Yah, Ninty is getting DESPERATE.

And then... 20 free games for early adopters? This... Nintendo is scared.

Holy wow, that is an incredible price drop. But completely understandable; I mean, 700,000 in 4 months? Thats pretty horrible. With the vita only ten bucks cheaper then the first 3ds price, and with nothing all that special about it, it will be interesting to see just how more popular non-nintendo people are.2011-07-28 18:56:00

Over $100 worth of free games? Yeah, this is definitely a desperate move.2011-07-28 19:04:00

I honestly half expect Sony to give announce the Vita coming pre-loaded with some PSP games now...

It won't matter to me though, I'm still going to get a Vita... because I have those games already, and the 3DS doesn't really have any games yet that entice me...

Apart from the high price maybe they need to do more work convincing people this is a new system not yet another slight revision of the DS or maybe the rise of mobile phone gaming has stolen the lucrative casual crowd.

Over $100 worth of free games? Yeah, this is definitely a desperate move.

Its to stop the people that paid the initial price from raging about the price going down so much so fast. People buying at the new price don't get them (see also the original xbox.)

Guess the same doesn't work for 3DS.

Besides, no one got the 3DS because it has terrible battery life, a horrible selection of games currently, and trippy graphics. imo.

You see, I probably would have bought one, until my mum said I couldn't because it'd 'damage my eyes'. By the looks of things, I'm glad she did, I can't see this lasting very long.2011-07-29 09:29:00

It was the same for the DS;
For the 1st year or so there were no games for it, and everyone just wrote it off as a gimmick.
Then, slowly but surely, quality titles started getting released - and the DS now has a pretty solid line-up of games.

The 3DS is a pretty nifty little gadget - MUCH more powerful than the DS. By the time VITA is out, more of the "core" nintendo titles will be out aswell - Metal Gear Solid 3DS, Super Mario, Mario Kart etc etc - the usual suspects.

This is actually encouraging news - as it means Nintendo are getting seriously competitive, which can only be good news for the consumer.

Of course, I'll be getting a Vita aswell... I'm just saying - speaking as an actual 3DS owner, I'm still very much enjoying it and look forward to what's coming out.

Not surprising. At all. The launch titles were the worst to date. Not only that, there wasn't a single game by Nintendo launched when it came out. Nintendo hasn't officially made any new games on the 3DS yet either, just a single remake and 3rd party games.

3DS sales are failing, Wii sales are as well. I'm very disappointed cause I bought this system in March and waited 3 MONTHS until I finally got OoT 3D, the only game worth buying...which I ALREADY HAD on GC. It is also the only 3DS game I own.

I played Ocarina to absolute death back in the day - I can still remember every dungeon & location in the game, so there's not really a point buying it for me (despite how good I hear it is for the 3DS);

Likewise with MGS3 - one of my all time favourite games that I've already played to death (I think I'll still be getting it for the 3DS though - if it has multiplayer/metagame stuff like Peacewalker)

I heard that they held back the Nintendo titles in order to give the 3rd party devs time to play catch up; because it seems to be that Nintendo are the only ones who can really get the most out of their machines - which they always do on the Mario titles - and once they are released - nothing can really top it.

Nintendo has only made small steps in what they added to the DS. Sony is making a giant step with multiple new amazing features that make sense.

Original DS to DS Lite:
Pro: More reliable
Con: Can't play GameBoy Color games

DS Lite to DSi:
Pro: Camera
Con: No more GameBoy slot

DSi to DSi XL:
Pro: Uh... Bigger screen to see the crappy graphics worse?
Con: No longer fits into your pocket...

DSi XL to 3DS:
Pro: 3D Pictures
Con: 3D is only good for games with good graphics... xP

Thus, Nintendo has only been taking steps back.

I agree with this ^

I too own a 3DS and am playing it a LOT! And once the good games come out I'll be playing it.. More. and I'm sure said games will boost sales. Suer smash bros for sure! That game guarantees sales. and lots of other games too. So yeah. I doubt it will "won't last" lol.

By the way, I did as your signature said. I re-read your post and imagined groundskeeper Willie reading it. I lol'd.

I think the *main* problem with the 3Ds... lies in the name.

Sony won't have any trouble with PSVita... because the public can TELL its a totally new system.

But...3DS? I have run into a large number of people that think of it as a DS with Glasses-less 3D... and see no point in getting one, since they already have a DS

Desperate move by Nintendo on this matter, basically not selling for the reason Val said above.

The only legit games comming to this/or are already on it are LoZ, SF4, StarFox64, RE, and Megaman Legends 3 (Now Canceled), in which almost all of those are remakes.

Besides, gotta save up for the Vita. FTW!

It's worse than you think, this being a new generation of hardware was explained to fume in a previous 3DS topic and here we are 3 months later doing it again.

3DS... 3-DS, the 3DS is still a DS and it looks the same as a normal DS for the most part
so it's not a new Nintendo handheld system yet, just a upgrade like DS to DS-lite, ETC~ *mew

3DS games will not work on any previous DS it's a new generation of hardware.

