My DAD needs your help! ( Need Grammar Buffs)

Archive: 16 posts

So my dad was given this "English Business" test for work that he must complete. He looked at it and does not know any of the answers and my whole family has tried. So I posted the questions on yahoo answers ( Will probably be unsuccessful). So then I thought how about asking the people on the site I trust the most :o.

So I know we have a few Grammar buffs on here that might be able to help. With your answers it would also be nice if you could say how sure you are of this answer. ( Percentage-wise).

Isn't this cheating? Okay, I'll have a go at answering it... but please note that I'm a teenager; so I my answers might not be 100% reliable, but then again, I am a bit of a Grammar Nazi.

After having a look: Okay, this is weird. A grammatical challenge which I feel I can't do. I might as well try...

After having a second look: Darn it, this is just... cruel. Seriously, if this is going to ruin an advantage for a pay rise then I might as well pass on this one. I've looked up all the terms on Google and understand them, but all the questions are just so twisted and blurred it doesn't seem applicable. Sorry.

Apart from question 4 and 6. I'm 99% sure that question 4 is D and question 6 is A. And I think (75% sure) that question 1 is also A.

I don't believe it is for a pay raise, it's more mandatory I believe.
But my Dad appreciates the attempt and the help on 4, and 6.

The answer to Question 6 is not A; there is a comma in place of a period after the first complete phrase. I would believe the answer to be C, since the list given follows the correct order and is correct from a grammatical standpoint.

Question 1 is a matter of the verb tense used. C and D are using present-tense verbs, as is B as stated in the first word "On". I believe the answer is A, since no active verbs were used.

Question 3 is also a matter of verb tense, but also what the sentence implies. Is he telling you the matter? Or is he trying to "sell" his point? This statement is requesting services from a first-person standpoint, so it must be active. I believe the answer is C, since the request given is telling the audience what they should do.

Question 5 is a bit tricky. Most parallel structures contain the words "to" and "and" as main conjunctions, while personal structure has personal words such as "I" or "me" contained. With that said, I believe that A would be the right answer, since D feels grammatically incorrect and the other two are just parallel structuring.

Again, these are just my personal guesses; I cannot indefinitely prove these choices correct nor do I have any idea what the others are. But I do wish your dad the best of luck.

I don't know if this has been answered because I don't have time to read the other posts, but for Question 6, I think B is the answer because the others all have obvious (IMO) punctuation errors. I didn't read B, so if you see any there it's probably A. (I just canceled out the ones that seemed wrong.)

EDIT: With a second glance, however, #6 could be A. The reason I didn't think it was A at first was because I thought you for sure needed a comma after "May 23". I'm not certain of whether or not this is necessary, but A is probably your best bet.

Oops. Just noticed that I said C instead of B. C is fragmented.

And A is a run-on sentence.

A. On May 23 we discovered a problem with the air distribution system, a contractor was called in immediately but not before Ms. Simpson and Ms. Walters were affected by the bad air.

That should be a period. And the a should be capitalized to make it grammatically correct.

You mean D right? since you said Telling and not selling since C is selling in passive voice

tl;dr: B, C, A, C, A, D

Question1: Which one of the following sentences is not written in the active voice?
A. The request for proposal (RFP) specified that the bidder's operating procedures must meet the ISO 9001 quality control standards and must be current.

B. On Receipt, the order must be checked carefully to ensure there is compatibility between the items on the purchase order.

C. To connect the incoming line to the remote control panel, first remove the cover plate and turn tap C fully clockwise

D. When the visitors arrive on Monday, please invite them to join the department managers for in conference room A

Choice A shows basic subject-verb-object agreement, and choices C and D are commands: although the actor isn't disclosed, it's implied to be you, the reader. That phrase in choice B marks the passive voice because the actor is not disclosed. If it were written in the active voice, it would say "check the order carefully" or "you check the order carefully".

