BLOCKS [1 PLAYER ONLY] Puzzle/Platform/Exploration level

Archive: 29 posts

Hello fellow creators,

I've just release the final version of my new level, called BLOCKS. It's a puzzle, platformer and exploration level set in a nice silouhette visual style.

It's an entry for the planetarium creation contest, and the rules about this contest were that the level must feature grabinator gameplay and the training shoe object, so expect both .

I have done a beta, but some nasty bugs or visual glitch can remain in this final version. Also I'm wondering about the difficulty and visual clues to solve puzzle. Is there enough hints on how the blocks behave ? Are the puzzle too easy, too hard ? If you're stuck at one point, where is it ?

Well, enough talking, here is the level link :

And here are some screenshots :

Here is a short video from the level played and recored by koltonaugust that show the Blocks mechanics (Thanks a lot !) :

I hope you'll enjoy the level ! Please leave me a link if you want me to return the F4F favor !

Thanks,

I'll give it a go, and edit this post with my response. Please check out my level, too?

https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=59923-FFVII-Cloud-Sackbot-Demo!

EDIT: Alrighty, played the level.

I gotta say, it's very well done. Lighting's great, the puzzles are clever and work well, secrets are nice, and it's fun!
One of the earlier puzzles(the left/right panel that you use the first type of block to stick to) messed up a tiny bit when I attached to it while it was going left - it didn't go right for a bit, started going left again(though already at the wall, so staying still), then finally went right. It's a minor gripe, though, you did this very well.

Oh, and maybe a checkpoint midway through the "shoe" section. One of the hills when you use the light-blue shoe really makes it hard to jump out onto the appearing platforms, and could mess a few people up.

Keep up the good work!

@Derejin : Thanks ! This blue moving platform is one of my biggest issue in the level. I'll change it. I have recently seen the speed sensor tutorial from comphermc and i thinks i'll use a piston instead of a mover, this will probably solve a lots of bugs about this moving platform.

About the "hill" during the shoe section, I think I see what you mean, i will maybe make it a little lower to avoid this. I really like the fact that you have to go though each colored shoe section in one time. It's not really difficult, so I'm still wondering if i'll had a checkopint.

Anyway, thanks for your feedback, the yay and the heart !

@Jedibrad : I'm looking forward your feedback

Hey there! I'm going to review your level now!

Positive:
+ the level was interesting to play, very original.
+ gameplay mechanics were very fun to play with
+ I really liked the flow of the level with taking another box each time and searching for the extra points!
+ the level looks fantastic!

Negative:
- i didn't like the look of the boxes, they were to big and you couldn't adapt to them. Maybe make em smaller or give em another shape!
- the way you get the boxes is quite frustating, the level switches to slow, aybe you should have some sort of grabber chooses, place a sponge and set the grabswitch on it, then place the choosethingy. That would be much easier to grab your block
- (minor) you should place another setpoint at the end with the white shoes, finishing 3 parts with 1 checkpoint is just to much

Verdict:
7/10, it was fun to play thriugh but it still needs some adapting before it becomes a true masterpiece!

Btw, i tweeked my boss fight a bit, now there isn't an odd detection sound. But the boss laughing is actually the boss screaming hehe, i hope you liked my feedback bye!

Okay then, got around to playing it, finally. x.x

So, that was epic. Great, original ideas. Was really fun to play!

At the end, I didn't get what the shoes were about... Was just kinda random. It was also bad that there was only like 1 checkpoint at the end... Ya die once, and you have to do the same thing all over again...

I really loved the idea of switching what the blocks did by pressing a button. Very fresh and original.

Any chance of a BLOCKS 2?

Because, I'd love to see more!

Oh, yes, and when the holograms are fading on.... I noticed a problem. They all start on white, when off. Make it so it's the same color on and off.

This makes the fading a lot more... Smooth. That's just about my only complaint!

Wonderful work, can't wait to see more from you!

(I loved your Magnet level btw! )

Ok, I've made a small update on the level. I've made the blocks a little smaller (not too small) and you can now easily jump on the top them, where it was difficult before. The blocks dispenser also now have the grab switch, you were right, it's an easier way to select your block color. I've also added the checkpoint everyone ask for , and change the holo color to make a smoother transition when you light them up. The difficult jump in the final sequence was made more easy to avoid a cheap death at this point.

Thank you everyone for your nice feedback !

Jedibrad, I don't know if i'll work on a BLOCKS 2 level. I do have some ideas but... Well i guess I want to do something different for now, enough of silouhette 2D . Maybe later !

thanks also Jedibrad for trying and loving my LittleBigMagnet level.

I'm glad you enjoyed the level, thanks again for your helpful and nice feedback !

The visuals here weren't exactly blow-me-away eye candy, but they were adequately functional to the gameplay and it was the gameplay that really made this level shine. You have invented a fun, original and brain tickling game mechanic with a steady learning curve and a progressive difficulty level. I really enjoyed just taking my time, messing around and experimenting with "what happens if", which is probably why I found all the secrets on my first playthrough. The only bit that got me a little narked was the section immediately after the area where the number of secrets found is shown to you. I couldn't figure out what to do with the blue shoe, and after trying this that and the other with it, I eventually said to hell with this, abandoned the shoe and jumped across the first firepit. Tricky, but possible when you jump from the very edge, although I'm guessing I probably cheated doing it that way. That was the only issue I had though, and overall I thought this was a really fun and innovative level. Nice job.2011-07-17 20:59:00

Thanks for your feedback.

