BIG NOTE: MY PSN ID IS SHIMSOK

So looking at this section of the forums, there aren't really that many active review threads. I've been wanting to submit my own level in one of them for a while, but the mass majority of them are inactive at the moment, or are very slow. Then I thought about how there must be several people who come here who probably feel the same way, so I felt that making my own review thread would be a great idea!

Here are my guidelines before you submit your level for review:

1. LBP2 levels only. I'm sorry, but after having played LBP2 a lot, I am spoiled, so therefore I doubt I would be able to leave the best reviews for LBP1 levels.
2. The level you submit for reviewing must be one that you swear you put your life into. Do not submit any levels that you personally feel are half-assed, because if you don't like them, then what makes you think I will?
3. Feel free to submit any type of level. Just know that I am not always playing with someone, so multiplayer levels will be harder for me to judge.
4. No level links that lead me to another level that is completely unrelated to the one that you just submitted. Submitting a level that has one of these will result in a lower score. Level links are fine as long as they continue from where the previous level left off.
5. All levels must be linked to me through lbp.me.
6. I will only take up to 3 review requests at once.
7. No level hubs. If you link me to a level hub, please tell me specifically which level it is that you want me to review, otherwise I will skip over your review request.
8. These guidelines are subject to change at any time, so keep an eye on them.

So as you can see, I give a sort of short review for you to take a quick look at if you want, and then I also give the much more detailed review which will most likely give you a better idea of what to fix.

And since I'm doing this, I would also appreciate it if you would check out my own level at http://lbp.me/v/y4n7x0. Happy creating!

I was actually thinking the same thing, about creating my own review thread to try and help out those other few reviewers. But I just got the game from the welcome back package, and was thinking I should get more experience before trying to do reviews.

So your really not gonna try LBP1 levels? That makes me sad I just got LBP2 so I don't have created levels there yet.

Well anyways, good job starting your own review thread to bring the community back up (if it was ever down).

Hello Scholarship, I would very like you to take a look at my lonesome level that I have just published. I have been working on it since I got LBP2 on release day... So, yeah, I feel I have been pouring my heart and soul into it

On a serious note though I don't have as much time as I would like to work away in LBP... This creation was created over 6 months, though I would only get short spells of time to sit down and actually work things out... you know life, family and work stuff gets in the way

Highway Encounter is 'inspired' by a computer game from 1985. It's a strategy/action game that is helped pioneer the 3D/Isometric playing angle - There are a huge amount of video clips of the original game on a very famous video sharing website...

Here is the lbp.me link: Highway Encounter (http://lbp.me/v/1bn27g)

I'm off to go queue up The Missing Piece

@romancrisis: Sorry for beating you to this, haha. But nope, I've still got it in my mind that I will not do reviews for LBP1 levels.
@koltonaugust: This section that I have posted in is the only reviews section that I can find

Anyway, I will start my reviewing later on today, as I need to get some shut-eye. Here is the current order that I will be submitting my reviews in:

Hi there i have already asked a few reviewers to review some of my levels but for some it will take time. I want to see different peoples perspectives on my levels to really know if they are worthy or not.

If you don't mind i would really like it if you could review my 40k level.

It actually has three parts. An intro, mission 1 part 1 and mission 1 part 2 they should level link when played. It would be great if you could review all parts but otherwise if you dont wish too then mostly mission 1 part 2 is the one i think i would really like a review on as it is the one i have work hardest on.

Intro http://lbp.me/v/zq6w63
mission 1 part 1http://lbp.me/v/zpqmfm
mission 1 part 2http://lbp.me/v/zpqn06

If you could review this it would be great. Thanks.

NEW GUIDELINE RULE: I AM NOT ACCEPTING LEVEL HUBS. IF YOU ARE GOING TO LINK ME TO A LEVEL HUB, PLEASE SPECIFICALLY TELL ME WHICH LEVEL YOU WANT REVIEWED, OTHERWISE I WILL SKIP OVER IT. I WILL ALLOW THIS LEVEL THAT I AM CURRENTLY REVIEWING TO SLIP.

