Media Molecule explains why it's "stepping away" from LittleBigPlanet

Archive: 30 posts

Via Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-07-20-media-molecule-its-time-to-expand):

Media Molecule has explained studio director Siobhan Reddy's recent comment that the UK developer is "stepping away" from LittleBigPlanet (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-07-01-mm-stepping-away-from-littlebigplanet).

Speaking during a Develop conference keynote this morning, Media Molecule co-founders Kareem Ettouney, Mark Healey and Alex Evans told ex-Sony president of worldwide studios Phil Harrison ? the man who signed LBP as a PlayStation 3 exclusive in 2006 ? that the Guildford studio is "still very involved" with the game, pointing to the upcoming release of the PlayStation Move pack.

However, Media Molecule is now a multi-thread company, the Sony-owned developer said, and branching out into new areas.

"It's a bit like, if you think of LBP as having a child, Sackboy was our child, you get to the stage where they want to leave home," art director Mark Healey said. "It's kind of like that.

"When my son leaves home, whenever that is, I'll probably care about him even more and want to keep tabs on him and make sure he's not doing the things I did when I was his age. But we're still very involved with it."

"One of the funny pains we're having growing ? airing our dirty laundry ? we're no longer a single-threaded company," added technical director Alex Evans.

"Siobhan is no longer managing eight people in a start-up. She's managing this big franchise that Sony are really interested in us being involved with forever, which is cool.

"There are all these different threads, and this stepping away thread is just one of them.

"Ironically, she was the one who publically said, oh, we're stepping away, thus ignoring the other half of her job, which is, for example, the LBP Move pack, which is coming out.

"The point is, we're no longer a one threaded company. That's really difficult for us, but we're doing it to keep it fresh. Because if you do the same thing all of the time single-threadedly, and that's it, you do end up getting stale.

"So what we've tried to do is almost pile things on. But as anyone knows who's worked in a growing studio, that's a dangerous place to go."

Little-known UK developer Double11 is the studio behind the PlayStation Vita version of LittleBigPlanet (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-06-27-whos-making-littlebigplanet-vita).

It is acting chiefly as the technology architects on the game, working closely with Sweden's Tarsier Studios, which worked with LittleBigPlanet creator Media Molecule on the last two editions on the PlayStation 3.

According to art director Kareem Ettouney, this is a situation Media Molecule is perfectly happy with.

"LBP involved us working with an extended family of companies and teams of very talented people, like Tarsier Studios. They have slowly learned the language and excelled at it.

"Once a language is established, that's the time to evolve and develop. Everybody speaks that language. The design style and the criteria of what works and what doesn't is much more established now, and it's time to expand."

I wonder if this involves tightening up the floaty physics of sackboy for the next console or version of LBP in the future? Or even tightening it up for something completely different? I know from an interview previously that they could not do this for LBP2 as it meant sacrificing eveything from LBP1 and that they would have had to rewrite the engine/physics of the game. Then LBP1 items, DLC etc would not be compatable LBP1>LBP2 and LBP2<LBP1, considering how huge the community is that would not have been a good thing.

I hope to see lots of other good things coming from Mm in the future.

UPDATE: I didn't actually have too much problem with the floaty physics of sackboy in LBP2 this time round. Got used to it or got more skilled at landing jumps or may be they managed to improve it slightly overall in LBP2?

Well if you think about it this only means that the next time we do get an LBP game it'll be way better than this one. However this also means it won't be for a good while, but I'm not complaining as long as they keep shelling out the DLC.2011-07-20 12:23:00

Isn't she the silhouetted sticker from LBP1? Holding the hem of her skirt? As if ready to twirl like a Stevie Nixx vision? Never was a question in my mind (also one of my favorite stickers... used countless times).2011-07-22 20:35:00

Let me guess...to get the PlayStation Move pack, you need Move. And like 6 bucks of PSN money.2011-07-22 21:36:00

I'm pretty sure the next kind of game they'll release is going to be great. They can't fill LBP's cup to the brim. I feel good that they're starting fresh, and still paying attention to LBP.2011-07-22 23:08:00

@AarontheEpic

No one ever said that you needed to...

