The Power of Mother Nature - share your pics!

So last night, I'm sitting at my ps3 and BOOM! Huge flash of pink and white lightning outside my window with an immediate clap of explosive thunder louder than anything I've ever heard. My floor shook and I stood up extremely starteled. I went outside to investigate to see if the house had been hit but couldn't see much in the dark. Figured I'd find it in the morning. A fe moments later my mother screams to me from the basement that we have water leaking from at least two places in the water pipes and it's starting to flood the basement. So we get the water main to the house shut off and begin to move wet boxes and try and clean it up as best we can.

At this point I decided to run to the store to get some bottled water since we'd not have any in the house for a few days. As I'm driving down the street in front of my house I noticed large clumps of dirt and grass in the road. So I backed up my car and turned the headlights to my front yard. Down the length of the yard to the edge of the street I saw large trenches with what looked like shredded sticks all over the place. I got out of the car and walked up to the tree where the trenches led and discovered that the tree had been hit by lighting and it had exploded most of the roots of the tree, throwing the dirt and sod into the street and completely shredding the roots.

Also discovered this morning arc burns on our pipes and pinholes where the current had melted the copper.

Shocking!

So have you ever had a natural disaster or force of nature in your life that left you in amazement at the power in these natural processes? I'm a lot more respectful of lighting now.

Amazing that the lightning just carved through the dirt like that.

My physics teachers always said that lightning just tends to ignore everything you think about electricity.

Had a lightnin' bolt strike near my house(s) twice: The first time an entire tree fell down and almost hit my neighbor's house. The tree was huge - luckily, so was my neighbor's yard. Had a whole gigaton of firewood after that.

Second time was a few days ago, another strike hit another tree near my uncle's house (they live four doors down from us). The majority of the tree didn't fall, but said tree was probably the tallest in the area and now it's a giant twig. It's sad. :B

It amazes me how strong Dark Matter is.
Fortunatly I never had a problem with the weather but I hear about a giant forest fire in Slave Lake and how it destroyed a whole community.
^^ That amazes me because how easy they start and how hard they are to put out.

& to think that people can survive a lightning strike (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Sullivan)!

Lets see... I didn't have anything THAT major, but one time in the Spring, we had a bad storm, and we got holes in our ROOF from hail... Problem was we did not know about the holes until a heavy rain storm the next week. So, we had a lot of water leaking in the house.2011-07-28 21:41:00

Wind caused one of the massive trees on the perimeter of our yard to fall over.
Made the loudest crack I've ever heard, then Thud.

I remember when I was a kid and I lived in England for a time, living through this;

I remember it so vividly because we got about a week off school!

At least hurricanes haven't hit PR since a few years but we're expecting one next week. Hopefully it won't be that strong!

sorry to hear about the water. Those pics are cool though. Never seen it travel thru the roots like that. I've seen lightning do some amazing things. We were driving down the interstate one time and it was storming pretty good and lightning struck the car in front of us. Melted the tires but everyone inside was ok.

I was living in N. Carolina when Hurricane Hugo hit. The devastation was unreal. We had huge trees in our yard that were toppled and toss around like toothpicks.
I also lived in the Texas Panhandle and use to do storm chasing with my dad. I've seen many tornadoes and find them both fascinating and terrifying.

Actual lighning tends to obey everyting we know about electricity i.e. its full of quantum weirdness.

Anyway as a canoeist I am always amazed by the power of water although I ever underestimate it. I also find the conection that I gain from this sport with nature almost magical. Believe me seeing these phenominons is incredible however it is only by being inside them and being able to feel how they move and the forces behind them that you can begin to comprehend such an event or feature. Seeing and doging entire trees washing down a river really gives a clue about the ride ahead.

All of these examples are terrifying. You know something's bad when you hear that kind of clap of thunder/lightning. I'm so glad your house didn't burn, even though you had damage.

However, personally, I see the ravages of time on my face to be the worst disaster I've ever experienced.