LEVEL NAME: ReCharge
AUTHOR: Beatdough

ORIGINALITY: 6.5/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Basic racer with small Mario Kartish feel, unique visual style

GAMEPLAY: 4/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Cool power-ups, overly-sensitive steering controls.

VISUALS: 7/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Good visual style, tracks look same throughout.

REPLAY VALUE: 2/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: The controls

OVERALL: 4.875/10

LONG REVIEW:

I am personally not one for level hubs, and I?m sure most players feel the same way. However, as I said before, I will let this one slip. I?m just here to critique the racing aspects, which is what I bet you wanted me to do, and I certainly have a few things to say: The visuals are very nice, and I like the style you went with, especially with the cars you?re racing in (batteries, LOL). I do think the tracks themselves would have stood out a bit more if their overall look changed much more significantly as you traveled through them. This isn?t a major gripe, though. At least, not when put up against what I have to say about the gameplay. What really bugged me with this level is that the steering controls were WAY TOO sensitive. In any racer, it's important that the player feels right at home and comfortable with the vehicle they?re controlling, but with what you?ve made, they?ll be going all over the place. For example, in order to perform a 90 degree turn, all I had to do was push the analog stick right or left for only about a second, or so that?s what it felt like. Because of this, it was way too easy for me to hit a wall, or even worse, to turn all the way around. In addition to this, sometimes I would hit a wall and then hit the other wall opposite of me. The experience definitely was not friendly, and what I just explained was a common occurrence as well.

The controls are the only huge thing, but the other thing to take note of is the power-ups. I did not have a second player with me as I raced, due to level links disconnecting us, but from what I saw, these power-ups are very useful. My problems with them are just the fact that, for one, you don't initially know that those red squares are what provide you with one of them. Maybe it would be common sense for other players, but it wasn?t for me. Maybe I just need to play more racing games, haha. The other thing about the power-ups is that you never know which one(s) you?ve got until you?ve used them. I would suggest making a pop-up come up or something that would let the player know what they just picked up.

However, despite my large amount of complaining, I did notice that once you get a big used to everything, the racing does become very entertaining, but the problem for you, as a creator, is that there are tons of other racing levels out there which offer much tighter controls, so the mass majority of players will not likely see a reason to come back to what you have made.

Oh yea, and another thing is that each scoreboard on each track should lead the player back to the hub, rather than back to the pod. It's much more convenient, so that the player doesn?t have to constantly keep on reloading the level just to see what else you have for them to try out.

Thanks for the review. My level is meant to be a mini racing series so asking you to review one track would have been kind of weird, but i understand.
When it comes to the power-ups, you can choose which one you wan't to use. It's not random, but i might look into making it that way now that you mentioned it. Another thing, i never thought about is making the player return to the hub once the race was over but i guess that does make sense. Lastly the controls do take some getting used to but most people "or at least people i know, might need a bigger sampling" pick them up pretty quickly so i didn't think the controls were that bad. I guess they can use some tweaking though, but anyway thanks.

@Beatdough: From what I can recall (and I get the feeling this is just a vague memory), sometimes I’d press square after running over a red box and have nothing happen, while I would press O or X and I’d either shoot or have a shield form around me, so it didn’t seem to me like you could use whatever ability you want. Again, I am recalling from what I believe is a vague memory. Another thing is that a level will always be easier to play for the creator and anyone else who pitched in during its development than it will be for other people who play it once it is published, because the creators know the mindset that the level is to be approached with.

LEVEL NAME: Highway Encounter
AUTHOR NAME: stuk71

ORIGINALITY: 10/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: First “escort mission” level I have found in LBP2.

GAMEPLAY: 6.5/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Tight/mildly-difficult-to-get-used-to controls, good shooting mechanics, difficult/unpredictable enemies.

VISUALS: 8/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Very detailed background, detailed level layout.

STORY: 5/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Very basic, carries level along.

REPLAY VALUE: 7/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Difficulty keeps making you come back.

OVERALL: 7.3/10

LONG REVIEW:

I want to start off by saying I did not complete this level. I don’t even know if I almost finished it. I also have not played the game you claim this level is based on.

