Color of Sound- SPOTLIGHTED - PICS

Archive: 21 posts

Hi everybody,

I would like to present you today one of the first levels i created (but not the least, i think).

Level name: Color of Sound
Creator: Takelow (ID)
Location: near France

Overall presentation:
The level take place in a world called "Musicolor". It was a peacefull world, where sounds and colors (represented by alived stars) lived in harmony. But the creator became a little bit crazy and started to capture colors (stars). At the start, you will found a world that is far closer to music than colour. The aim of your sackboy is here to deliver the colours and restore the harmony in this world.
The level was initially designed for ONE PLAYER. But it is playable in multi.

Custom content: There is a lot of custom content in this level. And big ones. Would you see a living giant piano, a giant littlebigStratocaster and more? Test the level!

This is quite an impressive level with very nice design. The instruments are great, and the LittleBigStrat is gorgeous!

There are a few points in the level that I was able to see over the wall, which sorta broke up the feel of the level. The area above the trumpet is one, and above-left of the piano is another.

I was semi-stuck before the piano. Even after I had triggered the switch, it was not clear that something had cleared the way for me because it was occluded by a big, black circle in the foreground. I spent a good five minutes wondering where the heck I was supposed to go =)

And the puzzle early on where you drop into a little area to collect bubbles got me stuck so bad I had to restart the level. Once I was in the tunnel without the circular bit, I could not jump out. A little platform on another plane would probably fix that.

But those are pretty minor annoyances. I really hope you go on to add all the other colors to this level!

really nice art direction. i'm torn on your extreme usage of dark matter. usually i see this as lazy design, but the aesthetic of it works for the level for the most part. i did get stuck in the same place that Trystian mentions above. need a platform there to get out. in general i felt there could be more effort to direct the player as to what they were supposed to do or make it a little more obvious what controls what. i felt much of the time i was just dragging stuff around hoping it would trigger something or trying to grab everything in hopes that it would trigger something. all in all, i enjoyed the level. like i said, fantastic art direction. keep it up!2008-12-18 04:07:00

Hi,

I'm really happy to see i have some comments about this level. It is one of my first but i personnaly loved construct him. I learn a lot with it.
So thank you for your comments and kind words.

There are a few points in the level that I was able to see over the wall, which sorta broke up the feel of the level. The area above the trumpet is one, and above-left of the piano is another.

You right. I made an update to fix this. Thanks a lot!
It also fix a bug in camera at the end of the red star room (when you deliver the star, the background is modified with the red color added and there is a red "fireworks". The cam bug did hide this.).

I was semi-stuck before the piano. Even after I had triggered the switch, it was not clear that something had cleared the way for me because it was occluded by a big, black circle in the foreground. I spent a good five minutes wondering where the heck I was supposed to go =)

Oh, i'm so used with the level that this sequence seemed logical for me. But you right and i removed the big black circle. Thank you again.

And the puzzle early on where you drop into a little area to collect bubbles got me stuck so bad I had to restart the level. Once I was in the tunnel without the circular bit, I could not jump out. A little platform on another plane would probably fix that.

I know this. Actually, this puzzle is the first in which there is clues on the wall to indicate what to do, and when you totally complete it, it give you access to secrets area (with lot of bubbles).
However i'm surprised you need to completely restart the level at this point. A sackboy suicide wouldn't have put you on the previous checkpoint (very near)?

Thank you . Actually, i use very few quantities of dark matter in this level but a lot of rubberized matter.

in general i felt there could be more effort to direct the player as to what they were supposed to do or make it a little more obvious what controls what. i felt much of the time i was just dragging stuff around hoping it would trigger something or trying to grab everything in hopes that it would trigger something.

Oh, i didn't suspect such remark. As i told above, there is actually a lot of clues indicating what to do. These clues are mainly paint on the wall and represent numbers (to indicate an order of actions) or geometrical colored forms (indicating that the same object must be placed at this place).
Nevertheless, I will try to add more evocative clues.

all in all, i enjoyed the level. like i said, fantastic art direction. keep it up!

I'm really pleased and honored to read such things! Thank you again!

Very visually appealing..I'm going to play it now ill be back with my thoughts.......

...alright i played through it and....

WOW. This is one of the most visually appealing levels out there. You definitely have to play through this one to see what I mean. The puzzles are well thought out and there's just so much to do!

This level is a bit lengthy but there are a lot of visuals to keep you entertained.

The only suggestion I have is to make the switches in the "big puzzle room" (the room with the sponges, one way switch, etc.) invisible. You missed a sensor switch and a sound effect.

That's about it though. I'm attracted to levels that concentrate on visuals (if you checked out my abandoned coal mine series you would know this )

5 stars and a heart. (this 5 star and a heart thing sounds redundant, but honestly we have too many amazing creators in LBPC lol. Each one is deserving of 5 stars in their own way ;p)

Visual aspect is one of the thing most important for me when i create a level. I think the visual aspect and search gameplay that could fit. It seems to work for you here and i'm happy!

