The Fear of giving prizes. (I need your help)
Archive: 13 posts
Hi guys, I'm planning to make a second music level. Unfortunately i'm deciding if I should give the song as a prize or not. I know that I will have a couple of happy people putting it in their levels but what I fear the most is that some people Will just steal it in general. Not giving credit. Heck, they might even make a level, a (gulp) h4h level with my song and that would be TERRIBLE. I just fear that if I put something that I worked really hard on that somebody is just gonna steal it and claim it theirs. What should I do guys? To be a prize? Or not to be a prize? That is the question. | 2011-07-21 01:53:00 Author: ishotthesherrif Posts: 101 |
I think you should make them ask you for it. Then you could check out their planet and see if you want to give it to them. | 2011-07-21 02:00:00 Author: Zero10100 Posts: 385 |
I think you should make them ask you for it. Then you could check out their planet and see if you want to give it to them. I would do that but the flaw in that is that if theres just too much people asking for it. It's gonna be such a hassle to give it all to them | 2011-07-21 02:06:00 Author: ishotthesherrif Posts: 101 |
Levels that showcase creativity like art or music immediately attract two types of players beyond the casual "oh this looks like fun" crowd: the first type immediately wants your creativity as a prize, for collection or personal use; the other type immediately wants to judge your talent. Saying you're showcasing artwork is an invitation to criticism that somehow makes people bigger jerks than if you give no explanation or title to your level at all. It's a bummer. You'll have to choose which is the lesser of two evils, personally. Do you share your object, satisfying more players and increasing the risk of theft? Or do you make it a gallery only, attracting Boos and comments like "no prize = sux"? These are the risks. Practically speaking, you can always share later. You can't unshare once you've shared. | 2011-07-21 02:12:00 Author: Unknown User |
Aye. This reminds me of when I imported my BETA profile... I was wondering if I should give away the POD. My friend said I should. And sure enough, my favorite glitch patched just like that because of all of the (excuse my language, but) idiots that destroyed their pod, and did not know how to repair it. | 2011-07-21 02:21:00 Author: StaticLinuxpro Posts: 482 |
It would help if you made it not shareable. Also, shouldn't you be honored that people used your music? The thing about credit is that to most people it's just a name. They don't really care who made it. | 2011-07-21 19:54:00 Author: GameRoom Posts: 200 |
It would help if you made it not shareable. Won't help. There's no ownership on the instrument parts, so you can just copy them to a new music sequencer, and make it look like you made it yourself. | 2011-07-21 19:58:00 Author: Aya042 Posts: 2870 |

Thats what I do to the two songs I got from JimmyJ's song/overlord tut level. | 2011-07-21 20:04:00 Author: BonBonBoi Posts: 246 |
There's no way around it. If you give it as a prize, there's no way to force people to list you in their credits. For me, it's a matter of personal pride to never list anybody else's name in my level descriptions so I avoid using other people's stuff unless I absolutely can't accomplish what I want without it (yes, I have given credit when I've used people's stuff; I just prefer to stick with my own stuff if possible, and if I DO use somebody else's stuff in my level, I consider that to be quite a compliment to them 'cuz I'm admitting that I couldn't build it as well as they could). I don't know if others share my attitude, but if they do, they might not be as ethical about it as I am (meaning they'd use your stuff and just not credit you). And then there are the people who have a bunch of resources they've received as prizes but simply don't remember to credit all of them (another reason I try to avoid using other people's stuff is that I fear I'll forget what I've used so I'll end up not crediting them). There's also the possibility that they'll publish a level as a showcase with your stuff and claim it as their own. All I can say is, get over it. You can't control people and if they want to be *****, you can't stop them, so don't stress over it. Just know that if you share, you're going to be taken advantage of--if you can't deal with it, then just don't share. I'd like to think I'm pretty generous with what I share: whenever I would make a new mech, I'd set my old mech levels to be copyable; and yes, I've seen copies of my levels published by other people (my name is in the title and they don't even bother to change it ). Personally, I don't care, but if I did, I would still consider it worth putting up with the crap so that I could share my stuff with those who want it, but that's something you have to decide for yourself. | 2011-07-21 21:19:00 Author: Sehven Posts: 2188 |
Well it's a showcase...you don't have to give them anything. But if they did want something they should just join you and you see if they are worthy of your songs. | 2011-07-21 21:33:00 Author: fighterwindplus Posts: 403 |
I think you should keep it as a gallery item, who cares if afew people get mad because it's not a prize? We know what kind of people they are. With all the recent levels on the cool page getting thousands of plays from other peoples stuff, i totally understand why you're worrying. | 2011-07-21 22:23:00 Author: gigglecrab Posts: 232 |
Tell them "Do not steal it...or else YOU WILL DIEEEH!" (Not serious) I don't give out prizes anymore. Sure, it's nice to share. But it's a music level. The only purpose of that is to entertain the listeners. If they really want it, tell them not to steal it or make it public in any way possible. Or, you could find a way to "signature" you level somehow. Let everyone know it's yours. By the way, when you select the object in the Popit, it displays its original creator. So maybe you could rely on that. | 2011-07-21 22:48:00 Author: Sackpapoi Posts: 1195 |