You start off the level by introducing the player with a nice, but brief cutscene which also indirectly emphasizes how many lives you have. Within seconds, the player is thrown into the mix and realizes that they have to escort the Lasertron. At first glance, they think this is going to be easy, until they make their first move.

Now, I know that you said you don’t have all the time in the world to work on a level or to make improvements, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna let you off. I’m sure it’s the same situation with several others who request reviews here, and my job is to give my most honest opinion and to point-out the flaws, so here we go.

The controls to me felt…strange. I’m used to having all up/down/left/right movement being manageable with just one analog stick, so I didn’t do so well during my first couple of tries. However, getting the hang of it all really didn’t take long for me. Once I did, I was able to take in the world you have created, and I really like what I saw. Elevated mountains, a bridge I’m crossing over (I assume that’s what it is), and a flowing river (even though it was created with only one material, it fat in with everything else). The scenery was mixed-up, too, as I continued to play, keeping the atmosphere within the level somewhat fresh. Then there was the combat, which came in to tarnish that fresh feeling.

I’m getting the idea that you may have hand-crafted the most complex aritificial intelligence I have encountered in LBP2, yet. The enemies have absolutely no pattern to their movement, which is very technically impressive. The downside to this is that it makes fighting them extremely complicated. The player is only capable of firing up/down/left/right/diagonally, meaning that your aiming is not as 3-dimensional as it could be. Couple that with limited lives, and lives that can be destroyed by the enemies themselves, and you have a level that, to most, will feel down-right impossible to beat. There are even some sections where there is no way to advance the Lasertron further without losing a life or two. However, it is this impossibility that kept me coming back, because the gameplay is good enough to where you are tempted to just keep on going down further on that bridge. At some point, though, I gave up. The only real change that I think needs to be made is the fact that your lives can be destroyed by the enemies. It’s strange, though, because that should be something that hurts the replay value, but it seems to help it instead. I can’t further judge this level since I was not able to complete it.

Here's an old LBP1 level I made that I really only keep up because I'm sort of attached to it. The only thing I think that's good are the visual and music departments.

@DarrienEven: Please re-read the guidelines. I do not review LBP1 levels.

LEVEL NAME: 40k Space Hulk
AUTHOR: Lordwarblade

ORIGINALITY: 7.5/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Lots of top-down games of all sorts, hardly any that are multi-leveled and involve mechs.

GAMEPLAY: 8/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Ship has floaty movement, map makes level beatable but also too easy, good hit detection, good enemy selection, nonlinear, good controls, multiple playable characters.

VISUALS: 9/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Detailed surfaces and corridors, good mech/ship designs, ?fancy? asteroids.

STORY: 8/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Clearly mission-oriented, simple but easy-to-understand.

CHOREOGRAPHY: 7/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Some shots are detailed and some aren?t, shows where to go but not always how to get there, makes story easy-to-understand.

REPLAY VALUE: 6.5/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Depends on player?s interests, gameplay fun enough to go another round, no more trying to figure out what to do.

OVERALL: 7.7/10

LONG REVIEW:

You?re out in space. You have mechs. That alone gives this level a coolness that is not often found. In addition to this, you have a very simple story that is easy to follow, but is more than enough to make the player want to keep on moving forward. The initial cutscene was pretty good in setting everything up, and I definitely do like the sense of atmosphere it brings. It has this very ?missiony? feel, if you get what I?m saying.

After the cutscene ends, you?re thrown into combat in your own spaceship. Getting used to controlling it is pretty easy, with basic shooting buttons and whatnot. The thing about it that you may wanna fix, however, is the floatiness that it has to its movement. Sometimes I turn a bit more than I want to or even a bit less. It's nothing major, but it was a bother here and there, especially whenever enemies would surround me. Speaking of enemies, despite how there?s only a different few types of them, they were varied, given the length of the level and were placed in good spots. Yes, they were pushovers, but them being such just made it that much more fun to mow them down. As much fun as they were, though, they couldn?t make up for the confusion the player may feel during the spaceship level where they are trying to find the pad. Yes, you do have a camera that shows it, but having more cameras show a bit of a pathway there would help out a little bit more. Again, it's nothing major, just a little thing.

