Coming to LittleBigPlanet this Thursday are a handful of Christmas-themed costumes, a material, objects, decorations, and new stickers! Plus, you can put these items to use in our ongoing Christmas Extravaganza (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5690), so make sure to snag these before it's over! The full writeup is below.

Check the store (http://blog.us.playstation.com/category/playstation-store-playstation-network/) this Thursday and get your hands on our first one: Festive Level Pack (includes):

Two new Costumes ? Christmas Tree headpiece and a Wrapped Sackboy.
One new Create Material = Wrapping Paper (cardboard w/ giftwrap texture).
Two new Objects = A Festive Sleigh and holiday themed light.
Six new Decorations = A Festive Bauble, Bell, Wrapping Bow, Candy Cane, Card and Stocking.
A ton of new Stickers = holiday themed of course, including a Red Nose Reindeer, Elves, Turkey images and many more.?and a partridge in a pear tree (j/k)

This is just the first Level Pack ? but with the holidays only around for a few more weeks, the Festive Level Pack is only available for a limited time and will be removed from the store after January 8, 2009. Remember, there will be more to come, so continue to check back here again to see what is ?in-store? for you.

UPDATE:

Looks like the Asian PlayStation website has spilled some beans. On December 18, the Hong Kong PSN will be getting not only a Solid Snake Sackboy, but a character and level pack as well.

No prices are listed, but the items themselves most certainly are. There are individual sackboy costumes for Solid Snake, Meryl, Screaming Mantis and Raiden, a pack selling all four of those, and a "Level Pack", which looks like it includes stuff like creepy, over-sized manscenery.

There's of course no mention of this on any other PlayStation website - including the notoriously leaky Japanese one - so there's no guarantee these will appear globally once Thursday rolls around. But every other LBP update has gone live globally, so keep your Kojima-caressing fingers crossed.

Anyone know of the connection between Mm and the people creating these things? I recall reading (somewhere) that the people making the costumes were Sony rather than Mm - and it makes sense - if modders can create new models without the cooperation of the developers, then there's no reason why you couldn't do it with cooperation, inside knowledge.

I ask because what I'm really waiting for is new levels with 60 or so new prizes in them like the original levels had -- collecting and discovering prizes is what makes the PLAY part fun -- I haven't played online much at all since I got 100% and helped my friends do the same. But to do that, going from the pricing of the xmas stuff, it'd be around $17.94 _per level_!

Even at $2.99 per level (which would still be a crazy high price), getting 60 or so new objects would rip off the people who paid the same price for 11 or so new objects, so it'd be hard to see the price drop lower per level.

But if LBP is going to be stingy with the prizes because Sony has created a precedent of selling at extortionate prices.. then that really sucks, because it means the only thing I can look forward to is taking LBP off the shelf in a few years when perhaps I've forgotten most of the Story levels.

Better value than the costume packs. I might buy this one. Need to support DLC with actual content, even if it is a bit expensive.2008-12-16 20:06:00

I remember them saying that the usable DLC would be free. It seems like they lied.....by usable I mean, new materials, stickers, decoration etc, that you can use to make levels with. Micro transactions will be the death of gaming for me. Why do you buy them people? whatever happened to the days when you paid your money for a game and in return got a finished product? Vote with you wallet, don't buy it!!! grrrrr 2008-12-17 01:26:00

I have to admit, once again a bit late with the kicker there. But it's a step in the VERY right direction, with stuff we can use in create mode

I was already planning to make one, now I'll just have more stuff to use :hero:

You know, if that logic were to apply, then this game would have done far worse than it did in sales. What made this game so interesting to me was knowing it would continue to evolve after release, allowing for a community to stay interested and to stick around. They give you some stuff for free and sell you other stuff. Fair enough in my eyes. I'd rather continuous support than LBP 2 coming out in one year and being incompatible with LBP (1).

The reality of today's society and it's (unchanged) capitalist ways should not be cause for rebellion, unless you disagree with capitalism all together.

My point is, micro transactions (effectively fragmented expantion packs) are a good way for a developer to maintain funding for all it does to advance a game, which in turn is good for the community that follows this game. For those who can't pay, it still means they get all the free stuff that follows along with the paying stuff.

There, that's what I had to say xD

Yeah - I guess getting continuous support is a good thing. But they should be up front from the start about us having to pay for it. Maybe my recollection is off but i'm sure they said at one point that there would be no charge for actual game enhancing DLC. As for capitalism - I think it is a fundamentally flawed system as the current crisis shows. But don't get me started on that! lol!

I actually agree with you there, but I won't get started on it either, it's a never ending converstation...

I've watched every interview and every trailer about 20 or more times each (yea I was even more obsessed with this game before it came out!) and what I remember is more of a "some will be free, some will not" attitude. All I know is I'm all happy about this, and actually even more excited to see what comes next.

By the way I spotted this awesome pic on Kotaku, feel free to add it to the OP:

Hey that's a good question... How will it work if I make a prise that contains said wrapping paper material... Will you then be able to use it as well, or will it be blocked and show up as regular cardboard when you try to place it in one of our levels?? This hasn't been officially answered has it?

you could make a block of wrapping paper material and than save it in your inventory and then put it in a prize bubble. And than just wait what happens.2008-12-17 05:45:00

my guess is that people would be able to use your objects and it would thus have to download the material to their hard drive, but would not show up in their material list unless they purchased the pack. kind of like someone creating something with a material you haven't "unlocked" from the main game. it's still on your hard drive so your ps3 knows how to render the object, but it doesn't show up in your inventory as a usable material because it is not "unlocked". unlocked = purchased.

i have a question though... where is the santa hat and beard?! the santa costume they released last week is only the jacket and pants. are the beard and hat unlockable in the main game somewhere???

oh... and i'm ABSOLUTELY buying this. will save me a little bit of effort here and there, and will also make my levels look slightly more polished. got to support the christmas stuff.

Playstation Blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/12/10/littlebigplanet-weekly-download-update-santa-edition/)

And next week on 12/18/08, you can complete your outfit with a Santa hat and beard that will be available for FREE as well! (But note, the outfit will only be available till January 8th so be sure to download it before then!)

They are releasing it in two parts. The hat and beard come this week 12/18.

I think they ment things like if they add new tools like water or ice or the ability to change the lighting in the middle of the level, that's what i believe they will release for free to everyone. Or at least thats how i took it when i heard them say that.

Anyone know what happens if a non-level pack owner opens up a level with
the wrapping paper in it???

Will it:

A)Not open
B)Revert to a default material
C)Show the wrapping paper
D)Other

Please say it's either C or B
