30 years too old for gaming????

According to Kathy Lee on the Today show, gamers that are 30 or older are weird. Do you think 30 is too old to play games??? The Relationship Experts of the Today Show Don?t Think Men in Their 30s Should Play Video Games (http://kotaku.com/5820060/the-relationship-experts-of-the-today-show-dont-think-men-in-their-30s-should-play-video-games) | 2011-07-13 16:49:00 Author: Godzilla Posts: 224 |
Of course it is. The TV said so. | 2011-07-13 16:50:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
Yes, you should be doing more wholesome things, like watching people on television talking about video games. Obviously. | 2011-07-13 16:56:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
I find it entertaining how the article says that the age of the average gamer is 37 years old. LOL | 2011-07-13 16:56:00 Author: Godzilla Posts: 224 |
Hey, not all old people are biddies confused by them noisy electronic thingies with the button whatdoyoucallits and speaky-headphone dohickeys. This is just a case of somewhat old fashioned old people telling slightly more modern old people they're not cool. My gran plays Bejeweled and a few other games, aged 70 and she's way cooler than these orange dunces. | 2011-07-13 17:14:00 Author: Ostler5000 Posts: 1017 |
NO YOU ARE NOT TOO OLD TO BE PLAYING GAMES IN YOUR 30'S, I WILL STILL BE WHEN I TURN 30 AND IF YOU LIKE GAMES THEN KEEP PLAYING, EVEN IF YOUR'RE 50, KEEP PLAYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nuff said | 2011-07-13 17:15:00 Author: zzmorg82 Posts: 948 |
Who is Kathy Lee? ...and why is someone watching the Today show! Evil stuff! Wash your eyes out now! lol Sounds like the weird one to me is Kathy Lee. There is nothing wrong with playing a few games here and there.. as long as you are not ignoring other stuff that needs done like I do. | 2011-07-13 17:30:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Kathy Lee is one to be calling someone weird. That woman is a fruitcake. My Dad is in his 60's and plays, he's better at Gran Turismo than I am. I had taken my kids to the Doctor the other day and there was this woman in the waiting room, looked to be in her 60's, playing games on her Iphone and we started talking. She is 84! She was using her iphone better than me. she was whipping through pictures showing my kids and whatnot. 84 years old. Nothing wrong with playing games at later stages in life, as long as you don't let them consume you. | 2011-07-13 17:47:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |
I'm 33. Looks like I didn't make the cut. | 2011-07-13 17:50:00 Author: schm0 Posts: 1239 |

