The Un-cool page

Archive: 17 posts

ok maybe someone can explain something to me...i was browsing through the cool pages earlier. i thought let me take a look and see just what it is exactly that gets people on this page...

...there are some good levels on there like the nightmare on elm street movie. but then there is complete utter crap too...stupid music videos...kill justin beiber...hell if you go the 3rd or 4th pages there are some levels with ZERO to hardly any plays!! how is that possible?

im just curious to how the cool page actually works. im not bothered about being on it. i create for the hell of it and because its fun but it got me thinking

I hate it too, all those stupid levels. I don't exacly know how the cool pages work. But to get on it, your level has to get a lot of plays in the first 24 hours.2011-07-25 13:38:00

It's based on your level's popularity, so naturally levels which the majority of players will enjoy; ie, kid's levels2011-07-25 14:59:00

I find that hard to believe. And even so how would u explain the levels with 0-10 plays? On page 3 or 4? Popularity? I don't think so. I've played so many levels that deserve more credit and defo a slot on the cool page yet they struggle to get plays. I just don't understand it at all...2011-07-25 15:16:00

Yes, if level gets 10 plays with no single dislike in quick time it's like on the rocket on cool pages, but the rest depends not expected plays and there rates. This is why i recommend all the time to people to play there levels with most friends and people as soon as possible.

i still dont think thats what it is to be honest because a couple of my levels and other people i know..well there levels most certainly got played 10 times without a dislike...in a reasonably speedy amount of time....still no cool pages. and it still doesnt answer how a level with zero plays gets on there. seriously. the cool page is pure CRAP!2011-07-25 21:18:00

How the cool page works is a mystery. Based on some observations, I believe that levels get on the cool page depending on how many people play the certain level when it is first published/republished in the first few hours.2011-07-25 22:22:00

Bah, this isn't what I was hoping this thread would be about.... I thought it was going to be a suggestion to make an un-cool page, made from the opposite criteria than the cool page, so ya know, might actually find something good?

It's actually a full blown task to find new semi decent levels, I do lucky dip, filter out lbp1 (nothing against it, just since it was given away free the hope is slightly less h4h:actual lvl ratio.... But u can find urself scrolling for yrs, past the "my house" and "tron racer" and ugh, lvls unnamed and no badge.

About to break 5 million "levels" and 4.9 million are utter utter ****e, the remainder is broken down from the is ok/has potential up to the creme de la creme!

Well, I've had this occur. On my Da Vinci Ghost Effect level, it shot up so quick I couldn't keep track of it. I couldn't find it on the Cool Pages or Newest, but on my Earth, people were all over it. No idea how other people were finding it.

On my Dream Catcher Trailer, it slowly moved onto the Cool Pages, then fell away. Got to page 2, then slipped down.

So, even though a level might get on the Cool Pages, but that doesn't mean it will stay. Most if those levels with few plays slip off soon after.

I don't understand the Cool Pages either. They should work, but people keep playing junk levels and giving yays and hearts. It's quite baffling.

What's so surprising? People like familiarity. As horrible as the generic levels are, they meet certain criteria. People know "how to play" a bomb survival level based on past experience, regardless of who made it. They also enjoy playing the level to see if it measures up to past levels with similar content. It's like every kid at the preschool drawing a kitty. The next day they all want to draw another kitty, and look at the kitty pictures. It's familiar and fun. It's Teletubbies, where they do the same scene twice in a row, then once more for good measure.

Familiarity is everything to kids.

I have been tempted to pop out a generic crapper just to see myself on the Cool Pages for once.

I know it's almost stomach-turning, but I have to say, I understand the appeal of these levels. There's always someone to play with, so if nothing else, you can instantly meet up with someone. Of course as I say this I recall the few times I've tried to jump into one, which instantly results in being taken to a moon, or a pod, and slapped around by compulsive costume-changing idiots. Try to leave and they follow... but let them follow and they tell you "go do bomb survvla" and Boo everything you try to play with them.

Now I'm grumpy again. Ugh.

I honestly have no idea on how it works. Doesn't seem to work too well, anyway. Sometimes the newest levels get caught on the 3-5th page. I've noticed it too. I got a bit excited and tried to find one of my underplayed levels . They even said that they improved it. Eh. It's not going to completely destroy LBP like some people rant. It's only a flaw that can be removed if good creators start showing their faces again.2011-07-27 05:32:00

It's simple people like you that think those levels suck & come to sites like lbpc are the minority & the majority of people that play lbp & lbp2 think those levels really are cool. It will never be fixed. It's a minorities opinion that it needs to be fixed.2011-07-27 23:53:00

I don't like it either. But they aren't going to do something about it.

Like I said I'm only curious to how the cool pages works. And " people like me " ( whatever the hell u meant by that ) are not the minority. It's 50/50. Half the community hate it and the other half dont. I can understand appeal of these sucky lvls to kids and what not so naturally I expect to see them but it doesn't mean I have to like it. It goes to show that lbp is a kids game.2011-07-30 08:57:00