Speaking further about the ship section, the hit detection was very good, and despite the floatiness, the feel of it all was very strong. The asteroids themselves had better designs than I would have expected them to have, as well. I?m not too sure how I feel about them spawning an endless flow of enemies, though, because that would also make situations overwhelming at times.

Then we get to the next level, where you seem to show off a bit more. Here, the player has 4 characters they can switch between controlling by just simply pressing a button. This is both a big plus and also a little bit of a minus. I have to give you kudos for making the character-switching so easy, cause I?m sure the logic behind it is pretty complicated. It's a plus because it offers more gameplay variety, but I also feel these some of these characters could have been condensed down to just 2 or 3 characters, because individually, they didn?t have very many abilities.

The level layout of this was also very good. I would have wondered why you didn?t make it a bit longer, but I?m sure the thermo was not letting your imagination be anymore pushy.

The last thing I want to comment on is the map system. It's great that you have one, otherwise the player would completely lose themselves, but it kind of makes them play a level with such a nonlinear layout in a linear way. I don't know how to critique it to make it better, but don't get the idea that you should get rid of it, because you definitely shouldn?t.

Overall, this was a great level with some very good combat. Hopefully, you can submit more levels like this, because top-down combat is a market with a void.

Thanks for the review Scholarship i really appreciate it.

The ships floatieness is a problem i am working on but it is difficult. I aready have thoughts on what to do to give the individual charracters more distinct abilities but its just getting them to work logic wise as well as thermo wise.

I have to say i was amazed at the score you gave my level as a level like this is usually an aquired tast i think so that pleases me. The map was made like it was because too many people had troublefinishing the level before.

Because the level is based on a board game by games workshop it is very difficult to keep the original theme and layout as well as adapt it for LBP comunity so there are many thing s that do need work still.

I do have two other top down levels one is a zombie survival type level and the othere a RPG style survival themed level. Both arent stricktly survival as such but basicly the same. I would like if you could review one of them as well but as i have lready had a review from you i don't know if that is okay or not.

Thanks for the review and i shall look into the problems you came up with thanks a lot.

LEVEL NAME: Wooden Works: Part 1
AUTHOR: Crazed Creator

ORIGINALITY: 8/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Tons of platformers out there, hardly any with this sort of level design.

GAMEPLAY: 8.5/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Some very inventive platforming segments, one that I didn?t appreciate.

VISUALS: 7/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Not particularly standout, serves the level well.

STORY: 10/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Not much story, what was there was well-told.

CHOREOGRAPHY: 8/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Told the story, made it clear what needed to be done, intro could be way cut down.

REPLAY VALUE: 8/10
WHY YOU GOT THIS SCORE: Great to show to friends, very crafty platforming to revisit, and an intriguing level layout worth looking at again.

OVERALL: 8.25/10

LONG REVIEW:

I want to point out something real quick, and that is that your level?s top review (at my time of playing) spoiled one of the platforming parts that I?m sure you wanted to somewhat surprise the player with.

Anyway, off to my own review. You start this level off with one of the best intros I've seen to date. Your choreography was stellar during this part, and it really makes your PSN ID memorable to anyone who plays watches it. However, after all was said and done, I really did not appreciate the long stare at the blue sky that you force on us. That sort of thing should only last for about 4 or so seconds, yet you extended it out to about 12. I think what it may have been was that you had an incredibly slow fade effect applied. Luckily for you, that?s the only major thing I have to point out.

The gameplay commences straight after this, and the player?s character is immediately shown to be within a large factory. The factory itself looks pretty good, but its look doesn?t really mesmerize the eyes. Then again, factories are not pretty places, so the look is suiting. I just feel that there could have been a decoration or two added here and there, but nonetheless, it established the level with its own feel, and in the midst of all the action your character does, you?ve got a very minor story going on about trying to get things up and running again. It's nothing to turn into a novel, and I?m sure you never intended it to be, but for what it tries to be, it does so perfectly: a story that guides the player through complex platforming.

