Eagle vision!

Archive: 8 posts

Hiya guys,
I am making an Assassin's Creed level at the moment, and one of the features I would like to implement on the Ezio sackbot is eagle vision. However, I haven't the faintest idea as to how to create it. The things that I want it to highlight are enemies, hidden doors/pathways and haystacks.
If you have any ideas could you please reply, and please explain the logic in noob friendly terms!

Just create a holographic version of whatever you want highlighted with it's brightness set to zero, then just assign a controller button to turn the brightness up. 2011-07-15 11:07:00

You could also darken the level a bit by a global light tweaker and activate (invisible) LED lights everywhere to highlight points of interest. Objects like bots cannot have LED lights attached, so you'd have to use a holographic follower on those.2011-07-15 12:45:00

Hi what you could do is make a holographic version (representation) of an enemy in a thin layer. Like in AC, You could make it red. you could do the same for hidden doors etc.
For passages and doors you could use maybe make the holographic blue or something

Ok so you have a holographic of the enemy. On this place a follower that will follow a tag on this sackbot that the holo will follow (you will need to have the holo on the holographic follow only this sackbot (instead of colours, use labels- eg. CreedEnemy1,CreedEnemy2, Passage1, etc.) although the followers would only need to apply to enemies as they are moving.

How it will work-
when you place an enemy, place the holo representation over him with the follower positioned so it maps over his boddy, so it will follow just him.
On a chip on the players bot, have it so that when you presss the triangle button, a wire comes off triangle connected to the holoblock on the enemy.
Therefore, when triangle is not pressed the holo is 'off', but when it IS pressed, it will activote the holo and the red glow will show up.
To do multiple enemies in the same way to show up just run additional wires to the other bots holographics or passages.

You can elaborate on masking it work better, but that should give the desired effect, or point you along the right road.
Just remember that each enemy will need a different tag label that thier particular follower can follow or the holos will follow the wrong sackbots

ADDITIONAL-
If you want the enemy or passages, doors etc., hidind behind walls or that, what you could do, is place the holo that follows the enemy to the very front thin layer, and on the holo make it so it cant change layers.
This way the holographic will always be visible as its the first layer.
If you wantr the 'Eagle Vision to work as an On'Off effect, Connect the Triangle button to a TOGGLE and the toggle (set to off) to the various henemies holo blocks
Hope this helps

How is it that you were able to edit your initial post 37 minutes ago, but not 29 minutes ago?

EDIT:
If I were to use your approach, I would also make the logic wireless. This makes it easier to adapt for new enemies/ points of interest along the way as the level is being built

As a matter of fact, I think all regulars on the Help and Tutorials forums should agree among each other to advice wireless methods as a default. If there isn't a best practices logic thread, well there should be and this one should be in it. Go ahead and beat me to it, else I wil see what I can start tonight.
