A Farewell to Bizarre Creations

Archive: 10 posts

This February, a comapny named Bizarre Creations closed it's doors for the last time.

A small team of only about 100 people was a British developer that produced the fantastic PGR series and Blur.

PGR was the reason I got an XBOX. When I saw GT it never really interested me, but sliding breakneck around a corner and getting points for showing off created a very complex style as Kudos was the currency of the game and was rewarded for catching air or drifting, and even sticking to the racing line meticulously.

I rented it after playing PGR2 for hundreds of hours and I saw how Bizarre relentlessly pushed barriers.

The sequel was much more simulative, looked amazing and the car physics had a huge overhaul. It's a terrible shame then that it was sold out by that time.

The sequel however, had features like a showroom that you walked around in an FPS format to test-drive cars and a garage where there was a little arcade game called geometry wars!

The flourish of cities was absolutely amazing! And not to mention the ridiculous turns! Hairpins, track splits, everything that made flat-out action was there! Full weather, snow, rain, overcast.

Then bizarre moved to the next generation of consoles, and boy did they improve!

The physics got an overhaul again and the cars either had amazing drift or unbelievable grip, every car was different!

Although they cut the weather out for the third edition, it was still brilliant and charging under arches 3-abrest was absolutely amazing.

As stated in the trailer all cars had at the very least a top speed of 170MPH!

Many believed this to be the worst in the series due to the lack of content, but it still had everything that made a PGR game great, and at 6 years old, I think the graphics are amazing!

And as seen in the video, PGR was the first series (Even from the first game onwards) to feature the Nordschleife, a feature both GT and Forza have copied.

The final XBOX exclusive game Bizarre made was PGR4.

Imo, the best racing game ever made, its rare that cars and bikes are mixed in together, I was skeptical at first, but while the cars absolutely own the bikes, the bikes are the best inclusion as they are the most fun in a racing game ever. The taunts were hilarious and the AI was the most amazing thing ever.

There was also full weather. Rain made a huge impact on the game as it resulted in puddles the vehicles aquaplaned over so you had to adjust your line or have a whole lot of bravery!

If you haven't played a PGR game go out, get and Xbox360 and buy one of these games, you won't regret it.

I've never had so much fun in a career....

...until blur reached the shelves last Summer.

Blur is very hard to describe, but one thing is certain: it is very cool. It kept PGR's physics, and real world cities but added power-ups and amazing online gameplay.

You should really go out and buy it now, at ?15 it's an absolute steal.

Sadly however, Blur was doomed to failure.

It was released in the same month as Split/Second and ModNation Racers, and while it was just as good it ha to share sales with those two brilliant games.

At this stage Bizarre had signed up under Activision. Would they like competition or anything but ridiculously high sales? No.

This doomed Bizarre Creations and they closed early this year.

Use this topic to talk about the games and the legacy, R.I.P. Bizarre.

Guess I won't be buying the next Xbox then with no PGR though lol.

PGR was good but dropped off after PGR2. And Forza is better...

Still, always sad to see devs closing.

PGR 3 dropped it, but I always found myself playing PGR4 over Forza2.

Blame the british government - they give no support to game developers what-so-ever.
Any british made film can apply for a subsidy from the arts council - and get tax breaks - as do many others in the entertainment medium.

Video games developers are left to fend for themselves - which is why so many british devs either end up going to the wall, or relocating to places like Canada, where they are more dev friendly.

We would be world leaders if the government gave more support - right now we are 'nearly' world leaders - and that's with no help at all.

It's a shame - another British Dev bites the dust.

I've heard the UK isn't very supportive of game industry. I saw a campaign they put up against gaming, with the excuse of fitness and health, when the organisation that made this, had Mars, Nestle Coca Cola were with them. And it's funny seeing as games outsold music and movies

PGR 3 dropped it, but I always found myself playing PGR4 over Forza2.

Meh, I didn't. It was difficult to find any solid consistency on PGR4, I'd run one fast lap and then one terrible lap for no real reason. I can run 20+ laps on Forza within a tenth of a second each other. I think the handling model is better, which gives better consistency.

But it's preference I guess...

Am I the only one that thinks Blur is the most underrated game ever? I mean come on, that was one of my favourite racing games of all time. It just saddens me to think that hardly anyone else experienced the epicness that was Blur. If you guys ever get the chance, play the multiplayer, i assure you, you won't be dissapointed.2011-07-14 06:12:00

It is the most underrate game ever.

It's ridiculous that a game like Yakuza3 can have a sequel and Blur can't.

There's even a wiki article on how poorly the UK games industry is supported (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_industry#UK_video_game_industry_practic es)2011-07-15 10:33:00

I loved Blur, and followed Bizarre since they were a part of Psygnosys.
That's very sad.
Blur was better than Split/Second and ModNation combined...too bad...