That?s not to say that the gameplay is complicated. Well, it is and it isn?t. I really like the puzzles you have in here because they are of a style not often seen in LBP. They don't so much test the player?s patience as much as they do the player?s agility and know-how. You had one very cleverly-made segment where the player has to build their own stairs in order to reach a higher destination, and the mechanics you have implemented work really well. My problem with it is that?I don't know, I expected it to be crisper. This is the part I was referring to at the beginning of the review, because this was being hyped up. Maybe it's just a ?me? thing since I had some very high interest in what you had done here. I think the one improvement you could make here is so that the wooden blocks you shoot out automatically point themselves at an easier-to-jump-onto-angle once they hit the wall, cause I?m sure a few people may have gotten frustrated at falling down if they felt that their fall wasn?t so much in their control. Don?t get me wrong, though, because this was part was still well-made, and I definitely like the idea of it.

Your other platforming segments were more procedural, which I liked as well, such as hitting a button to obtain bombs that you could throw at a high-up wall to having to move back and forth on the layers to attempt to throw objects into a fiery-moving-box (I forget what it was called). The LBP servers could really use more of these, and you?re among the ones who bring them. The way that you explain how to get these parts done is also very good, with cameras showing you where to go and side characters telling you what you need to do at the same time.

And since I?m mentioning your camerawork, I want to say that you do a really good job of using it to show off your level layout, which is among the more visually entertaining styles that I have seen out there. Once I saw that certain parts of the level reconnect with other parts, I loved it.

I just want to wrap this up by saying that this level felt like something of its own kind. The community will be blessed if you can continue to pump out more levels like this, so keep up the creating!

LONG REVIEW:

So I enter into this ?world? that you have created, and I am greeted by a cutscene, one of which is both good and bad. The scenery that this establishing shot shows is great and really serves to give your level an atmoshphere. It sets up the setting very nicely and allows the player to get a mild feel for what you are trying to sell to them. The voice acting done here is of a really high quality as well. Kudos to you for that. However, after the narrator has spoken a few lines, his wordiness becomes apparent. It was as if you were trying to tell us, in detail, what your scenery is already emphasizing. Just cut down a little bit on the dialogue here.

The player then obtains control of their character and is able to walk through your ?world?. The visuals here are very good, and so is the accompanying music. The one thing that I really liked is how the citizens who were standing around were also voice acted. Most people who lay sackbots out in their levels make them mute characters that, for all we care, did not have to even be there, but you give them an entertaining purpose. Then as the player moves on, they encounter a small platforming challenge that?doesn?t really present itself as such.

I?m specifically referring to the part where there is a sign that says ?Don?t cross the line?. It took me some time to figure out that I had to pull something from the right side over to the left to jump up onto a higher platform. What made this even more complicated was that the security ship that comes down crashed into something, leaving its remains on the ground for the player to attempt to hurdle an object over it, when they may not even know what to do in the first place. This is all that got on my nerves, though, so at least make it so that the ship?s body can?t block the player?s path.

Then more platforming shows up, jumping from roof to roof. The visuals here still look great, and before long, the player realizes that they are in a sneaking mission. I felt that the guards could have had a stronger sense of alertness, because getting by them was a bit too easy, but it was still fun in the end. As the player sneaks around, you show off even more dazzling scenery, and it isn?t long before they enter the second half of the level.

This second half also has a good cutscene, where it looks like the player?s character has a bit of an ?interest? in someone. Then a guard and his boss come out and chat with each other, this being another perfect example of your acting, as well as your script-writing. It's just entertaining to watch characters who are well-portrayed in LittleBigPlanet. After that, the player gets to see sunlight through a window, which absolutely STUNNED me when I first saw it. It was extremely convincing and realistic in how the light rays maneuvered. Whatever you did with the light bulbs worked exactly as how you imagined it. And this is only the beginning of the thrills.

A couple unexpected chase sequences occurred that were very well-put together, and the scenery that went with it helped to sell the rushing feeling. Sadly, after these are done, the level is over, and the player sees a ?to be continued? sign.

Whatever you are doing is looking to be a spectacular production, so please do keep up the solid work.

It's a recreation of one of the most awesome music pieces ever created. And umm, it's not just a music level. More of a music video.