I totally agree

I added your levels to my "must play and comment" list. I'll comment them later.

i only played through the level once and didn't have a pad of paper with me to take notes. i'm at work right now, but i'll play through it again this weekend and see if i can give you more specifics as to what i meant about directing the player as to what to do and what controls what. i did see that you had shapes on drag able objects that needed to be lined up with shapes on the wall, so i do understand that you were trying to guide the player in this fashion, but felt still that there were places that were a bit too confusing when compared to other areas in the level (i'm all about continuity of design). and it could just be me, which is why i'll see if i can't provide you with more specifics so that you can make a more informed decision about my comment.

I loved the look of this level, and the concept in general. Nice variety, with the puzzle elements. There was plenty of swing and swoop, but not alot of touchy platforming... and some of the object placement with the background/foreground planeshifting seemed a little claustrophobic or unintentionally in the way to where simple jumps were often hampered by a small mound. Overall though, it was very cool - I liked the look all the way up to the metal on the outside - the raining notes were great, but the metal just clashed with the harmony of complimentary colors that the rest of the level had.

The instruments are awesome. The guitar especially.

For some reason I think the background music should be the Savannah music, the one with the adjustable levels, but with a toned down mix where everything except the percussion and melody tracks are turned all the way down. That way it sounds really jazzy and fits the use of color and shape in the level - very minimalist.

One suggestion - I don't know much about arranging and triggering the notes that people do for their music levels, but play a level called Improvisation #1 by Berg443. If you could incorporate triggered notes into your level like that you'd take it to a whole new level and have a guaranteed 5 star hit on your hands.

No critiques really, just my take on it... all around, I like it. Going to try your Egypt level in a bit too.

Hey man, I finally had a chance to play this again and finish it. Here are my thoughts:

Pros:

- The visuals. You are an artist my friend. Your creations are a joy to behold and I am ALWAYS anxious to see what waits around the next corner. Beautiful, beautiful work.

- The color pallette works perfectly here and was very well thought out.

- Custom content!!! Do I need to say more?

- Some cool puzzle elements.

- Overall polish is fantastic!

Cons/Suggestions

- There are few switches visible, not a big deal and easily solved.

- I would have really like it if for the instruments you chose music and tweaked it so only that specific instrument was playing. Example: for the guitar choose the Wilderness music and tweak it so only the guitar is playing. Instead of the music you have for the piano why not use piano notes found in the sound effects. I think doing these things could really push your creation to another level.

- The last room before the trumpet. I found it a bit disorienting. There are so many switches, winches, pistons, moving platforms that I was a litle confused as to where to go and what to grab first lol. Speech bubbles would help but maybe only I found this section a little confusing. It really isn't that much of a probelm but you still might want to think about it

- At the end I did not like the music notes raining down. I think if you had floaty music notes lying on the ground that flew into the air as the player ran through it would be much more rewarding. Music is like the wind and I always visualize music as notes flowing throught the air but maybe that's just me

Overall a relly amazing a level. 5 stars and hearted. I love your work and I hope more people catch on because I think you are a real talent

Hi OCK,

I'm glad you enjoyed my level! Thank you for your kind words and comments.

Your creations are a joy to behold and I am ALWAYS anxious to see what waits around the next corner. Beautiful, beautiful work.

Visual aspect is one of the most important thing i keep in mind when i create. I try to make "beautiful" things, then i combine them in order to construct my level step by step. Then, it is very important for me to have feedbacks on this feature of my levels. And i'm very happy when these feedbacks are good!

Overall polish is fantastic!

I already made a lot of update in that way until i published the level. It increased the overall quality of the level. However, there is still few issue that unsatisfy me. For exemple, sometimes the background appears very pixelisated on screen. And there is nothing that i can don about this...

I would have really like it if for the instruments you chose music and tweaked it so only that specific instrument was playing. Example: for the guitar choose the Wilderness music and tweak it so only the guitar is playing. Instead of the music you have for the piano why not use piano notes found in the sound effects. I think doing these things could really push your creation to another level.

Very, very interesting suggestions! It is definitely something i will do with the next update. Thank you.

Music is like the wind and I always visualize music as notes flowing throught the air but maybe that's just me

You are right. I tried to use floating matters for the notes, but this matter is not easy to sculpt and the results not very good imho. But I'll try to do something interesting in that way.

Overall a relly amazing a level. 5 stars and hearted. I love your work and I hope more people catch on because I think you are a real talent

Thank you a lot. Reading and answering your reviews is always a pleasure

OK THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!!!!
You can cheat the whole level with the jetpack. It's not like i wanted to do this but at the jetpack part i grabbed it after i did the puzzle and than you could just fly away with it... I hope you understand.

Yeah, you gotta search "@takelow". Best way to search for levels is to search by the username, with an "@" symbol in front of them. finds their levels everytime.2009-02-15 13:35:00