You have 2 options; you spend $100+ on the DLC, or you don't spend $100+ on the DLC

Was LBP2 a test then? I ask this simply because they are already leaving it behind to work on a new game. Did they make LBP2 partly to see what type of levels the public favor.2011-07-23 20:36:00

No, Move support you probably gonna get for free, pack will only give you Move specific gadgets for your level + soem stuff that won't need Move, you will be able to get Move pack without Move but level for it's level you will need one, but there a walk abound, you can get friend with Move and play with him. We still don't know the full content list of Move pack.

Test for what? ;p they not leaving LBP2, Move pack is comeing, there other compies that will deliv DLC and i bet they will fix any critical bugs if it happen.

Very huge reminder they worked on LBP2 when you been playing LBP1, did you noticed any difference? probably no, so you will feel that way with LBP2

We still don't know the full content list of Move pack.

Wrong. it's a preliminary release, but still:

Here?s all there details that are within the DLC Move Pack:

New Power-Up ? The Manipulator

The Manipulator is a new hat that Sackboy can wear that whilst active will allow him to pick up and move any grabbable object using the PlayStation Move, provided that the object is not too heavy and that Sackboy himself is not standing on the object.

New Tool ? The Movinator

Essentially the PlayStation Move equivilant of The Controlinator.

Contains a fully customisable layout of the PlayStation Move that can be used to map your own controls and functions to it, in exactly the same way as you would with the DualShock and The Controlinator.

New Tool ? Move Cursor

This new tool allows a creator to create their own custom in-game cursors whilst using the PlayStation Move.

You can use any in-game, DLC or custom Sticker during your cursor creation and you can also toggle whether the cursor can pick things up, can move in and out, whether grabbable objects will be highlighted upon hovering over them and whether the cursor requires a tag to be active.

New Tool ? Move Paint

This is a big one!
Move Paint will allow you to create your own custom stickers using the PlayStation Move!
There?s an assortment of brush types and a wide colour palette available whilst painting.

These Stickers will also have transparent backgrounds, so you?re no longer restricted to the same old rectangular custom stickers! Additionally you can paste in other Stickers during your creation and edit them accordingly.

This Tool can infact be used during Create Mode and Single Player Play Mode.

New Tool ? Move Recorder

Much like the previous Sackbot Recording tools, this tool will allow you to record any motion caused by using the PlayStation Move and then can be set to playback for your movie-making, level creation purposes.
Similarly these recordings can be set to loop and and have their speeds adjusted.

New Sensor ? Speed Sensor

Can sense speed and you can toggle whether to sense the speed of only one direction or to allow all directions.

New Sensor ? Rotation Sensor

Can sense rotations and again you can toggle whether to sense rotation in only one direction or in both directions.

New Sensor ? Angle Sensor

Can be set to sense something within a specified angle.

New Material Type ? Sticker Panel Material

This is another huge addition to the PlayStation Move Create DLC Pack!
You can set the colour and transparency of this Material.

So ssentially you can use this is an opaque version of the Hologram Material.
Meaning that no longer will your in-game sprites and other Hologram-based creations will have that semi-transparent look about them.

On top of that though, you can set the Mateiral to be completely transparent too.
Which makes it perfect for some aspects of Sticker placement.

New Score Giver Tweak ? Score Multiplier

In the Score Giver, you can now tweak to enable or disable multipliers for your creation.

Other Notable Highlights From The Community GameJame

In-Game Store Overhaul

The in-game Store has had a major overhaul and DLC is now arranged in the order of Level Packs, Downloaded Packs and Outfits. In turn, each of these tabs are now listed alphabetically.

