New Tool - Flipper

Archive: 20 posts

You know what would be useful? A tool that flips an object around. It would be very useful for sprite-based levels. Here's my idea for it's tweaks.

Flip Direction

Relative Horizontal (flips in the opposite direction the object is currently facing horizontally)
Relative Vertical (flips in the opposite direction the object is currently facing vertically)
Left
Right
Up
Down

Flip Logic with Object (default off)

Effect

None (object just instantly flips)
Rotate (shows the object rotate to the other direction)
Fade (object quickly fades to the other direction)
2D Flip (object flips around Paper-Mario style)

If the object is too close to something it could get stuck in, you cannot flip the object.

What do you guys think?

A good platforming element too. I can think of a couple of good uses for it.2011-07-16 14:42:00

I like the idea, but couldn't you just press the R-Stick to flip it backwards???2011-07-16 15:58:00

No no no, not flipping an object while creating. I'm talking about a new logic tool that flips objects around during gameplay.

Nice idea. I like it!

I can see the community making a lot of gameplay ideas from this, as well as some mechanical scenery with the 3D-rotating affect. Maybe you could also choose the point of a 'pivot', where you can choose a certain place in the boundaries of the object where it shall stay put. It'll be able to snap to the centre of the object too, for convienience. It could make up for the left/right up/down option, since it chooses which direction for it to flip and how far it flips. Maybe a Local Space too. :3

It's difficult to think of what category this gadget's place is, although it might have to be the object tweakers section. Again, good idea.

Small problem though, everything in LBP is made keeping in mind that the player will never see the back of it. So the whole 3D flip thing is out, unless Mm will re-do everything in LBP so that it has a back side. Turning an object 180 is not inverting anyway. Quite honestly I can't see too many useful ways to implement this in to a level though. Sprites don't really need to be flipped because all you have to do is invert it in create and have that version light up, like we have been doing since the beta.2011-07-16 23:20:00

Well, if it flips in a 3D rotation way then it can just replicate a flipped version of the front of the object. I think all visual shapes in LBP do not have a 'back' of an object since it doesn't have to be seen, if that is what you think the problem is.

I suppose that making a 3D rotate affect could be quite tricky for Mm to make, since they have to make the object shift around in an angle, and that it has to be possible with every single shape creatable.

Guys, I said 2D flip. It flips around like it's as thin as paper. It flips Paper Mario-style.2011-07-17 13:15:00

Doesn't even need a new tool for this TBH;
They could just tweak the movers to have a "Flip Object" setting - that allows the object to flip in the direction the mover making it move;
Or have it in the "Material Tweaker" as an option.

Very much DO want though - would be very handy for creating custom characters that point the direction they are moving, instead of walking backwards.

Yeah I think he means it would simply flip like it would in create mode, except as a gameplay element in create mode. This would be interesting, but I doubt it would work since there's no telling how big of objects people would place it on and whether or not that would lag the game too much.2011-07-17 17:20:00

Been wanting this for a long time...
emitting a filliped version of a object has mega problems.
like if something gets in the way while it's emitting.

but hopefully something like what you said would work.

It sounds good on paper but in a level it would hardly ever be in the perfect position to flip (different gradients, obstacles, contact with player)2011-07-17 19:29:00

My brother Terbas was suggesting this earlier. I too think it'd be very nice. It would also reduce the sticker load for such games.

Hmmmm.. If.. If.. the flip object is too hard (just as why we cannot have objects size changes during play, probably due to limitations of the physics engine), they could at least allow UV-texture flip! (not quite as useful as object flip, tho much easier to implement)

Oh, btw, object flipping / resizing might be allowed for non-physics objects maybe? (hologram and the upcoming sticker panel). Of course, if the collision detection performance would be affected, such objects could disable the collision tag.)

If they can implement it like they implemented the layer changes to objects (Ie: instant change but the animation is still there) then i don't see a problem :/2011-07-20 07:25:00

sounds neat. I've always wanted to know what the back of a creatinator looks like...2011-07-20 15:05:00

umm the same but pointing the other way? xD
the filliping talked about here is the same as when you flip something yourself in create mode.

The flip idea seems like it would be more trouble then its worth. It sounds like a whole lotta bug testing.2011-07-23 07:07:00

I haven't experimented with this yet, but we may already be able to create a flip function using gyroscopes. There's a certain level I once hearted (I think I unhearted it now though.) which had a working flip feature.2011-07-26 04:55:00
