Stop Level Badges from appearing faded?

Archive: 7 posts

I'm trying to make a level badge for my level, but when I take the picture, it looks perfect. When I set it as the level's badge, though, it becomes faded and crappy-looking. I've tried turning the lighting way down in the level when I take the picture, but that makes objects and stickers almost impossible to see.

Is there a sure way to make a good, non-faded level badge?

It's weird when I was making a level badge yesterday when I first set it as a badge on my moon it looked faded, but after resetting the console it became more vibrant and that's how it looks when I published it as well.2011-07-27 18:20:00

They tend to look a bit better when published.2011-07-27 20:09:00

When I'm making stickers that don't need to feature sackbots or any mesh objects/decos (so I'm painting with materials exclusively) I'll change the fog color to black and turn the fog all the way down in the level so it doesn't wash out any colors and then I'll make the picture out of neon material so that I don't have to worry about it being too dark. Where I need colors that I can't get with just neon, I'll turn down the brightness on the neon a bit and slap one or more box lights/leds on it to add in other hues. It takes a bit of trial and error to get the colors right, but I can get much brighter, more vibrant pictures that way. I use these a lot for costuming but there's no reason it wouldn't work for level badges too.2011-07-27 20:30:00

This happened even in LBP1...it's clearly deliberate...but I can't imagine what purpose it serves. You just need to quit the game and restart...the faded badge is just for that session, it doesn't look that way when published...and it's not a persistent thing.

Perhaps it's stored in memory for the current session so it's compressed to save space, and loaded from the hard drive in subsequent sessions?

If this is correct I'd guess that the fading is caused by reducing the colour depth of the image during compression.

No way, it would have to be using the worse compression algorithm on earth to get a result this bad...it's a pretty low-res crappy image to begin with (and LBP1 was half the resolution). This game does a lot of strange things I'd love to know the reason for.