Selecting a Level Pack will open that Pack?s level selection.

Selecting a Downloaded Pack will display a list of all the costume pieces, stickers and objects contained within the pack.
Each costume piece can be individually selected from this list and placed on your Sackboy.

Outfits is the recognisable list of complete Outfits for your Sackboy to wear.

Move Pack Level Rundown

This is just a quick count of the level?s contained within the Move Pack, although please be aware that since I was playing an earlier version of the pack, this could still be subject to some change before release.

1 x Introduction Level
4 x Main Story Levels
1 x Boss Level
7 x Side Levels
1 x Tutorial Level for one of the above mention Side Levels
2 x Versus Levels
2 x Cutscene Levels

Total New Levels = 18

New Music Sequencer Instruments

At the Community GameJam, there were an additional 17 new Music Sequencer Instruments.

However again, these were very much in a developmental stage still and may be subject to some change before release.

New Tool - Material Slicer

Using this tool, you can cut through any object. It works much like "connect the dots", where you are in control over where the dots appear, and then the game slices the object accordingly.
Sliced pieces continue to be glued together after the slice, but their complexity can hereby easily reduced. This is very useful for those objects who have become "too complex" or are nearing that state.

New Player Sensor Tweak - Detect Unspawned Players

Player Sensors can now be set to "Detect Unspawned Players". This can be very useful for triggering opening cinematics, only when every player in a session has successfully entered the level.

New Grab Sensor Tweaks

You can now choose to tweak whether the sensor activates when grabbed by a Sackperson/Sackbot, by the Move Wand or both.
You can also cause objects carrying the Sensor to glow slightly when you hover the Move Cursor over said object.

New Material Tweaker Tweak

The Material Tweaker can now select whether an object is grabable by a Sackperson/Sackbot, by the Move Wand or by both.

Are you sure you know what you posting? That list is content what Jam people has been seen in version that they had, they not been inform which things is just an update and which thing is part of Move Pack, there for we don't know what Move Pack will really contain or not (ofcorse all move stuff will be included in it). I belive and latest 1.05 even prove that with Toy Story gibberish saounds, MM can't block off tweaks with DLC, which means thingsl ike score multiplier will most likely coem as an update. I would not be sure about sensor either since there function has not much to do with Move.

In fact it's not "preliminary release" is something that StevenI write up and as beta pertisipend i can say it's in-complete (thru only few minor features)

Again, I'm gonna repeat myself from another post.

Stepping away does not = no longer supporting LBP.
where do some of you people learn to read? MM already said
they won't be stopping support for LBP.
they are just not putting as much attention as they were before on it.
and you guys do know that It's not even the main MM group themselves
most of the time who fixes the bugs right?
that's a different sub-team that do it from what i heard.
basically LBP will be supported mainly by all the
different sub-teams from now on. So you guys need to stop your worrying so much.
*mew

And also like Shadow said, the Move content list was made from a incomplete beta version
of the move pack, we have no real idea of everything it'll hold in the end.

also like i was saying, LBP from now on will pretty much be getting all it's support from
different sub-teams... MM themselves never supported the games just by themselves.
far as i ever understood it. *mew

WOW I have mixed feelings about this. I'm happy for them but at the same time, I HATE THEM. Its like I can actually feel them watching over the LBP servers...it just won't be the same without Mm.2011-08-08 18:04:00

Worse comes to worst, the LittleBigPlanet IP is passed to one of the other, smaller companies that helped Mm with the game in the first place, like Tarsier or Supermassive. And they're nice people too - as I recall, Tarsier's handling the LBP Vita experience. :B2011-08-09 19:22:00

LBP IS OKAY for now but i wont pay for anything from a different developer till reviews of their game come out because i don't' like playing the same game series by different developers its like reading a fan-fic its just not the same idea anymore, unless MM publishes then it might be ok the server will be fine but i doubt the next game will be2011-08-12 18:28:00