See also Gameboy Advance games not playing on Gameboy, Xbox 360 games not playing on Xbox, PS3 games not playing on PS2 etc.

Oh... well that sucks,
means most likely the new pokemon games will be on it from now on... lame...
guess i'll have to buy a 3DS sooner or later then :/ *mew

Ahh forgot about that, but anyways what you quoted don't say how 3DS is better then DS?
But what Swweet told me >stronger graphics< explains it to be fine.

I've been looking at EVERYTHING... and I've come to a fairly inclusive opinion... the 3DS isn't going to do as well as the DS, no matter what.

Heres my Great Wall of Text from www.serebiiforums.com

Sure the 3DS has a lower price point, but is it already a bit too late?

Earlier this week, Nintendo announced its huge 3DS price drop, as a last ditch attempt to boost sales... and although that will surely win some costumers over, its not necessarily the price holding the causal audience back. Back in 2005 we saw the same problem with the DS, and yet there was no price drop.. it was only once the DS lite came out, did the system start beating the PSP in world-wide sales.

While this certainly can be attributed towards the price drop, it could also be attribute to other things as well... most namely the touch screen, and advertisement. When the original model of DS launched, it was an ugly brick... and even the PSP looked better physically, but Nintendo also promised that the GBA would still see support, as a seperate line of systems. This held back many potential owners, simply because they expected a good amount of games to come to the GBA still. Since the PSP was a totally new endeavor for SONY, consumers went for it... even with the ridiculously high price-point.

...

Now, then how come the DS became the juggernaut it is today?

Simple, it changed, to meet the public's attention. Nintendo cut support for the Game Boy line, and started making the DS the only way to play new Nintendo, on the go. They made the aesthetic much better, and they made it a more compact beauty as well... it all helped get the public's eye, but it wasn't this that won it the "War"... it wasn't the GAMES... it was the age-targeting.

You see, if the PSP had been targeted at grannies and moms, with Games AND Casual software, it would have won, due to it being a wholesome product in the Public's eye, and easily worth the money for them. However, the Ds was the one that grabbed that audience, and the PSP was left to reign in Japan, where EVERYBODY was a gamer.

Now, we see some sort of repeat in some, but not all ways with the 3DS... and because of this, it has lost the public's attention. Not because of no games, but because the Casual audience isn't there anymore. Back when the DS lite released, the casual games and price made it the ultimate holiday gift to give, but now that has changed... with the mainstream rise of the iPod Touch.

This leaves the 3DS in a awkward situation, for sure, but it still would have sold better, if the Price was lower... right?

Maybe, but not nearly enough of a boost to make up for the losses in profit for each sale. IT isn't just the price holding people back, its the hardware itself. With each and every 3DS game coming with a warning at the bottom, it scares off a good chunk of parents from buying it for their kids... and when they DO buy it, it has hardware issues galore! DS games look hideous on the new system, and the screens easily scratched... add in the act that currently there are only a few goof "Family" games to buy... and you get a much more limited appeal, with your already shrunken audience. And then there is still the price. Why pay even 170 dollars, when an 8GB iPod touch is only $30 more? Surely the games are JUST as good for the casual gamer on an iPod, and they are not to mention cheaper... and then it also has tons of great Apps too!

So... where those that leave the 3DS? The niche audience, the Nintendo-fanatics... the gamers. And gamers would rather go for the better System, even if its a bit more expensive. The Vita is ALSO an almost guaranteed hit with the Casuals... why? because its also caters to the casuals, with more than just games... take, for example, the fact the Vita will have Backwards Compatibility with Android Apps. If someone goes to a store, and sees a Vita with a good family-friendly library consisting of Little Deviants and LittleBigPlanet... as well as Android, it could easily become the next iPad, and wipe the 3DS off the map.

Of course, there is still much time for Nintendo to pull even more out of its hat... but so can Sony. The tide might be shifting, but we don't know how long it may last... all I ask is for you to try and understand why the 3DS may fail, and why you may not see as big of a splash for your new hardware as you may have liked...

If any good could come from this for 3DS, its the fact that both systems will be trying there best to make GOOD games, and for gamers... we all win.

That's where the problem lies. They haven't tried hard enough to convince people that this is there next-gen console, and the public opinion is that it's yet another upgrade to the DS when it isn't. Heck, the intro to the adverts even uses the same as the DS one until the dump the '3' in at the last second.2011-08-02 14:55:00

I own a 3ds, and I love it. It is by far the best mobile gaming device I have ever used, but their marketing has been horrid, and the games selection is slim. Hopefully they will release more 3d classics, as Excitebike has gained new life in 3D, and OOT is better than ever. (oot is not a 3d classic title, but whatever) and I am hoping that Super Mario 3d will breath some life into my little handheld, and I wont be left in the dust like the Virtual Boy adopters.2011-08-02 15:10:00