You're quite right about the visuals. I'm not really good when it comes to create stunning and amazing sceneries, so I try to make simple visuals. I'm really glad you liked the gameplay. I've spend hours trying to find the good behavior of the blocks, making the red one destroy the others when it explodes next to them, adjusting the blue so it can stick to moving platforms and not only walls, etc. Congratulations for finding all the secrets ! They are not really difficult to find, one or two can be tricky but nothing impossible if you want to find them.

About the blue shoe thing, you just had to grab it and jump to stick it to the pice of wall hanging from the ceiling. I'll add visual clues if it's not clear that the blue shoe can be glued to that wall. Or maybe it didn't worked well ?

I did that, but nothing happened. The shoe stuck to the vertical blue ledge, but it didn't move, change or activate anything. In the pic you posted, it looks like the blue ledge is much further out over the firepit than it was for me. When I played, the ledge was suspended at an angle pointing towards the checkpoint and hanging directly above the rocky outcrop that the checkpoint rests upon.

Just checked it out now, really enjoyed it, very clever (probably more than my brain should be handling at this hour!). I thought visually it was fine, you don't want to over complicate things and the finish is clean and transitions smooth.

I'd play a #2 for sure

Wow this needs more plays if i had a level lobby i would put this in it!! I didn't really pick up on the hints of how the blocks behave I just experimented with them until i figured it out. It wasn't ever frustrating but it was definitely a good challenge. Like others said before the shoe part at the end threw me for a loop for a second just because it was a sudden change from the other puzzles. But I realized pretty quick that the shoes had the same powers as the blocks, they were the same colors (i picked up on that hint ^^) I enjoyed the level of difficulty and all the cleverly hidden secrets. Good luck with the contest i hope you get the recognition you deserve for your level!2011-07-18 07:40:00

Your stuff is always fun to play. I'm in! I usually read a thread before posting anything but I saw people are having trouble with a shoe so I'll stop reading and play to see if it causes men issues... I also saw your stick figure pics on Littlebigplanetarium so I'll be interested to revisit them and see the evolution!2011-07-18 08:08:00

@Masseyf : thanks ! Glad you enjoyed it ! #2 is not on my plans yet but as you're not the first to talk about it and considering the great reception this level has, I will consider working on it soon

@K3NDRAKRAY : Glad you liked it and thank you very much for your kind words ! Congrats on trying the level without looking at the background tips.

@Mr_Fusion : thanks ! If I'm not too lazy I will maybe add more sketches from my notepad on a blog entry, but what you were able to see was
1- the roadmap of the level. A new sequence appeard between 5/6 and sequences 7,8,9 drastically changes as the yellow block was not what it is today. And sequence 12 is longer than planned, but still the idea remains the same.
2 - Some puzzle ideas. One of the three is not on the final level as it was for the first yellow block idea.

Thanks again everyone for the great reception you made to this level

Thanks for the feedback of Cybernetic Adventures Epsilon. That was a very intriguing silhouette level.

VISUALS:
The silhouette visuals looked very cool. Also, the neon shoes are well made. Good job using the movie camera as a flat 2D camera.

SOUND:
Great use of an interactive music, and "Whoever Brings The Night" is a smart music choice to pick at the last part of the level (even if there aren't bosses in this level)

GAMEPLAY:
The various use of the colored blocks are unique as you use them stick, explode, freeze, and have it make platforms appear. About the one with the blue shoe, the moving platform got stuck to the left after sticking it a few times, but I managed to cross it after the right jump timing without using the blue shoe.

OVERALL:
An great platforming level with solid ideas. A yay and heart.

I am unsure of the brief for the competition that this level is for, but I thoroughly enjoyed playing this level. Great puzzles without being too hard. Some puzzl levels can be overly tricky that they become frustrating very quickly, but not this one. I enjoyed every moment of it. Visually very well presented as well.
Smiley faced and hearted.

Queued up! I'll be sure to review it ASAP!

EDIT:
I just played this level and it was really fun!

The puzzles were challenging, but not hard. The gameplay was good fun, and the gameplay was unique from any other level I've played. The hidden treasures increase the replay value, and they weren't easy to find

I've played plent of silhouette themed levels, but none them nearly as good as this

And I loved the end where all hell breaks loose, though I'm somewhat conufsed... Is this like a evil shoe factory?

I played this level. Some great puzzle action. I got stuck at the puzzle where you have to ascend and there are two black barriers blocking you. Right around where you start using the Yellow Block. I put one block on the red button to open up one, but I could not open the other.

Graphics were simplistic, but fit well for this level. I did enjoy this puzzle game. I am going to attempt it again. If I complete it, I may edit this post with more feedback.

Thanks both of you for your feedback

@Crazed Creator : it's kind of an abstract level, so you can interpret the end as you want . I like the evli shoe factory interpretation

@Garak : I see where you got stuck. May I suggest the use of a yellow block to stay between the barriers, and the use of a red block to push on the button ?

Thanks for playing my level.
I'd tried this level a little while ago but got a little confused about where to go and gave up.
I've just played it again though and managed to complete it.
Overall a fun level and has a few puzzley moments that I enjoyed.
It was good that you had to think about which colour to use for each bit.
It was also good that you had to use more than one different colour to progress in some parts.

Its worthy of a heart as I like levels with originality

Thanks for your feedback. May I ask you where you were confused during your first try ? Now the contest is over, I can edit the level and add bubbles/visual clues to guide the player.

Anyway thanks for the heart, I'm glad you liked it !

I think it was the part with the blue thing that moves from left to right.
I fell down to the earlier part of the level but didnt realise that I had been there before.
I was wandering around not knowing where I was supposed to go.
It was probably just me being stupid

Thought that I should mention that the sketches are really interesting when compared to the level! The shoe part actually made sense also. I know it was an issue but I think it's balanced pretty well although I kept trying to grab the yellow shoes rather than standing on it.