Question 2. Which one of the following sentences has parallel construction and contains no low information content (LIC) expressions?

A. It is our opinion that it would be be advantageous if Fred Cantrell could fill the vacancy in the Marketing Department, and the position he vacates be taken over Laura Pearson.

B. In the past we have experienced a series of power outages but, with the installation of a new transformer, it is our expectation that power outages will be avoided in the future.

C. When we renovate the Fairfax Building, we will hire Morgan and Company to install a surge-protected electrical system and Water Works Inc. to upgrade the plumbing.

D. Our evaluation of aircraft noise levels shows that homes in the vicinity of airport runaway 28 West experience 8 decibels less noise than homes in the vicinity of Runaway 02 North.

Parallel structure in this case strings together two instances of object-infinitive -- object-infinitive. It shouldn't be confused with basic repetition of words such as with choices A and B. The other requirement of parallel structure is that both ideas are given equal emphasis (unlike D, for example, where choice #1 is superior to choice #2).

The conditions for lack of low information content (which I can only assume means vague or ambiguous writing) are also met.

Question 3: Is the following messege Tell or Sell, and is it written in the active or passive voice?

To bring us up-to-date with new technology, I request your approval to attend the federally sponsored Power System Operators course from March 2nd to 5th.

A. Tell in active voice

B. Sell in active Voice

C. Sell in passive voice

D. Tell in passive voice

I'm not familiar with the tell or sell concept, but the sentence is definitely written in active voice. If it were passive, you would see "your approval is requested". Tell or sell? I tried googling it without much luck. I'm a little bit torn. The subject is clearly some kind of course that's being marketed, but the whole package of this question looks neutrally informative, not like an advertisement. I have to settle on 'tell' because while the company is selling their program, the person writing the response isn't selling anything himself; he's telling the seller about his request to buy a course in their program.

Maybe I'm over-thinking it.

Question 4. Which one of the following statements is written best:

A. For your information, a copy of your March statement is enclosed herewith.

B. Your account has been examined with utmost care, and it is our considered opinion that, over the past eight months, it has been consistently and excessively overdrawn.

C. We have cancelled your account No. 218 764 323, as you have requested by telephone on October 21 and confirmed by e-mail on October 24.

D. In the matter of your request to extend the credit limit on your account No. 1125 2468 3007, it is our pleasure to inform you that the limit has been upgraded to $20,000

Dumb question with no given criteria, but that must be part of the challenge. Choice B does have the 'niceness' but choice C has the facts. So I'll go with choice C.

Question 5. Which one of the following sentences is both personal and parallel in construction?

A. Please send me your travel plans by October 8 and book your flights with Emerson Executive Travel Services by October 17.

B. The company has approved the proposal to allow employees to use company vehicles at weekends but the request that construction tools can be borrowed by employees was not approved.

C. Expense accounts are to be submitted to this offices within five working days following completion of travel and must be faxed to 204 488 7294 if the employee is traveling directly from one site to the next.

D. Modifications to the database are neither to be incorporated without my approval or are to take longer than overnight to implement.

Choice A is personal because it addresses the reader personally ('please send me&apos, and the parallel structure comes in the form of verb-direct object-prepositional phrase -- verb-direct object-prepositional phrase. Choices B and C aren't personal and they don't even have parallel structure either; they're definitely not answers.

But if there's a question I'm not sure about, it's this one. I can't completely disprove choice D. It seems personal enough ('without my approval&apos and there seems to be parallel structure in the form of two infinitives as predicate nominatives. My reasons for not choosing D are that the prepositional phrases describing said predicate nominatives are very dissimilar, and it's kind of a stretch to describe parallelism with less than either 3 similar structures or two very similar structures, such as with choice B in question #2. But it should be noted that here in Choice A, the parallelism is questionable because only the first object is also accompanied by an indirect object, 'me', which is why I feel queasy about choosing it as an answer.

I'm sure that sounded like gibberish to everyone.

