anyway? Is he some kind of peeping tom? I hope WoodburyRaider expands on this cool gimmick in the next level which I definitely hope is forthcoming. The story is rather bizarre at times but at least there is a story and I hope along with the morality system that this will be expanded on in the next instalment which I will look forward to playing.

FINAL SCORE: 109/150

Wow thanks for that comprehensive feedback MrObycyek! Again, I made the level thread without the F4F because I started my own level reviewing thread where I give it out anyways. That being said, I still enjoy reading everyone's opinions to find out how I can improve.

I'll try to cover everything you mentioned in order for easy reading.

Description: I kept this vague because it is a level series. Since there is no simple way to neatly space out your description with line breaks, I decided to go with the clean look and not keep it cluttered. Looking back, I suppose I could have added "This is where it all begins," under what I have currently, but this sort of description I came up with after the fact. I don't really how the description affects your review, as I prefer to judge on the level alone, but that might just be me.
Setting: Not much to reply to here. Was it in need of more corner editing? If you can explain your rating more and not simply the level's setting in general, it would be greatly appreciated.
Level Layout: Same as before, what exactly affected the rating?
Story & Characters: You make it sound so...mysterious. It makes me want to play my level.
Visuals: I suppose I'm defending my level here more than critiquing your review of it, but I guess that's what I shouldbe doing since it is my level. Again, was the small amount of emptyness alone what caused you to mark off six points?
Audio/Logic/Gameplay: Yeah, same idea as I mentioned previously about the rating.
Stand Out Moment: Believe it or not, I had also thought of this idea beforehand even having built another area to the left where you turn a pipe to dump water on the guy. Sadly, my thermo wouldn't allow me to keep the scene in the level.

All in all, it sounds like you enjoyed my level which is really what I'm here to do. I strongly disagree with some of your critiques, but of course, I'm only defending my level. Thanks again for the review and I hope you continue to look forward to my series.

I played it and it was very well made and thoughtout. I also downloaded the Catastrophe intro and I think when the real one comes out it will be amazing. Nice work!2011-08-14 18:45:00

Thanks man. Each level is going to have a lot of little things that have never been seen before on PSP like my little birdy in this first level. My goal is to get these levels done as quickly as possible so that I can spend all my time on the final level of the series. Let's just say I have something in store for you all in the end that will blow your minds.

Heh... that's exactly the same thing I want to do with my Pirates level series.
Anyway congrats on your spotlight!

Ok, I give this :star::star::star::star::star: and a <3.
The only thing I think you could have improved is more morale moments.

Thanks man! As I'm sure you can imagine, I was pinched for more thermo, but the next few levels will have plenty of moral moments.

Hello WoodburyRaider. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you but I try to restrict my time on forums generally and I have been rather busy.

This review system I have come up with is still very much a work in progress and I decided I would test it out on your level. Lucky you! Please bear with me while I iron out the kinks in it. The hardest aspect for me is the rating system. I am still undecided whether or not to include this in future feedback and stick simply to some specific comments. Putting ratings can of course raise problems. If I praise a certain aspect such as the visual side and then only rate it 14/20 then obviously it raises the question why I did not rate it 17,18,19 or 20 etc. I did enjoy the visuals in your level but felt there was not enough in the level. I also felt things such as the grass and trees in the level were very similar to a lot of other levels I have seen here recently.

As for the setting well this does not cover things such as materials or corner editing etc. Things such as corner editing, sticker work and material choice all come under my visual category.

As for the description I believe this is every bit as important as the level itself. A good description can give anyone browsing through new levels an idea of the kind of level they are going to play. I do not think it takes anything away from the level or spoils it to the player. You want as many people as pssible to play your level a good description could be the difference between them taking a chance on it or skipping it and choosing something else. Wizard's Spire by Blackwolfe, Curses! by SalieriAAX, The Frozen Kingdom by Leonard and Attachment by Sackboy7789 are all good examples in my opinion of how a description should be done. I wanted to play all those levels just from reading the description of them.

Everyone is different of course but this is just my opinion.

Also I should explain the overall score. Anyone who scores 100 or more will always get a 5/5 rating and a heart from me. I actually very rarely give anyone less than a 4 for their levels (providing some effort has gone into it!) as I know how hard it is to create something and put it out there for people to play. Any level that has clearly had a lot of time and effort put into it while always get at least a four from me. Most of the time I just look for little moments that stand out in a level. Platform sections do not really interest me and I am more interested in adventure/rpg type levels and my reviews will no doubt show this but hopefully I can recognize it and still be impartial and fair towards platform levels. If anyone has any problems with my feedback then much like with my levels, I welcome feedback on it. You clearly put a lot of time and effort into this level and I hope this is the start of a series from you Woodbury Raider.

WOW! The look of this level was so pretty. It really felt scale and I'm sad you thought of the tree tire better and before me.
I was happy with the level that I just made, but now after playing yours I realize how much more I need to grow to be a pro like you. Great job!!

I can't wait to play it again!