Lol. Someone should introduce these people to the 21st century. Also, am I the only one who feels dumber from having listened to the clip? Once again, I'm glad I no longer have cable TV. | 2011-07-13 18:46:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
Also, am I the only one who feels dumber from having listened to the clip? Once again, I'm glad I no longer have cable TV. I refused to look at the clip. My brain feels so happy right now. lol | 2011-07-13 18:58:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
My IQ just dropped after watching that. And as everyone knows, gamers always stay in basements | 2011-07-13 19:08:00 Author: jeperty Posts: 486 |
The average gamer is a 34 year old male. They are the generation that the entire games industry has been aimed at. They are the first generation who grew up with home consoles. It is their disposable income that keeps the entire games industry afloat. .... It would be weird if they didn't play them. Edit: I just watched the clip! .... I think my brain just fell out of my ear. There should be a viewer warning! | 2011-07-13 19:36:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
Age doesn't matter. I bet Kathy plays Black Ops | 2011-07-13 23:10:00 Author: PSN:AAM2730 Posts: 128 |
Darn. I am 30. I guess its time to get rid of my consoles. (Sarcasm) On second thought, i am used to being weird so i will keep them. | 2011-07-13 23:14:00 Author: Godzilla Posts: 224 |
The end made me freak out a little... :S And no, it's fine to play video games in your 30's. They are the weird ones. | 2011-07-13 23:42:00 Author: abyssalassassin Posts: 717 |
Beh, as long as you like it, and want to do it, there's no real age limit to stuff liek that, what do they care if you play video games and what do you care what some random people on tv think, anyways? xD They don't know you, you don't know them, no need for their words to affect you unless you want them to. Besides, apparently that guy's anti-video games or something like that, so there's really no reason to listen to him, his argument is biased and controlled by mere personal opinion, don't let it get to you. | 2011-07-14 00:15:00 Author: Silverleon Posts: 6707 |
At least you have to actually do something such as think when playing games. If video games were full of commercials for 30% of the time then they wouldn't complain. I bet they played that Trojan pocket rocket commercial during all the breaks. And entertainment isn't supposed to be the most mature and responsible thing anyway. | 2011-07-14 01:16:00 Author: Morgalaga Posts: 164 |
Okay, I don't get this? Everybody has their own hobbies, some collect useless stuff, but it's their hobby and they like it, fine with me. People spend hours painting whether they're 50-10. Age doesn't matter at all. It's just a number in this situation. That was just a random fact just for a point "Painting".. xD People watch TV all the time, some watch Movies all the time, so what? They can be any age for that, if they like it, then that's fine, right? I don't see how age matters? I've met people on PSN that says they're like 30 or so, they're playing Little Big Planet! I don't see anything wrong with it, if they like it, if they actually enjoy it, and not using it as a chat room, if they are just using that as a chat room, that's when it gets to me and kinda scares me.. Also, with all these new TV shows, which 2 out of like 50 is actually worth watching, more people are getting into games, the music going all wacko isn't helping either So more people are getting into games since they've gotten so much better. LOL Black Ops? I'm sure she plays Grand Theft Auto and Little Big Planet And fits in time for Black Ops Anyone with me? | 2011-07-14 01:25:00 Author: Unknown User |
So I just watched the video personally.... ...and I think my IQ dropped by around 30 points. | 2011-07-14 17:27:00 Author: Veyneru Posts: 115 |
Fun fact, if the IQ of the people in the video dropped by 30 points, it would actually be negative... And possibly that would be something worth watching, just for simple curiosity... | 2011-07-14 17:30:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |

It's just the fact that people still see gaming as a "kids" hobby, and it really pees me off that they can't look past perceptions outdated by about 30-40 years. It concerns me that I actually want to get into the games industry as a designer when I'm older, I'm still curious if this will be a scenario in my near future. Me: What do you do for a living anyway? Person: I'm a teacher/doctor/secretary/police officer etc etc, what about you? Me: I create video games. Person: Bwahahhahahahhah! Wait, you're serious...? :O Me: Yeah, what's so funny about it? :/ Person: It's just that... video games are for little kids. Me: ..................... :@ | 2011-07-14 23:57:00 Author: abyssalassassin Posts: 717 |
I think this video pretty much sums up all my thoughts about it (not what the people on the show is saying, what the commentator is saying): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFD12zLZBNU | 2011-07-15 02:14:00 Author: Alec Posts: 3871 |
Oh well. Better tell that 66 year old guy to get rid of his train set "Its creepy". Why do people think its weird? Games arent aimed at specific age. Oh well, I suppose TV NEVER lies. | 2011-07-15 12:48:00 Author: craigmond Posts: 2426 |
Let's be honest... do we really care what non-gamers think of us gamers? And if so, why would you possibly care about this non-gamer's opinion? | 2011-07-15 12:55:00 Author: schm0 Posts: 1239 |
I've found that anyone over 30 that laughs about video games, basically suck at playing video games. Laughing at others that do play is simply their "sour grapes". They simply don't have the eye hand coordination or their brains cannot handle it. Though not as scientific of a study as seen on that Today show clip. | 2011-07-15 13:11:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
How much do they spend making/developing a video game? How much did they spend making/developing that banal talk show? Which one is more entertaining? Which one is more worthy of wasting your time on? I bet they haven't even picked up a controller in their lives It'd be like an illiterate person saying "Books, eh? What are they all about?! Waste of time if you ask me!" | 2011-07-15 13:35:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
I laughed when they said gamers live in basements. I guess it shows that they know what gaming and gamers are | 2011-07-15 13:48:00 Author: jeperty Posts: 486 |
I think this video pretty much sums up all my thoughts about it (not what the people on the show is saying, what the commentator is saying): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFD12zLZBNU That guy did a rebuttal to a discussion about violent video games on the Alan Titchmarsh show (a British talk show) where there were 3 guests invitd to discuss it, 1 of tem was pro-game and the other 2 were anti-game and it was very obviously biased against the pro-game guy. Saw it a while ago, it was even more idiotic than this "gamers are weird" thing on the Today show, amazingly. | 2011-07-15 16:37:00 Author: Veyneru Posts: 115 |
I find it hugely entertaining that whenever I'm playing LBP2 with my nan around she refuses to believe I'm "creating" something. She thinks that I'm simply dragging presets and templates and stuff. And whenever I say that I really want to work in the industry when I'm older she says that "it's a waste of time". I ignore her, at least my mum's pretty cool with the idea though. She's a little bit addicted to tennis/golf on Wii Sports and I can barely count the amount of times her bad hand eye co-ordination has sent the wiimote into my face on accident. Not to mention the fact that she's better than me on MarioKart Wii when she remembers to use the powerups. | 2011-07-15 23:31:00 Author: abyssalassassin Posts: 717 |
Everybody has their own life and opinions. There is nothing wrong with playing video games at 30..actually..scratch that, but just because they do that doesn't mean we should kill them or anything. This thread is all about opinion. | 2011-07-16 01:01:00 Author: Unknown User |
I'd hate to see what would happen if they start knocking on doors to confiscate game consoles from people +30. Especially if they knock on my door. | 2011-07-16 01:51:00 Author: TheCountessZ Posts: 537 |

