GameMaker - YoYo Games - Make PC games without Programming Knowledge!

Archive: 24 posts

I came across Game Maker (http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/windows), YoYo Games PC game maker. It looked interesting, because when I was 11, I did this computer class called Scratch Programming. I saw they had a Lite version. I'm thirteen, and have aspirations to become a tech engineer or computer programmer. I wanna get the Lite version. Should I? Computer Programming geeks, discuss .2011-07-30 23:32:00

I suggest you try Unity, it'll be hard to learn how to program it, but you can start with environmental design before you get to the programming part like I am. 2011-07-31 00:48:00

there are a lot of "game makers" for different genres. I use adventure game studio, scumm vm, and point n click dk for making point and click adventures. Although since LBP came out, my pc gaming kind of went to the back burner. I was just looking at the "lite" version and it is indeed lite. Maybe nice to try it out and learn a few things with it.2011-07-31 01:52:00

eh... if you want to get even close to engineer or programmer, you'll be better off on forums with actual programmers and engineers, this place isn't going to get you anywhere either if you need help.

If you're planning to become a programmer/tech engineer, do NOT use GameMaker. It will not teach you anything about programming, it'll teach you how to drag and drop. I fell for GameMaker a really long time ago, thinking the exact same thing. Now I regret wasting $20 on it.

Now, don't get me wrong, it's okay for making games but it will not teach you anything.

I am learning Unity also as part of my course.
Would love to help you out if need be.
Also, can you model game assets?

Yeah, GameMaker really teaches you nothing. Though that Unity thing sounds pretty neato, def will give it try later in the future.2011-07-31 08:20:00

I've used this before, way back in an ICT class.

I won the race to create a game.

Use Unity, not gamemaker as it teaches you nothing. I have a friend that's making a 3D Sonic game of some sort with it. Looking good it does... 2011-07-31 14:07:00

Exactly. All Gamemaker teaches you is... well, Logical thinking - similar to LBP. It all a case of "Oh! So if this does this, then putting this there will do...Yeah."

If you want to be a real game programmer, learn Unity, C++, what have you.. And then come to terms with your limitations. Most one person independent game makers don't make it out the front door. You have to have the drive to finish a project. If you don't, I suggest finding some friends who will draw sprites, 3d model, level design, code, or do whatever other odd jobs you don't have the time for, and make a freeware game for the android marketplace, or some games site. If it picks up, maybe consider a bigger project. Maybe consider charging for it. Maybe consider courting with XBLA or PSN... Those are your options, son. Think it over.2011-08-01 05:36:00

Firstly, the first thing in Unity I made:

Seeing as I am still beginning, what should I do next? Work more on the environmental stuff or maybe experiment with coding/level design?

Hello. I am Senor Peanut. I am interested in such things. Some of you may know me as an RPG obsessed evil warlord, and you would be right. However, I decided that I should not waste my stories on projects that would not receive any real recognition or further my resume at all.

On the 15th of this month, I will be going to school for game design. Meanwhile, it is my dream to start up an indie game company of sorts. While I have two or three other people lined up with me, the thing is that we need more. At the moment we are trying to decide between 2d and 3d games, as well as which engine, and whether I should be locked in a cage or not... still, I thought I should let any of you know in case you were interested in joining said group of misfits.

In case you are wondering what game we'd be making... I want said group to be labeled as Evil Peanut Games... and, seeing as such, I do believe that the first project should be about an Evil Peanut, to be featured in the logo forevermore, doing his evil stuff to take over the world. However, that is merely the paranoid delusions of one escaped lunatic, do not take it as a word of law.

Would anyone potentially be interested? If so, just remember... I'm a peanut with a mustache.

I would say I'm interested but quite frankly, I'm not anywhere near a level where I can competently do stuff. :/ Maybe on a later project but for now...

If anything you're at a better level then we are at the moment Well, kinda, sorta, judging by your tree.

So ya, since we're learning, it may be better to be in a group. Or maybe not. I'm just saying. :kz:

Good point, but it'll probably be a few months before I can properly do map design/environment design, maybe your 2nd project?
