Need help with my roller coaster!

Archive: 5 posts

I haven't been on LBPC for a while, but I've got myself a little problem with an epic roller coaster I've been making...

I decided to make it a launch coaster, so I've got a flawless launch system working just fine. The "wheels" on the roller coaster are circles of sponge material set to 0% friction so they slide along the track like wheels. There are wheels on both sides of the track, so that the roller coaster doesn't fly off on top of a hill.

So far, it works like a dream except for just one problem: for some unknown reason, on certain parts of the track, the roller coaster just stops and keeps going at a much slower speed, as if it hit a bump in the track. However, I checked the track and there are no imperfections at all. If I try changing the launch speed, then it stops at different locations instead, and my roller coaster can't keep going due to the sudden speed change. If I try taking off the bottom wheels that keep the coaster from flying off the track, then it doesn't hit the bumps, but it can't go over the hills without flying off the track, so that's obviously not the solution.

Does anybody know why this is happening? Do you have any advice to help me fix it?

Hi
Hmm, it might be the material the wheels or track are made from, even though you have a material tweaker on them at 0 friction.
Roller coasters can be tricky. It sounds like, even though the track looks smooth, there are slight angles where the wheels are getting stuck.
Whatever way your doing the launch speed it sounds like sometimes the turning/moving forward angle is off (so instead of the wheels following the line of the track, they are hitting the track at a 'stopping' angle (it may even only be by a pixel, but its enough to stop things running smoothly)

You could try-
1. Change all the surfaces (and wheels to a more smooth material (like glass).
2. Remake all the track sections using the small grid and the 5 degree angle turned on- this will allow for a more gradual curve
3. When making the curve, make it as a huge block of material (maybe like 8x8 large blocks), and then cut out a large circle from the centre, so you have a large section where the circle curve is. Then copy that section and move it off to one side.
now test to see will your coaster make it all the way round the curve. If it starts hitting angles, select and copy the section you put to the side and drag the copu exactly over the curve in place and rotate it by 5 degrees and paste it down and this will smooth the steepness of the angles.
4. Plkace Material tweeker on the track part itself too and put on 0 friction.
Hope that helps

I tried changing the wheels to glass, but it didn't really help. It just did the same thing. I also tried setting the track to 0% friction, but it did the same thing. I suppose I could try making the track out of glass instead of light brass.

And I have, in fact, been making the curves out of circle shapes, so the curves aren't the problem.

Also, I'm pretty sure it doesn't have to do with imperfections in the track itself, since it stops at completely different places under different circumstances.

Ummm... just a thought. If the gap between the upper and lower wheels are not large enough, it might be you are pinching or binding when going around sharper turns. This could be more apparent if you have multiple cars hooked together.2011-07-17 22:01:00

I made sure that there's plenty of space between the wheels, and all of my turns are the same size, so that's not the problem.