I think I dislike the guy commentating on the videos even more than ignorant people trying to demonise games. | 2011-07-17 00:21:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |

The article said the average gamer is 37? I also read a similar report not that long ago... Hey, didn't like the early at home game console happen in or around the same time ago.... Any connection I wonder -_- News flash - we're living longer, working til we're older, brains getting bigger and "new age" trends can't stay "new age" forever. Don't be shocked when that report next year finds the average age to be a year older. Its happening, deal with it. | 2011-07-17 07:13:00 Author: Masseyf Posts: 226 |
Who cares if you play video games in your 30's!? I'm 14, and my mom used to play Final Fantasy X a LOT! But she had a nice (sorta...) relationship anyway. My belief is that it doesn't matter how old you are. It's okay unless you ignore your girlfriend/wife too much. And THOSE are my words of wisdom to you. | 2011-07-17 07:31:00 Author: sackboy7789 Posts: 280 |
I'm reminded of one of my favourite Sci-fi - Logan's Run. You have a life-clock in the palm of your hand that runs out at 30 - you then have to submit yourself to be obliterated on "The Carrousel" or you are considered a 'runner' and will be hunted down and killed. It never told you how society had ended up in that state - but I imagine it'll be attitudes like the ones expressed on the Today show | 2011-07-17 12:45:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
Wait. What. Did. I. Just. Watch. Oh yeah, I watched a whole bunch of lies, that's what. There's nothing wrong with playing video games at 30+ years old. Why?? You can STILL play video games and STILL have a life. Like me, perhaps. Gamers live in a basement, my ***. | 2011-07-17 14:13:00 Author: madmarsrocks Posts: 83 |
I will be the person sitting in my rocking chair with a controller in my hands. | 2011-07-19 15:47:00 Author: Godzilla Posts: 224 |
This is just them still stuck in their "Video Games are for Children" mentality; Which is why they are the first to start throwing a hissy fit when a computer game shows an ounce of Maturity. "What!!! You mean this game contains violence/bad language/adult situations?!?! WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" Idiots say idiotic things - there's really no surprises there. | 2011-07-19 16:02:00 Author: Macnme Posts: 1970 |
In that case lets make 40 too old for TV, and 50 too old for any fun at all. | 2011-07-19 16:55:00 Author: Captain_Dinosaur Posts: 214 |
