Getting to know Dishonored (http://www.gameinformer.com/games/dishonored/b/xbox360/archive/2011/07/11/getting-to-know-dishonored.aspx)

Wrapping your brain around a new Halo or Mass Effect is easy enough. Understanding a new franchise like Dishonored is a little harder, and our cryptic cover probably didn?t help much. Read on to get a sense of what this stealth/action adventure from Arkane and Bethesda is about ? and to see the first screenshot of the game.

Who are you?

Players take on the role of Corvo, the Empress? legendary bodyguard. As the game starts, Corvo is falsely imprisoned for her murder. What the corrupt Lord Regent behind the coup didn?t realize is that Corvo is legendary for a reason. He?s not only a skilled combatant accomplished in the art of not being seen, but Corvo has a suite of supernatural powers that combine with his natural talents and unusual gadgets to make him one of the most lethal men in the known world.

Why should you care?

Even if you haven?t played them, you?ve undoubtedly heard of Thief and Deus Ex. One of the main minds behind those two games, Harvey Smith, is the co-creative director of Dishonored along with Raf Colantonio, the founder of developer Arkane Studios. The two share a vision of a game that gives players the power to be creative with their skills and tactics, and invites them to come up with interesting solutions to the obstacles in front of them. Arkane is known for its immersive first-person gaming (Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic), and the power of a talent-driven publisher in Bethesda (The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fallout 3) behind the team is promising.

How are they going to do that?

Dishonored has several major elements that combine to create its unique gameplay: mobility, powers & gadgets, environment, and AI. The trick is that a single power doesn?t just do damage or heal you. You can combine them organically to create interesting effects. Stop time and knock a bunch of stuff off a table in one direction then book it in another, so the guards search for you in the wrong place. Summon a swarm of rats to attack one guard, but possess one of the rats and escape in the chaos. Every problem has as many solutions as you want it to.

What?s the catch?

It's an assassination game that reacts to how violent you are. An unusual ?chaos? system tracks how much collateral damage you cause, and the game world changes as a result of your actions. Unlike a light/dark side meter, though, it's a behind-the-scenes element that affects story decisions without punishing the player or pushing them to play one way or another.

When can I learn more?

Soon! You can get ten pages worth of details in the print magazine, and we?ll be dropping new online content, from video interviews to an interactive map of Dishonored?s world, throughout the month. We asked a lot of questions, and Smith and Colantonio had a lot to say. For starters, on Wednesday we?ll share a video that breaks down why you should be interested in the team at Arkane even if you haven?t played any of their previous games.

Definitely a game I'm looking forward to! From the talented Arkane Studios (Arx Fatalis (http://uk.pc.ign.com/objects/016/016473.html), Dark Messiah Of Might And Magic (http://uk.pc.ign.com/objects/736/736193.html)), and edited by Bethesda Softworks.

It's a first-person sleath/action/adventure game GameInformer (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/07/07/august-cover-revealed-dishonored.aspx) released an article about it too.

Beat me to the punch!
I was just about to create a thread for this.

But, yes. I'm liking the sound of this game.
Arx Fatalis was a cracking RPG back in the day - though it never quite realised it's potential.

Sounds like a mix between Deus EX and Hitman - not a bad mix

I really hate the first person.

Third person is better because the character's limbs actually make sense.

Hi,

Here are two new screenshots from a French website's preview (http://www.jeuxvideo.com/articles/0001/00015362-dishonored-preview.htm) :

http://image.jeuxvideo.com/images/pc/d/i/dishonored-pc-1311583255-002.jpg

http://image.jeuxvideo.com/images/pc/d/i/dishonored-pc-1311583255-003.jpg

My summary of the preview :

* The game is being developed by the French studio Arkane + their American branch from Austin (that has just hired 5 people who worked on the first Deus Ex) + Viktor Antonov, creator of Half-Life 2's world.

* The story takes place in an industrial, imaginary, retro futuristic version of London, in which whale oil is a basic energy. Four islands surround the city : Serkonos, Tyvia, Morkey and Gristol.

* It is very reminiscent of the "police regime" in Eastern Europe in the 20th century and conjures up the Great Plague of London.

* The main character is called Corvo. He was already put in prison when the game begins because he is believed to have killed the Empress, whom he was supposed to look after. He manages to break out and is determined to find out the truth.

* The inventory, that shows up when the player presses a button, is wheel-shaped (probably like that of Mass Effect) and "overlays" the screen. The time doesn't stop when the inventory is displayed, but it slows down. It is split in 8 parts and enables the player to use plenty of weapons : sword, knife, crossbow, grenade, and some other gadgets, such as the Spring Razor: a weapon that the player can put on the ground and that spreads out very sharp metal wires when someone gets nearer.

* Corvo also has two kinds of supernatural powers, the Passive and the Active ones.

* You can get Passive powers by finding runes in the game, also called Bone Charms. They enable you to earn permanent skills such as higer jumps or being able to gain life every time you see a Fountain.

* Five Active powers has been revealed so far :

The Devouring Swarm makes rats appear, that then throw themselves at enemies
The Windblast enables you to shove the enemies out of the way with a powerful draught.
The Bend Time can stop time for a moment.
The Possession enables the player to control anyone (such as a guard) or anything (like a rat, that can get through a tiny hole.
The Blink enables you to teleport yourself to a place you've aimed at.

