Platformers vs. minigames

Archive: 17 posts

Just a brief topic of discussion for any interested parties. Do LBP players have an overwhelming preference for platform-style levels, compared to minigame-style levels?

Of course the game is essentially built on a running and jumping mechanic, and the Story mode focuses on this type of gameplay. I've looked at many of the spotlighted levels on LBPC and every one I've played is a platformer. So where do minigames fit in? I liked a lot of the ones that shipped with the game, but I've come across very few published minigames which are great quality and fun to play.

My take is that, whilst the platform levels are great fun and allow for a narrative, there?s much less scope for original gameplay. Almost all of the spotlighted levels (and others) are superb, incredibly polished and on a par with the Story mode, but it's very rare to see the same degree of innovation that minigames allow for, which I think is a shame in some respects. The physics engine is so good that possibilities are essentially endless, but does this matter if players have an overall preference for platforming?

I?m a big fan of the minigame format, and a quick blast on something silly and fun is, for me, much more entertaining than a pleasant but ?seen it all before? stroll through a nice-looking platformer. In Create mode, I definitely prefer the opportunity to ?think outside the box? provided by the minigame format, hence my own level creations, and my brother?s level (Gorilla Curling by KenBlayton).

Any thoughts / comments?

I see your point, but I still can't stay away from platformers. So simple yet so fun and intuitive. But I can't blame anyone for liking mini-games more.2008-12-17 21:48:00

Is youtube the only place you look for levels? I know there are quite a few minigames out there.2008-12-17 22:14:00

Maybe it's the case that there are far fewer minigames in proportion to platformers, and so people just don't come across them as often when trawling through levels.

This and other forums have a list of spotlighted and outstanding levels, which are almost never minigame style, but that could be just the case that it's harder to impress people with a minigame than a platformer. I've had some great feedback from my own levels, but that doesn't necessarily mean they would be widely appreciated.

Or maybe minigames are just a rare breed in general.

Depends on how complex the game is.
Like a pinball stage is what I'd consider a mini-game. Fun stuff.

I'm a fan of pinball, and there are some quality pinball levels out there. I'd call it a minigame. I don't really consider it original though, although there's obviously some great and innovative tech behind the scenes making it all happen.2008-12-18 11:56:00

Its much easier to throw together a decent platformer level then it is to make a good minigame from what I've seen. Alot of minigames have a good concept but poor execution.2008-12-18 13:01:00

I agree Rabid-Coot - I may have a go at making a strict platformer in the future but I think it'll take a lot to make it stand out amongst all the others. It seems easier to impart uniqueness to a minigame, but like you say, so few ideas are well executed. My own levels are short minigames, but my brother and I probably put in as much time to make them fun, and good quality, as any decent platformer out there.2008-12-18 17:30:00

Yeah Rabid-Coot. Most mini-games are clever, like Connect 4. But really clunky and not fun to play. But PacMan is good.2008-12-18 18:47:00

AAARRHHHHH I had the idea the other week to make connect 4 and just haven't got around to making it yet
Some one beat me to it then?????

Also did you see the reversi game on MM's picks
It looked awesome

I love mini games and have tried making a few ( well most of my levels have a mini game concept actually)
I've made pool (but actually haven't played it with anyone lol)
Also My LBPC puzzle that is timed (that no one has really tried lol)
I've made a mini fishing game but didn't finish it yet as it isn't great with the camera angles and I might have to start it again one day

And for the life of me I can't remember the rest lol

I'll try out your levels when I'm next on dorien. I was also impressed with the Othello (Reversi), would be really interested to know how they did it.2008-12-18 20:45:00

I'm not really sure... I really seem to like both. Minigames I seem to enjoy, but Platformers last longer (and usually have more of a classic run/jump challange). I guess it just depends. Either way, the better the quality, the better it is

I do find it easier to create minigames... Sort of. They take less time to make, especially if you get your idea straight away. Unless you, of course, have no idea how to get it to work . But what do I know? I'm in an idea block recently anyway.

Placed in spoilers incase it's considered advertising...
I did make a minigame that I personally think is okay but... you be the judge if you want to.

I think one of the hardest aspects of creating mini-games is developing a scoring system that rewards the player's skill.