Question 6. In which of the following examples are the punctuation and capital letters used correctly?

A. On May 23 we discovered a problem with the air distribution system, a contractor was called in immediately but not before Ms. Simpson and Ms. Walters were affected by the bad air.

B. It is our intention to:
1. Pay overtime for work done during the blizzard on Monday, February 17,
2. Reimburse employees who had to pay for a taxi to come to work on that day, and
3. Revise the work schedule to account for the 30$ production loss.

C. Five employees have been asked to work on Labor Day. Much to their annoyance.

D. We have determined that
? a major theft occurred on May 20,
?we don't have a full list of stolen items, and
?the insurance company has not yet been contacted.

Choice A is a run-on, that mid-sentence comma should be a semicolon to address two separate complete thoughts. (<-This sentence is a run-on too. Haha. I'm so funny.) In choice B the dollar sign comes after the number when it should always come before. (What a cheap shot!) Choice C has a fragment. (There's no verb in 'much to their annoyance'.) However, choice D is flawless.

Those are my answers and I'm very confident for most of them, but I'm not an English scholar, so if anyone wants to argue any of their opinions feel free. I only skimmed the answers above me.

Alright so apparently I forgot 3 questions, and it is vital since 4 questions wrong means my dad fails the , test XD, so if one question from what you all answered is wrong then it all goes to waste. So without further ado if you are still interested in helping you can. I?ll number these ones 1-3.

Question 1: In which sentence are the number and abbreviations represented correctly?

A. To reach the site by 6 am we had to drive at an average speed of 95 Km/hr for 320Km.
B. The distress radio frequency is 121.5KHZ.
C. Please supply thirty lengths of 12 ft. by 2 in x 2 in lumber.
D. 28 students completed the course, with 5 of them achieving a score of 85 % or better.
E. Pump 7 has been operating continuously for 478 hours and has pumped 3060 kL of water into the tank.
F. A 3.6 KM stretch of highway 270 needs to be resurfaced.

Question 2: Read the following paragraph,
Between March 10 and 24 we plan to move from our current offices in the Old Post Office Building to new offices in the 5th Avenue Tower. The two-week phase-in will mean you and your staff will have to anticipate communication difficulties between departments. Please e-mail me, by March 3, your plan for overcoming these difficulties

Your plan should cover

? When your staff will start to move,
? How long the move will take, and
? Who will maintain contact with customers during the move.

Based on the above information, which statement is correct?

A. The sentence parts are parallel but the three points are punctuated incorrectly.
B. The sentence parts are not parallel and the three points are punctuated incorrectly.
C. It is written in the active voice and the punctuation is correct.
D. It is written in the passive voice and the punctuation is correct.

Question 3: Is the following message Tell or Sell, and is it written in the active or passive voice?
In the interests of maintaining continuity within the department, it has been decided that Ms. Patel is to be upgraded from part-time to full-time employment and her salary reclassified to a level 3 category.

A. Tell in active voice.
B. Tell in passive voice
C. Sell in active voice
D. Sell in passive voice

Q1 from second set of questions is D I think.
The K in A, B & F should be lower case I believe
C just looks all sorts of confusing
E seems like it should be Pump number 7, rather than pump 7.
D seems right to me.

I may be wrong though!

Hmm...
Q1. I think it's E. In D, I think the percentage sign should be closer to the numbers. Option E is your best bet (As pumps are constantly referred to as just numbers - "Pump 7" I believe is more accurate than "Pump Number 7". If it was the latter, it would probably mean the number 7 should also be written out in words.)
Q2. I have no idea what they mean by the paragraphs being parallel, but they are most certainly not punctuated correctly (Unless you copied them out wrong?)
Q3: Again, I'm not sure about what Active or Passive Voices are, but I think this phrase is "Tell", as it is more informing as opposed to anything else.

I think that's right - but double check obv! Reckon you could put up the answers if you ever find them out for sure?