* You can mix your powers ("Play Your Way"). The example that was shown was called Time Travel Suicide. The character faces an enemy that draws a gun and fires at him. Just before the bullet gets at him, the player decides to stop time and gain possession of the enemy and stands in the path of his bullet. When time starts again, the guard gets shot by his own bullet.

* Your actions have consequences, so you must be careful and not shoot innocent people.

* The developers have focussed on the single-player mode. There will be no multi-player mode.

I don't think the view has hardly anything to do with it I personally am fed with First Person Shooters, but such games with a real background (like Bioshock, for instance) really appeal to me.

Oh wow, didn't realize one of the might and magic guys was working on this :O I really do hope they make the combat like it was in DMoM&M because it was just so great, fluid, and was really satisfying when you combined it with the ragdoll physics. (KICKING!!)

Also, these powers really sound like they will be a ton of fun. I mean, pausing time and controlling people? Ah ye.

Definitely A game I'm looking forward too... seems like the type of gameplay I'd enjoy.

Of course... this is going to be in development A while, and probably ported to the newer consoles >.>

Unless... do we have a guess-timate release date?

Edit - Spring? well, that's certainly interesting... this thing slipped through development quietly!

But Arkane's previous game, Dark Messiah, wasn't exactly very bug-free either.

I think it's an interesting concept. I'm a sucker for Thief and Bioshock so a game that combines elements of these two will get my close attention for sure. Trying not to get too hyped though, as it turn out a massive disappointment.

I really hope they don't dumb down the combat. I don't want the horrible combat skyrim had.

Aesthetics are looking really good though. So far so good.

I also hope the combat isn't like Skyrim's. Even though Skyrim's combat is very broad, there isn't much depth. The only thing that involves tactical combat are the few occasional enemy weaknesses and even that isn't very relevant. If you're melee-based you just mash the attack button until your character's arms fall off and if you're spell-based you just select the best spell you got and hold the attack button down. It lacks real depth and finesse like The Witcher's or Dark Souls' combat system.

I'm hoping it has open-ended gameplay like Deus Ex's, freedom like Elder Scrolls, gunplay and powers like Bioshock, assassinations like Assassin's Creed and challenge level like Thief.

They said that the combat is like a dumbed down Dark Messiah, which truthfully doesn't tell us anything. Hopefully it's more towards DM rather than stale combat, specially because DM had really fun combat.2012-04-27 23:41:00

"The new Bethesda title Dishonored made quite a splash with the debut trailer and now it seems as though retailers have leaked the date for the title. Both Future Shop and Best Buy Canada list the release date as Tuesday, September 25th on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. A September launch does seem a little early for the recently announced game, but seeing as the date is narrowed down to an actual Tuesday (and not a filler end of the month date), this could be legit. We?ll update you on any further news about the release date."

Plus some other screenshots I missed! I think the characters' faces look very expressive. By the way, did you know that several textures were hand-painted? You can see it on the wall on first picture.

Release date and boxart revealed! October, 9 in North America, and October, 12 in Europe.

http://image.jeuxvideo.com/images/jaquettes/00041409/jaquette-dishonored-playstation-3-ps3-cover-avant-g-1336660359.jpg

May 10, 2012 (Rockville, MD) – Bethesda Softworks?, a ZeniMax? Media company, today announced that Dishonored, the supernatural assassin action game under development at Arkane? Studios, will be available in North America on October 9, 2012 and throughout Europe on October 12, 2012. Developed under the direction of co-creative directors Raphael Colantonio and Harvey Smith, Dishonored is slated for release on the Xbox 360? video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation?3 computer entertainment system, and Games for Windows.

Dishonored is set in Dunwall, an industrial whaling city where steampunk- inspired technology and otherworldly forces coexist in the shadows. You are Corvo, the once-trusted bodyguard of the beloved Empress who has been murdered. Framed for the crime, you become an infamous assassin, known by the disturbing mask that has become your calling card. In a time of uncertainty, when the city is besieged by plague and ruled by a corrupt government armed with frightening technologies, dark forces bestow supernatural abilities upon you – but at what cost? The truth behind your betrayal is as murky as the waters surrounding the city, and the life you once had is gone forever.

Creatively eliminate your enemies with Dishonored’s flexible combat system as you combine supernatural abilities with weapons and gadgets at your disposal. Pursue your targets under the cover of darkness or boldly attack them head on with weapons drawn. The outcome of each mission plays out based on the choices you make.

“We are pleased that Dishonored has captured people’s attention,” said Vlatko Andonov, president of Bethesda Softworks. “We are looking forward to sharing lots more information about the game leading up to its launch in October, and having a hands-on build of Dishonored in our booth at E3!”

I think they chose a good cast for this game. John Slattery was just amazing in The Adjustment Bureau and Iron Man 2. Carrie Fisher was awesome as Princess Leia, and Lena Headley looks like an awesome villain for Dredd 3D. Hopefully they announce more people to be in this.

I'll probably play as someone who lacks any sort of subtlety and just blasts his way through anything and everything in his way. So yes, I'll be playing it the fun way. Gungho time nerds.

Kinky, but maybe having the game for lunch would prove to be a less emotional/awkward method of having it inside you.

This game's the first one this year that I'm loving as much as the best games of 2011. It's like Thief 2 would've been if it were an assassination game, with a few traces of Bioshock and Deus Ex here and there.

I'm pretty sure those lunatics at PETA are going to rally against Dishonored. You can kill rats and dogs, some books describe how whalers remove the blubber for whale oil while the whale's still alive, and there's a kennel where they train hounds (and put down the disobedient ones).
