Floating Butterfly?

How do you go about making a butterfly that kinda moves and flys? Like this...

You should watch TheAdipose's tutorials. He has the information on this and a lot of other stuff. Search MrMorris1980 on youtube for some old but not outdated tutorials. But for the time being what you do is you get a piece of Dark matter. You then place a thin piece of any material in front of it. You attach the two with a motor bolt. You attach an invisible string to the the piece of material that is spinning. Attach a very small piece of material to the other end of the string and place the butterfly decoration to it. If you do not understand I suggest watching some of Adi & Luos's tutorials. It's by the maker of this level!2011-07-26 03:15:00

Your instructions are a little confusing, I have seen the tut. by TheAdipose but, that video of the butterfly was kinda too fast and skipped the butterfly part.

Anyone else?

I''m not 100% sure. But I'm a good friend of Luos~
So I could ask him for you sometime soon if you wanted.

I remember using a follower and a randomizer that would randomly choose one of four movers; all on a small piece of hologram. Each mover faced up, down, right, or left. I messed with the randomizer timing, and I ended up with a nice fluttering motion. Although, I can't remember if it worked while the follower was on. If it doesn't work for you, make another small piece of hologram, put the follower on the new one, and attach them with invisible string. As long as the follower is strong enough, shouldn't it pull the fluttering part? I don't know, now I'm rambling... You should still give this a try. I know I got it to fly in place, but I can't remember how the following went.2011-07-27 20:45:00

Butterfly deco on peice of material connected to string that shakes it.

Like a fishing line.
Peice of wood connected with that bolt that goes back and forth, and the string is connected to butterfly.
Use randomizer input into bolt.

I did this same sort of thing for my Iridescent Depths level. I used a winch and attached it to a thin, circular cardboard material with a butterfly sticker on it (making sure the butterfly sticker is larger of course). I kept the default max and min heights and altered the speed of it to be rather quick so that the butterflies would subtly jump and slightly move from side to side (since the winch isn't stiff like a piston).

I added a few of them around an LED to make it appear like moths being drawn to the light and adjusted the timing of all of them so that it was more realistic.

You could really bring stickers to life doing this. I made fish and seahorses using the same method (but with pistons instead). Make sure you make the winches and pistons invisible though. If you'd like to have more swing to it, you could attach it to a slow moving wobbling material. Subtlety is a good rule of thumb with things like this.

Just wondering how do people then make little floaty lights and round hologram material, move around and float? Similar to how you get specs of lights and sparkles in a lot of Japanese rpgs and other games in the atmosphere around you.2011-07-29 12:08:00

Hey LittleBigDes I have built something that does exactly that, in fact I gave ROT' a copy of the contraption/logic for him to use in his rather brilliant 'SACULESE' level you know the floaty lights around the lamps and such. I built it to use in my next level, though in mine they are orbs that can be harvested (there are some built in functions he didn't use), please feel free to drop in on my moon and I'll show you what I did or you can just have a copy.2011-07-30 21:16:00

I've been trying to do floaty lights around these mystic flowers I've made in my level, without using the LED lights since I know lots of lights can cause a slow down when playing online. I know hologram can also do this, but since I don't have a lot of it in my level I can't seem to get them to float around. So I'll pop over to your pod Mon/Tues if that's ok? I reserve those days for LBP, in my bizy week.

Sure no problem, I should be on sometime on Mon/Tues evening, we can also tweak it a bit if you need :0)

OMG CloacknBlagger I think I've done it. Using several movers, a randomiser, follower all on a microchip attached to pieces of hologram material which are on the end of string so they move about randomly. Anyway I would love to see your version and compare. I may do a tutorial on this or give it away as logic in my level or even a x2 area.

Nice one! there is never only one solution, but hey I'll invite you later on tonight, I'll show you what I did anyway, I don't use any string in mine just a 'hub' object which emits the lights/orbs which then utilize switching followers, the beauty of it is that you can adjust the number of lights, speed, range etc, of course what you have built may be far more suitable for your requirements. I'm only using it very subtly in my level. Trying not to over do it, I have 1-3 or occasionally 6-7 around my mystic flowers at 30-40% brightness. But I'll see you later.
