Stupid Winches

Archive: 11 posts

Hey everyone..

I'm a fairly new member here.. and I mostly just lurk the forums for information I might find useful. I'm embarrassed though; this is my SECOND thread asking for help in only 3 threads. Truth is though, I have no friends who play LBP1 that are any good at creating, so I have to take it out on this forum. (And yes, I did post in the Find Other Happy Gadders forum)

Anyway, enough with that chit-chat. What I'm essentially doing is creating a series on LBP1. After spending three weeks on the first part in the series, I'm finally done. (Woohoo) I started work on the second part recently, and I figured it would be more logical to make the boss fight first, so I don't run out of thermo. I have this fight all planned out and such. For the first phase of the fight, the boss will have three attacks, as defined by the magnetic switches in the picture below. The first three magnetic switches correspond to the Logic that make his attacks work. The fourth and final magnetic switch RESETS the phase if the player has failed to complete the phase in the amount of time it takes for the boss to go through all of his attacks. The fourth magnetic switch simply pulls on the winch on the left attached to the magnetic key to do so.

My problem however, getting the boss to start his attacks in the first place. I have a motion sensor that is wired to a permanent switch that is on directional. This connects to the winch in a manner that activates it and makes it move through the system, thereby activating the attacks. The motion sensor is on the ground floor with the boss, to detect the player. For some strange reason, the winch won't move.

I have set my winches to be the same maximum length and minimum length, and nothing is glued. The winch that goes through the attacks is set to 20 seconds. (For experimentation) The winch that resets the attacks is set to .01 seconds. Therefore, upon reaching the fourth magnetic switch, it goes back to the start in a mere instant. I have attempted to toggle EVERYTHING I could think of. I looked at the Set-Reset switches' settings and attempted to understand why my device was not working, despite its strong similarity.

Anybody have any ideas what could be causing the problem?

P.S. If you actually care enough to see it that this problem gets fixed, you can always add me on PSN and I'll take you right into the action. (Heck, you'll even get a sneak peek of the series that I've been working on for so long)

Please do ignore the little blocks in the way of the winches' path. That was just so I could get an accurate radius set for each magnetic switch. >_<

What is the winch for?2011-07-20 03:45:00

The winch is to move the magnetic key to the right, so it goes into the radius of the 4 switches, one by one. Each one of the switches will have a different output. (Which is the various attacks of the boss)2011-07-20 03:55:00

Is your fourth magnetic switch set to directional or on/off? If your "reset" winch is too strong it won't be able to be pulled by the slower, weaker winch. I suspect this is what might be happening.2011-07-20 03:59:00

I believe that my reset winch is stronger than the weaker one, which moves it to the right. Doesn't your reset winch have to be stronger though, in order to pull it back?

On second thought... Winches can only pull. So wouldn't that mean it would not matter what the winch pulling it to the right's strength is? And I do believe that the fourth magnetic key is set to On/Off. I can hop on PSN right now and invite you if that'd be easier.

Thank you so much for your reply!

I tried that, same problem. I'll have to give it another shot tomorrow.

Well, if your magnetic switch is set to On/Off, there is your problem. A winch that is set to "Off" will not pull an object inward, but it will still exert a force on the object it's attached to, and that will keep it from being pulled outward; thus keeping it in place. It needs to be set to directional somehow so that both winches are moving in the same direction (i.e. the reset winch must be "pushing" while the regular winch is "pulling").

Ah... I can't believe I overlooked such a simple concept! Of course the winch on the right cannot move if the winch opposing its motion is set to On/Off and the Magnetic Key Switch is not active (Therefore off)... I'll just have to tweak it to directional and it should work?

That should work I think. At maximum speed I think a nudge might be enough to send the winch back to the start, but if not you'll need to set it up so that your fourth switch activates the reset winch for more than an instant (you'll need to make a "delay switch" for this).

I've got it working. Thanks a ton!
