Spore Pirated

Archive: 5 posts

EA's Spore topped the list of most pirated video games for 2008, according to TorrentFreak.

Spore suffered from a serious PR problem when Electronic Arts introduced an archaic DRM technology that infuriated thousands of users and led to a piracy tsunami. EA, however, said the downloads didn't hurt Spore sales.

Most people agree that EA's heavy-handed DRM helped to push Spore to the top of the list. The initial outrage (500k downloads in the first 10 days) was obviously curtailed over the next several months, but these download numbers are still quite astounding.

1. Spore (1,700,000)
2. The Sims 2 (1,150,000)
3. Assassins Creed (1,070,000)
4. Crysis (940,000)
5. Command & Conquer 3 (860,000)
6. Call of Duty 4 (830,000)
7. GTA San Andreas (740,000)
8. Fallout 3 (645,000)
9. Far Cry 2 (585,000)
10. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (470,000)

Note: the number in parenthesis is the estimated

It does make you wonder if DRM is worth the cost of its development.2008-12-15 09:37:00

It does make you wonder if DRM is worth the cost of its development.

I can honestly say it probably isn't worth the cost. Dedicated pirates defeat any and all attempts at software-based anti-piracy within a week at most. What's more, the current trend in DRM solutions is actually very invasive (bordering on virus-like behavior such as using OS exploits and backdoors!) and encourages people to pirate games!

True story : With the latest expansions of The Sims 2, I've found myself with SecuROM (a DRM software) installed on my computer. Prior to my doing extended research on DRM, I would not even have known this.

My gf was complaining that the game would not run properly, and indeed almost every time I tried to run the game it would say "Please insert the original Sims 2 CD and not a backup" which made no sense because I was putting in the correct CD. I concluded that there was a problem with my DVD drive and was about to replace it when I heard about the Spore DRM debacle.

Through research and testing, I learned that because I had legitimate CD/DVD writing software on my computer, SecuROM would actually hack my drivers to make the DVD drive unable to read the Sims 2 CD (apparently, to prevent my making a copy of the CD), all the while keeping me in the dark and thinking I had a problem with my drive.

In the end I was forced to install an *illegal* noCD patch in order to play my *legal, bought* copy of Sims 2. I would imagine more informed people would simply have downloaded the game instead of going through the hassle of buying it and having to deal with DRM. If the point was to discourage piracy, I think they've missed their mark by a mile and a half.
