PS3 Life Span?

Archive: 22 posts

Hrrmm...i know there are a pair of other PS3 topics up, but i didn't want to thread-jack so...

To all the other sackthings out there, what would you say the average life-span of a PS3 is, anyways? i've had mine since LBP1 came out (actually got the bundle pack just for LBP), it'S never given me any real static...i keep it relatively clean...

But recently...saints alive but the cooling fan sounds like a bleeding Harrier Jump Jet, it'S just shockingly loud. i suppose if the time has come to make the jump to a new one, well...that'D be a problem cash-wise, really, so we're hoping it'S not that.

Saa...it'S time to bck-up my data finally, i imagine.

Well i got mine in 2008, it lasted a year before the diskreader broke, sony fixed it for free, kept it untill last christmas, where i traded it in, and got a PS3 slSlim for half price, 2011-07-26 10:28:00

It varies based on Model, level of use and the environment it is in.2011-07-26 14:21:00

i'd say the area it's in is pretty normal. Dry, not too close to other really hot things, dusty, but we try to keep the PS3 clear and clear.

i'm just afraid it'll go belly up before i have a chance to back up the save game data on my one now. (Though, truth be told, i don't know anything about transferring data, either...). It is obnoxiously loud, though....like can't hear the TV level loud...really...what the fun?

Had mine since Q4 2007, just YLOD an hour ago...

For a Fat 60GB, it lasted quite well. (Even through the Apocolyps3)

Sorry yours has gone all belly up, Dymus, though i hope that mine doesn't go down the same road. In the case that a new PS3 is necessary...what do you do about the data on the original's hard drive (saved games and the like)? Understand that my knowledge of this kind of thing is limited to "push button, make go."

Saa...i swear the last mechanical thing of complexity i sorta understood was DOS 3.5

Hard drives are tied to the console if you insert it into a new console it will be formatted.2011-07-27 15:45:00

My first PS3 lasted three years then got YLOD. Second PS3 lasted one year then got YLOD. Now I'm on my third which has been going for one year. I think that's right... Since late 2006? Yea... maybe...2011-07-27 16:04:00

I bought a 40GB about 2-3 months after the ps3 came out & it's still running good. I also bough a slim model about a year ago & that works good too. Everyone I personally know that bought a ps3 fat model back around when it came out has had theirs die on them though.2011-07-27 21:49:00

Mine is a 1 year old slim, and it is starting to get loud, there is not any dust In it. I vacuum it every month or so. I also rebuild database, to try and keep the hard drive top notch optimized. Just do a google search to find out how to rebuild database.2011-07-27 21:54:00

Well, for one I'm going to try all DIY attempts to get it running. Even if its only up for an hour, I can back-up my saves. If not, I've heard about people being able to take their PS3 data of their HDD and on to their computers.

I'll probably get a new one within the week, hopefully the slim will last me the rest of this console generation.

As a personal message to all Fat PS3 players... I'd advise you to regularly back-up your data. Mine cut off without warning, in the middle of playing LBP. You never know when it can happen.

Saa...like i said up-thread, i've got nothing going for me anymore when it comes to electronics skill, so i think i'll just try to keep up on the gross maintenance as much as i can, back up my data, and generally hope. Right now hope that things don't go south before my next paycheck when i can get a memory stick.

*general useless roar*

Thanks to everyone kind enough to reply here, yeah!

Well, they last a darn sight longer than Xbox ?60's I know that much;

I've had PS3's and Xbox's since launch - I'm currently on my 3rd PS3 - and my 7th Xbox 360.
Between me and 2 friends - we've collectively owned 8 PS3's and 16 Xboxs. All of them either RRoD or YLoD.

That's pretty F*ing ridiculous.

So much for each console having a 10 year shelf-life

Um.. i have an idea. I dont know if it has been tested, but... I hear that the PS3 fileststem in the HDD is FAT32. If this is true, your computer would recognize it if you bought a SATA to USB adapter. Then you could copy the whole profile game data to your computer and transfer it to your new console. I might try this. (NOT TELLING WHY!)

**** yeah.

After looking around a little, I found around 85% of YLOD are caused by the Thermal Paste on the Motherboard.
Simply disassembled, cleaned off, applied new and fixed!

Its said to lastaround anotehr 2 months from this - hopefully this'll be long enough to do the PS3 Data transfer to my Slim

I'm having trouble transferring LBP save game data from the FAT PS3 to the Slim PS3. Anyone have any new ideas? I have been reading quite a few threads today without getting much help. It is transferred, but LBP won't load it.2011-08-08 21:14:00

You'd have to have a Back-Up of your save data first, then import it after the Data Transfers done.2011-08-08 22:40:00

Is your fixed PS3 still going? I fixed my old 60GB using the same method and is working fine so far.2011-08-09 01:37:00

Yes, but I'm not going to risk anything.

Going to pick up a Slim at some point today and get the Data Transfer out of the way
